"Winter" is here! Everyone living here in Sayulita knows I am referring to the 10-hour torrential downpour of rain earlier in the week. This was not a refreshing summer splash mind you, but a cold rain that dropped the evening temperature by around 15 degrees F (9 Celsius). Our days continue to be absolutely perfect with beautiful sunshine and ocean temperatures are still great for swimming/surfing. Make sure to pack a sweatshirt and long pants for the evenings though.

On Wednesday, December 02, an entire block (Calle Miramar/Manuel Rodriguez) lost power to their homes at around 6AM. According to local MACRO business
owner Rubi Rosales, a dog chased a rooster up the tree next the MACRO office. Once in the tree, the rooster hopped onto the power lines and was able to pull together the neutral and ground wires causing a short that burnt through the neutral wire. No injuries (including the rooster) were reported and CFE restored power later that day. Ruby was able to take the pictures include in this article.

Early Tuesday morning another Sayulita ATM was broken into. The ATM machine located directly next to Mi Tiendita and belonging to the Bansi Corporation had been cut open, apparently with a high heat blow torch in the middle of the night. Seasonal resident Ed Rinas, a knowledgeable contractor from Edmonton, stated that with the right tools and knowledge someone could have performed the feat in less than 10 minutes.
When speaking with Cruz Rodriguez who owns My Little Market or Mi Tiendita, he explained he was surprised to see it happen again in Sayulita, but was not worried about personal safety. He arrived at approximately 6am and noticed the ATM immediately.
According to local Municipal Police who were not on duty at the time and declined to be named, the police are doing everything they can to find who is responsible for these crimes and encourage anyone who has knowledge of this to contact local authorities.

Temprano en la mañana del martes 1 de diciembre 2009 otro cajero automático fue saqueado. El cajero automático situado junto a Mi Tiendita y perteneciente a la Corporación Bansi había sido cortado, aparentemente con un golpe de calor de alta la antorcha en el centro de la noche. Residentes estacionales Ed Rinas, un contratista de Edmonton señaló que con las herramientas adecuadas y los conocimientos que alguien hubiera podido entrar y salir en menos de 10 minutos.

"Paco" Paco was living with a man at his house out in the country on the Punta Mita Highway. One day the man left his house and Paco behind and never came back. The dog was simply left to fend for itself.
Paco is 2-3 years old and a very beautiful animal. Judging from his build of a slim body and long legs, he might be a Sight Hound. Paco has a calm, friendly personality and besides the necessity for his daily walks, he doesn't need much attention. He is very peaceful and likes to have his naps indoors as well as outdoors. Paco is an easy-going type of dog and grateful that he gets food and water. He is in good health, neutered and had all his vaccines.
Paco vivia con un hombre en una casa en el campo en la carretera a Punta Mita. Un dia el hombre dejo su casa y Paco y nunca regreso. El perro fue abandonado para morir de hambre y si, estaba muriendo! Tiene 2-3 anos de edad y es un animal exceptionalmente bonito. Segun su constitucion, cuerpo delgado y piernas largas, puede ser de raza "sight hound". Tiene una personalidad tranquila y amable y aparte que necesita sus caminatas diario, no necesita mucha atencion. Le gusta su paz, sus siestas adentro tal como afuera. Paco es un perro ''facil'' para tener y agradece comida y agua limpia. Es de buen salud, esterilizado y tiene todo sus vacunas.

It's welcome news when local stories have happy endings. El Sayulero reported in October that a couple from California collected more than 20 boxes of much-needed math and science school supplies for children in Sayulita's schools. But they needed volunteers to help transport the boxes from California to Mexico. This week the couple, Debbi and Bill Hopman, reported that the response since the Sayulero article ran has been overwhelming.
"We ended up bringing 20 boxes to two families who were driving to Sayulita," explained Debbi. The Stewarts took many of the boxes - they live in Sayulita and have children attending school here. "They wanted to help out and when they read the article, responded immediately," said Debbi.
For Dave and Heather Stewart, the decision to help out was a no-brainer.
"We had been trying to think of a way that we could give back to the schools that our kids would be enrolled in (in Sayulita)," said Dave. "We borrowed a hitch-mounted basket for the back of our suburban and were able to bring about 15 tubs with us to Sayulita. We were thrilled to be a part of the effort."
The Stewarts added that Sayulita has wonderful public schools, and they are excited to help provide more teaching materials to students. The McGuires, who live near the Stewarts, also pitched in - taking five boxes in their motor home and driving them to Sayulita.
With five boxes left after this push, the Hopmans heard from the Waxmans, who live in Marin County, CA. They offered to fly down to Sayulita with two additional boxes of supplies. Carol Waxman explained her family was happy to help out, and relieved the boxes cleared customs without a problem, thanks to careful labeling and a detailed explanation provided to customs. She added she is looking forward to hearing how the children are using the supplies to learn and grow.
"The real story is how the supplies will be used by students in Sayulita," she said. The Hopmans are grateful for all the offers of help and support. "No matter who we spoke to via email or phone, everyone was so positive about our efforts," Debbi said, adding 25 boxes of supplies will be delivered altogether. There are just three boxes left at the Hopman's home. The couple will fly down with those early next year.
"We want to get to Sayulita and see the children using the supplies!" Debbi said.

