Sayulita Verde, is a small group of volunteers who intend to plant trees and shrubs in selected public areas around Sayulita.
Sayulita Verde was established at the begining of this year, its small nursery is located on the out-skirts of Sayulita, where mostly native species from the Nayarit coastline are being cultivated.
Seeds were gathered locally and germinated last year in the San Pancho Nursery. In 2009 almost 400 of these seedlings were taken to a nursery site here in Sayulita . Now the trees and shrubs are more than 12 months old and these have been transplanted into larger plastic bags to augment growth.
Sayulita Verde´s goal is to plant 300 trees and shrubs during this coming rainy season. We also feel it is important to establish a program for the protection and care of the planted trees for the coming year, in order to ensure a high survival rate.
Sayulita Verde intends to establish an on-going nursery to propagate different species of trees, and focus particularly on native understory plants and shrubs. There will be a need for funding for this undertaking, to purchase materials associated with propagation and for labor expenses.
Sayulita Verde encourages the participation of schools, students and others, in educational projects and in public environmental awareness programs, and in this way our actions can serve as a focal point for the conservation of our forest and wildlife and the preservation of our ecology.
Some areas for planting that have been selected for 2009 are:
Along the river - from the main bridge in Av Revolución to the beach
· Various areas along the Punta Mita highway
· Public schools
· More areas to be identified
Sayulita Verde invites anyone who has interest in this Project to participate. The nursery is located 2 km from the Punta Mita highway on the old road to San Ignacio or Camino a la Estropajera, in the Rancho Santuario.
SAYULITA VERDE
A community initiative with an interest to green Sayulita *
Sayulita has been busy planting 300 trees (most of them native) in various public places in Sayulita such on the river banks, and along roads and highways. In addition many trees were freely distributed to local inhabitants who requested them, to plant on their lots or in their ranchos.
All of these efforts have been by volunteers ….. digging, preparing holes and planting, with careful preparation and sturdy protection used to ensure the highest survival. This has proved to be successful, with only a handful of losses.
A continuing program of maintenance and watering is being undertaken. Those involved are pleased with the outcome, and we are receiving lots of positive feedback from local people, and visitors to our town have endorsed and donated funds to our continuing work.
Early in January 2010 Sayulita Verde will be finishing the primary school project, planting 25 trees at the local primary school with the students and parents.
Future activities during the coming dry season will now include preparation for the next planting including, seed collection, making cuttings and propagating more and different varieties of trees, with a strong focus on native understory plants.
Sayulita Verde needs more regular volunteers for nursery work and watering … lots of interesting projects !
