Monkey Mountain

Trip Description: Monkey mountain is one of the most distinctive features of the surrounding landscape. The view to the south overlooks Punta de Mita and the Bay of Banners. The view to the north stretches past Sayulita as far as the eye can see.  The mountain is home to a variety of plant and wildlife as well as being considered a sacred area to the local indigenous populations that once lived here in the Bay of Banners.

Take a fun walk under the canopy of the forest up to the top of Cerro del Mono (Monkey Mountain). Your trained naturalist guides will help identify local flora and fauna as well as point out  ancient petroglyphs and educate you on the cultural history of this area. When you summit the mountain you will find yourself standing in front of a captivating 360° vista view of the Bay of Banderas.

Alta Vista

Trip Description: This hike is one for the books. More than two thousand years ago an Aztecan tribe, the Tecoxquines (Throat Cutters), chipped images into the volcanic rock along the river Las Piletas. The petroglyphs are believed to be symbolic of the concerns and the yearnings of the people, for health and fertility, the return of the rains, and successful crops. The rock carvings might have been meant as prayers or offerings to the gods responsible for these things.

We hike along the Piletas river under an immense canopy of tropical forest with hanging bromeliads and other tropical flowers. Butterflies will dance around your head as you observe the ancient petroglyphs. Your naturalist guide will teach you about the local flora and fauna as well as the indigenous & cultural history of the area. As you come to the end of the trail you will be amazed by the beauty and peacefulness of the sacred pools and array of petroglyphs surrounding you. Here you can take this time to contemplate, watch the butterflies or wander around.

Memorable jungle experience!
The Camino de Jaguar hike was one of the coolest things I've ever done in Mexico - also one of the hottest (phew!). I expected there to be some terrifying bugs and other critters, but it was peaceful and beautiful, and Stephen made us feel like we were in very capable hands. The man can wield a machete! Highly recommended!

Must do!
Steve led us on a fun and informative adventure to the pools and petroglyhs of Alta Vista. He is knowledgeable and great with kids. He is also an excellent and cautious driver. MexiTreks is a fantastic way to break up the beach time, get exercise and learn about the local culture and environment.

Beautiful hike, knowledgeable about local history, plant and wildlife, kid-friendly, superb customer service and prompt!
Mexitreks and owner, Steve, provide our family a fun-filled adventurous hike up Monkey Mountain. Steve, with his teaching background, instantly developed a great repaired with our 7 and 5 year old boys. He moved the group at a more than comfortable pace, engaged the boys in conversation about their surroundings, encouraged them to "lead" the hike when their energy began to drop... and even saved our youngest from falling into the jungle ;)!
As parents, it is so great to hear your children RAVE about a hike that took 3+ hours. Even better to hear them recall things they were taught along the way - about red ants and full moons, termites, wood that has turned to rock is called "petrified", deer "eyes" have magic powers, petroglyphs, fossils, Mexican west coast rattlesnakes with 11 rattles and that monkey mountain never had monkeys... and so much more!
This was our second adventure with Steve and I highly recommend any service that he provides. He is ALWAYS prompt in his response to questions/emails; always friendly and genuinely is interested in providing an outstanding experience for his clients! I LOVED that the hike was mostly a LOOP so minimal amount of time spent hiking the same terrain.
A HUGE thank YOU, Steve, for providing a priceless day full of adventures up Monkey Mountain with our boys! We look forward to another when we return to Sayulita! GRACIAS, Jenn, Dan, Kegan & Kellan Lockwood

More than just a hike.
The hike with Steve was one of the highlights of our trip to Sayulita. He was not only very knowledgeable about the wildlife and environment but also shared a lot of interesting insights about the town, culture, people and surrounding areas. It's obvious Steve cares deeply about giving back to the community. I'd highly recommend MexiTreks!

Next time Monkey Mountain!
Excellent guide, highly recommendable for moderate hikes. Being occasional hikers we gave “el Camino del Jaguar” a try and it was totally worth it. I put up some pictures on my blog for an impression:
