Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sayulita Sushi Delivery makes Sayulita locals and tourists happy with fresh, flavorful sushi. Halo Weiss, and her husband, Arturo De La Fuente, prepare the innovative food at Revolucion #4, across from the fire department. It is then available for pick up or delivered with speed to their customers. Halo and Arturo sit down with El Sayulero and tells us more about Sayulita Sushi Delivery.

What made you decide to offer sushi in Sayulita?

Five years ago, when we started Sayulita Sushi Delivery, there were no sushi restaurants in Sayulita. Fresh, high quality seafood is readily accessible here and we wanted to give people a new and healthy food option that was different. Arturo had worked preparing sushi in Guanajuato for over 10 years and it made sense to put those skills to use.

How did Sayulita Sushi Delivery first start?

We had been working in various restaurants and bars in town and we wanted to do something that was our own. We quit our jobs, invested our money in products, and started the sushi business out of our home. We originally only offered sushi two days a week and now we are open three days a week for delivery.

What types of fish do you use and where do you get it from?

Tuna and shrimp are the most popular and also the most readily available. We get these items from the La Cruz fish market and also from local Sayulita fishermen. We offer white fish when it is available, such as marinated mackerel and halibut, which we also get from La Cruz. We purchase salmon and eel from a store in Puerto Vallarta that imports it.

What is your most popular sushi roll and how would you describe it?

The California fried roll, often referred to as the “crunchy” roll, is one of the most popular rolls.  This deep fried roll consists of avocado, cucumber, carrot, cream cheese, your choice of seafood, and topped with spicy mayonnaise. It has a tempura batter and is breaded with panko. Another very popular roll has seaweed on the outside, the same vegetables as the California roll on the inside, and also your choice of salmon skin or deep fried prawn, as well as crab salad. The plantain roll is another favorite, with avocado, cucumber, carrot, cream cheese, and your choice of seafood on the inside, and plantain and eel sauce on the outside.

Do you offer any options other than sushi? If so, what are they?

Yes, we have several other options. We recently added egg rolls and spring rolls with veggies, deep fried prawns, and ginger peanut sauce to our menu. We also offer barbecue ribs with homemade bbq sauce using pineapple and citrus juices. We have fried rice, sunomono salad, miso soup, and deep fried plantain and cheese skewers (manchego) with panko. We also offer deep fried prawns, and breaded, deep fried salmon with cream cheese. Sashimi and nigiri is another nice choice.

Do you have any vegan options? What are they?

All of our rolls can be made vegan, as all orders are made on the spot. For instance, we can use tempura veggies on the inside of the roll, as well as lettuce and sprouts. We also offer spring rolls and fried rice.

Where can people find your menu?

Our menu is on SayulitaLife. Some of the Sayulita hotels and properties also carry our menus. However, most people know about us via word of mouth.

Do you deliver everywhere in Sayulita? What are your delivery hours?

Yes, we will deliver anywhere in Sayulita between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. However, if you know you’d like a delivery near 9:00 p.m., it’s best to order in advance. We’re happy to say that most all our deliveries are made by bicycle, in order to be eco-friendly.

You use biodegradable containers. Why did you decide to use these types of containers?

Styrofoam is harmful to the environment and we are more comfortable using products that break up. Biodegradable products are also very impotant to a lot of our clients and it would likely hurt our business if we didn’t use these types of containers.

You offer catering services. What type of services is it that you offer?

We offer catering any day of the week, though we ask for at least a day notice. However, the further we know in advance, the better. We can even provide sushi for large weddings. We also offer other types of catering, such as authentic Mexican food and Mediterranean cuisine. Halo grew up in Israel, which has had a lot of influence on her cooking.

You also offer cooking classes. What are these classes like?

We offer sushi classes that cover everything from how to rinse, cook, and prepare the rice, how to cut the veggies, how to pick the fish, properly handle it, filet it, how to roll the sushi, and how to cut  it. We don’t just teach how to make the simple rolls. We also teach people how to make the more complicated ones and consider what items are readily available for our clients back home, so that they can easily make the rolls again. We can also teach other styles of cooking, such as Mexican and Mediterranean.

Do you have plans for a restaurant?

We don’t right now. We are very busy with what we are doing and are really happy with how our business is going. But, who knows? Maybe one day.

Any final words or thoughts?

All of our rolls are made to order and can be customized. Nothing is made in advance and all of our ingredients are fresh from that day. We will continue to offer the freshest and most delicious food possible in Sayulita, will continue to offer new and exciting options, and will provide everyone with the best possible service. Thank you to all our customers for being so loyal and for loving our food. It makes us happy to make so many people happy through our food. We are very thankful for your business!
