Each month Sayulita Life gives back to our community by donating to a local cause or charity in need. This month, Sayulita Life has chosen The Agua Libre Foundation as our donation recipient. The Agua Libre Foundation has a noble primary goal - to provide residents, students, and visitors of Sayulita with free, filtered, drinking water as well as provide education about water and sustainability to foster a healthier community and planet.
The Agua Libre Foundation was founded by 14-year-old surfer, Enzo Ackermann - but don’t let his age distract you from all the progress he has made with this project. In 2019, Enzo attended the Ocean Heroes Conference in Vancouver, Canada, where he presented the Agua Libre project and connected with like-minded youth. While there he was inspired to take this project to the next level and expand his mission to install 10 water refill stations in Sayulita, 4 in schools, and 6 in the center of town; in addition, supporting beach, ocean, and reef clean-ups and banning plastic straws and reducing single-use plastics. Research and fundraising began soon after which led to the installment of the first water filter outside Costa Verde School a few months ago and a second filter installed right in the center of Sayulita located at the popular dessert cafe, Chocobanana.
With this donation along with other generous donors, Agua Libre plans to install three additional water refill stations in public schools in the area in the coming weeks - just in time for the new school year. In addition, the donations will go towards ordering 800 reusable water bottles for all school age kids in public schools (Primary, Kinder, and Secundaria) and filters for the water refill stations.