Nature walks are a fun way to get out and enjoy Sayulita's beauty as a family. One of my favorites is the walk to Playa Patzcuarito - an easy trek through shady jungle roads and trails that takes you to a gorgeous stretch of secluded beachfront. Here's the route:
· Starting at the plaza, head south on Av. Revolucion towards Rollie's, continuing until you reach the Punta de Mita highway.
· Make a right onto the highway (walk against oncoming traffic, and be careful!).
· Walk on the highway for ~150 meters, taking the first turnoff to the right (look for the "Haramara" sign).
· Relax into your shady nature walk (staying aware of the occasional passing car).
· Continue on this road for about 15-20 minutes.
· Stop along the way to look at wildflowers, listen to critters rustling through the jungle, and spy on birds in the tree canopy.
· A little ways in, you'll pass a small gatehouse and 2 orange columns. Keep walking.
· About 5-7 minutes after the columns, you'll see the trailhead to the beach on the right, marked by 4 meter-high posts.
· The short trail winds through the jungle, opening up onto lovely Playa Patzcuarito.
Start out in the late afternoon to catch the sunset on the beach (pack a flashlight for the trip home!), or go earlier in the day with a picnic lunch and spend some time beachcombing, shell collecting, and picking up any trash that you find. The undertow and waves are fierce here, so swimming is not recommended - save the swim for Playa los Muertos or Sayulita's main beach, and enjoy the view instead.
My Fall Favorites this week are: rainy days and Mondays; jeans, hoodies, and hot tea; Maximo mastering the spoon.

Paseos por la naturaleza son una forma divertida para disfrutar la belleza de Sayulita como una familia. Uno de mis favoritos es el paseo a Playa Patzcuarito - una caminata fácil a través de la selva sombrío, que le lleva a una playa preciosa y aislada. Aquí está la ruta:
· A partir de la plaza, hacia el sur por la Av. Revolución hacia Rollie's, y sigue hasta la carretera de Punta de Mita.

· Acerca de 5-7 minutos después de las columnas, verá el comienzo del sendero a la playa en la mano derecha, marcada por 4 postes de un metro de altos.
· El sendero corto atraviesa por la selva, hasta encontra la hermosa Playa Patzcuarito.
Comience por la tarde para tomar la puesta del sol en la playa (traiga una lampara para el viaje devuelta!), o ir mas temprano en el día con un picnic y pasar un tiempo de caminar por la playa, recolección de conchas, y recoger cualquier basura que encontra. El coriente y las olas son muy fuertes aquí, así que la natación no es recomendable - major a nadar en Playa de los Muertos o la playa principal de Sayulita, y disfruta la vista de Playa Patzcuarito.
My favoritos de otoño esta semana son: un lunes lluvioso; días frescas con suéteres y té caliente; Máximo comiendo con su propio cuchara.

Warning: Sayulitis is is alive in Sayulita: a highly contagious airborne condition that targets the normally fit and active individual. Symptoms include nausea at the sight of a piece of gym equipment, muscle spasms at the thought of counting reps, and no desire to keep an elevated heart rate for more than what it takes to get up from the beach chair to go to the bathroom. We've witnessed even the most committed of athletes unable to resist the temptation to take it easy by this slow and unassuming tropical Sayulita condition.
So what to do? Have one gluttonous day after another? Give in to the growing number of reasons you keep coming up with for why you deserve to sit on your but all day? 7. Build a BIG Sandcastle: ask that cute guy or girl you've been staring at all day to join you
8. Rent a Kayak or Stand Up Paddleboard: explore hidden coves and beaches with the cutie you just built the sandcastle with
Too often we grow up, and then out, because we simply stopped playing. Reclaim your spirit and vitality by embracing one of Sayulitas' greatest treasures: a perfect playground.

Four steps to prevent a cold, flu & strep infection

This time of the year, when the weather changes from heat to cold, is exactly when the respiratory tract infections (RTI) develop more easily, so let's take a look at these four easy steps to avoid getting them.
1. Good hygiene: This is the best preventive measure. If there's a sick person in house, he/she and the people in the household should wash their hands frequently. In general, the more intimate physical contact you have (such as hugging, snuggling, or bed sharing) the greater the risk of spreading the RTI to other family members.
2. Take Vitamins: The best vitamin combination to prevent RTI's is the A, C & D on a frequent basis. Remember that these vitamins are already present in fruits, fish, and vegetables or you can buy them in the pill/liquid form at pharmacies.
3. Have your flu-shot: Seasonal Influenza has been the only viral respiratory infection preventable by vaccination for years, better known as Flu-shot, and that one you can get here in Sayulita. By the way, despite the A/H1N1 outbreak all over the world, here in Sayulita we haven't had a single reported case of that type of Influenza.
4. Wear warm clothing: Once in a while, like this week, we experience abrupt changes in the weather conditions here in Sayulita, which also contribute to the spreading of RTI's, so this advice really comes from my mom: "Wear your sweater, kiddo!"

