Sayulita Verde,
Sayulita Verde was established at the beginning of 2009, its small nursery is located on the out-skirts of Sayulita, where mostly native species from the Nayarit coastline are being cultivated.
Seeds were gathered locally and germinated during 2008 in the San Pancho Nursery. In 2009 almost 400 of these seedlings were taken to a nursery site here in Sayulita . Now the trees and shrubs are more than 2 years old and most of these have been planted in various areas around Sayulita.
Sayulita Verde reached its goal to plant 300 trees and shrubs during the 2009 rainy season. We also established a program for the protection and care of the planted trees during the dry season of 2009 / 2010. Planted trees and shrubs have had a high survival rate, only loosing a handful to date.
Sayulita Verde is in the process of establishing an on-going nursery to propagate different species of trees, focusing this season on native understory plants and shrubs. There is a need for funding for this undertaking, to purchase materials associated with propagation and for labor expenses.
Sayulita Verde encourages the participation of schools, students and others, in educational projects and in public environmental awareness programs, and in this way our actions can serve as a focal point for the conservation of our forest and wildlife and the preservation of our unique ecology.
Some areas for planting that were selected for 2009 are:
- Along the river - from the main bridge on Av Revolución to the beach
- Various areas along the Punta Mita highway
- Public schools
- Various sections along the Revolucion Road close to the main crossing
Sayulita Verde invites anyone who has an interest in this Project to participate. The nursery is located 2 km from the Punta Mita highway on the old road to San Ignacio or Camino a la Estropajera, in the Rancho Santuario.

SAYULITA VERDE
A community initiative with an interest to green Sayulita *
Last summer, 2009, Sayulita Verde planted close to 300 trees (most of them native) in various public places in Sayulita such on the river banks, and along roads and highways. In addition many trees were freely distributed to local inhabitants who requested them, to plant on their lots or in their ranchos.
All of these efforts have been by volunteers ….. digging, preparing holes and planting, with careful preparation and sturdy protection used to ensure the highest survival. This has proved to be successful, with only a handful of losses.
A continuing program of maintenance and watering has been undertaken. Those involved are pleased with the outcome, and we have been receiving lots of positive feedback from local people, and visitors to our town have endorsed and donated funds to our continuing work.
During the present dry season, preparation for this summer's planting has included seed collection, making cuttings and propagating more and different varieties of trees, with a strong focus on native understory plants.
This summer our goal is to plant another 300 trees, many of them understory native shrubs and small trees, to accompany the larger trees we planted last summer. Again we are relying on a team of volunteers to accomplish our goal. We will organize ourselves, like last summer, at least once a week, to accomplish preparation and planting.
Now we need to form a team of dedicated volunteers to plant this summer's trees
We plan to start planting around the middle of July, after we have had several good rains.
