Mar and his wife Jody George first came to Sayulita in Nov. of 1995. Over the years, they have designed, built and sold 6 different homes, all in the Ninos Heroes neighborhood. Mar is an avid surfer and a prolific artist. His major work during his career was ceramic work. He not only did pottery but also had a successful run making custom tiles for use in homes. He studied ceramics, sculpture and painting.
I recently sat down with Mar. Here are some excerpts of what he spoke about: Marcus Lehrman, "Mar" who has studied ceramics, sculpture, and painting at several Oregon Universities earning a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) degree. A Life-long artist, he has taught art in public and private schools to both children and adults. He owned Arago Surf Gallery in Newport Oregon, featuring surfing and ocean art.
Locals may know him for the “cult classic” local art game, Loteria Sayulita, which consists of 54 original paintings depicting Sayulita beach culture. 600-700 of these games have been donated to fundraising events in Sayulita over the past 12 years.
Over the past two years, Mar has worked on 16 new paintings based on drawings he made of Sayulita from 2000-2002, depicting another reality, a nostalgic sense of "magical realism" from only a short while ago. These paintings provide a “time trip” into the not-too distant past and evoke a nostalgia for a “paradise lost”. The two paintings shown here have been donated to the Auction for the upcoming Pro Sayulita Gala Dinner on March 30th. These and another 14 paintings will be on display at Mars upcoming art show which will be held at his studio at 60 Primavera (across the
street from the AA house). The show will run for two afternoons on March 26 and 27 from 2-6PM each day. It is Mars hope that the paintings will be sold to locals and remain in Sayulita. The pricing will be affordable for everyone.
The graphite sketches will also be on offer. Mar has generously offered all the proceeds from the sale to be donated to Pro Sayulita to be dispersed to several programs of interest to him and Jody, notably Recycling and SayulitAnimals to name just two.