Vivo en Sayulita con mi esposa, Megan y mis dos hijas de 4 y 5 años, Luna María y Elena Star. Megan es de British Columbia, Canadá, y ha estado viviendo en México por más de 15 años. Nos conocimos hace años en Puerto Vallarta.
Education level: I finished high school and later studied cinema, photography and acting.

Business history: I began working in the food industry at the age of 18 when I had a street stand in Guadalajara selling hamburgers, sandwiches, etc. After, in Guadalajara I also ran some stands selling tortas ahogadas, (literally "drowned sandwiches") which is a typical dish from GDL that involves a special bread, meat, shrimp or panela, and a tomato salsa that you "drown" the sandwich in. Later, I worked in various bars and restaurants in different places including London, Barcelona, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. I was also involved in working with a cold meats and cheeses distributor for the hotel industry, but later I returned to my true calling and opened my first restaurant in Vallarta called La Pitaya GRILL in 1998. After a couple of years I decided to come live in a quieter place, and here in Sayulita I rented a locale downtown. I called it Medusa and sold seafood cocktails, tostadas of ceviche, fish tacos and shrimp quesadillas. I was there for a couple of years but then the rent went up, and the place became too small for my expanding clientele. The low seasons back then were much slower than they are now, so I took advantage of the opportunity to move to the beautiful garden at Bungalows Junto al Río, my father's property, across from Sayulitas sports field. Although there wasn't much action on this side of the river, in 2005 I started to construct the restaurant and the office for reception of the bungalows in. Meanwhile, I bartended at some of Sayulitas finest restaurants. Now we have grown, we have an extensive menu, complete bar service at the restaurant and at the beach, where we also offer menu service.
Empecé a trabajar con negocios de comida a los 18 años que tenía un puesto en la calle de GDL de lonches, hamburguesas etc. Después, en GDL, también tuve puestos de tortas ahogadas por un par de años. He trabajado en bares y restaurantes en varios partes tal como Londres, Barcelona, Cancún y Puerto Vallarta. También estuve involucrado en una distribuidora de quesos y carnes frías a la industria hotelera. Pero después volví a mi verdadera vocación abriendo mi primer restaurant en Vallarta que se llamaba la Pitaya en 1998. Después de un par de años, decidí venir a vivir en un lugar más tranquilo, y aquí en Sayulita empecé por rentar un pequeño local en el centro llamado Medusa en donde vendía cocteles de mariscos, tostadas de ceviche, tacos de pescado y quesadillas de camarón. Estuve allí por dos años, pero después la renta subió, la clientela aumentó pero el lugar era muy pequeño y las temporadas bajas muy austeras. Así que, aproveché la oportunidad de poder mover el negocio al hermoso jardín de Bungalows Junto al Río, la propiedad de mi padre, frente el campo deportivo de Sayulita. Aunque no había mucho movimiento de este lado del río, empecé en 2005 a construir el restaurant y oficina de recepción para el hotel. Mientras, también trabajé de barman en algunos de los mejores restaurantes de Sayulita. Ahora hemos crecido, tenemos servicio completo de bar en el restaurant y en la playa, donde también servimos nuestro delicioso menú.
What is your favorite food in Sayulita?
Of course the coconut shrimp and shrimp tortas ahogadas, as well as other specialties of Medusa. But I also enjoy going out for traditional Mexican cuisine at Sayulita Café... Casa del Chile Relleno.
Por supuesto los camarones al coco o tortas ahogadas de camarón así como algunas de las especialidades de Medusa. Pero para salir a cenar me gusta la comida típica de la Casa del Chile Relleno.
What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? The beach lifestyle, the surf, the weather, and that it's an ideal place for my daughters to grow up.
El estilo de vida playero, el surf, el clima, que es un lugar ideal para que crezcan mis hijas.
What are some changes you would like to see in Sayulita? I would like the see the roadwork completed, as well as the town sewer system that is still lacking in some areas.

What would you tell the 1st time visitor to Sayulita? That they enjoy to the maximum this paradisaical and unique place and recommend it to others. And see you next time! ...because I know they will be back! I would also like to invite all the locals and tourists to our first party of the season this Saturday, December 5 starting at 8pm at Medusa garden; we will have live music, DJs, fire performance, video projections and more! Also to remind all locals that we offer them a locals 20 % discount on their meals at all times, and a free drink with the purchase of a torta ahogada. See you there! (closed Tuesdays)
