In my last column, I promised you a most delicious, easy to prepare, and even easier to eat, pan-roasted Dorado in a butter-lemon sauce. Did you know that Dorado is also called Mahi Mahi? This is the Hawaiian name for the fish, and the Spanish name is Dorado. This is a true Dolphin fish; not the dolphin mammal. I didn’t know this, so I used to never eat Dorado, but now it is one of my favorite fish to cook here in Mexico! All of the ingredients for this recipe are available here in Sayulita, and fresh Dorado is especially easy to find in our coastal beach town of Sayulita, full of fresh seafood.

This month’s recipient of Sayulita Life’s $5,000 donation goes towards Sayulita’s Junior SUP, (stand up paddle) team. Since its founding, the Sayulita Junior SUP team has aimed to provide a safe and fun after school, extracurricular program for local youth to participate in, and to encourage our local youth to be involved in their community through a healthy, competitive, and encouraging atmosphere, which ultimately benefits their growth and development. Sayulita Life’s donation went toward the purchase of team uniforms and other gear to support the youth when traveling to races. I speak with team treasurer and parent Heather Vavra about Sayulita Life’s contribution, and more about the background and accomplishments of the Junior SUP team.

If you’re looking for a great new spot to hang out, people watch, or cool off from the heat with a delicious specialty-made cocktail here in Sayulita, then check out Sayulita’s newest bar, Wild Iris. Located just one block from the main beach, and one block from the plaza, Wild Iris is the perfect, cozy little surf bar to lounge, chill out, listen to music, and enjoy a quality beverage while you take in Sayulita’s sights and people. Its kid-friendly and dog-friendly atmosphere, along with its laid-back vibe, make it a wonderful meeting place for large groups and friends to gather. Owner Danielle Murphy tells me more about Wild Iris, which opened its doors just a few months ago, on November 23rd of 2019.

Sayulita is known for being a community full of artists and creativity everywhere you look. We see this all over our town, in our vibrancy, our decorations on the streets, the murals painted on walls, and even our stores. One of those in particular that stands out, is Areias Leather. Areias Leather in Sayulita makes specialty accessories and beautiful hand-crafted jewelry pieces out of high-end leather. Each piece is handmade, and therefore one-of-a-kind. The owners, Sandra and Amaranta, tell me more about their custom creations.

What to do on a pouring, rainy day here in Sayulita? It has been raining for hours now. The road in front of my house is a rushing river; our pool has overflowed, and I have decided to follow my passion. Guess what that is? You got it! Bake something that I have never made before to see if I would like to share it with you today. My eight year old granddaughter Lily is here, and she loves to bake with me, so into our Sayulita kitchen we went!

It is with heavy hearts here in Sayulita as we announce the passing of Rollie Dick, the owner of the famous Rollie’s Restaurant, on January 12th, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving wife Jeanne, his daughter Jodie, and son Josh, who were holding his hands, talking to him, and singing in his ear as he went on his way. There will be a celebration of life on February 16th, 2020, at the Western Stage at Hartnell College in Salinas, California. Rollie was a big hearted, big voiced man, who loved everyone. He greeted diners by saying, “welcome to my home”, and he never let anyone leave hungry, always offering an extra pancake (on the house!)
