This month Sayulita Life has decided to give back and donate to the Sayulita Church. Father Donato from our local church said they could use the donation money to buy a big loud-speaker, so that they could place it outside of the church for this year’s Dia de Los Muertos holiday, so that people can still hear mass while avoiding being crowded in the church or in an unsafe large gathering for mass on Monday, November 2nd, 2020. This month’s recipient of Sayulita Life’s $5,000 donation is Sayulita’s Campamento Tortuguero, or the turtle camp. Campamento Tortuguero in Sayulita is a voluntary community project, located on the north end of Sayulita’s beach across the street from the Pajaro de Fuego condominium complex. The goal of this Sayulita organization is to relocate sea turtle nests in order to keep them safe, as well as to educate locals and visitors on how to protect the turtles from poaching. For the last several years, the Sayulita turtle camp has been dedicated to preserving the native sea turtles that come every year in large numbers to Sayulita’s beaches to make their nests and lay their eggs. The donation from Sayulita Life will help the camp by purchasing materials that will improve the facilities of the turtle nests’ incubation laboratory. The donation will specifically buy wooden boards, shelves, electricity supplies, and thermometers.

This month’s recipient of Sayulita Life’s $5,000 donation is El Centro Creativo y Reciclaje. In the summer of 2018, El Centro started a project with the support of the Mar y Vida surf camp. With the support of local donations raised, they were able to make ashtrays for the community of Sayulita out of resourced aluminum and plexiglass glass, for a durable build to withstand the intense Sayulita sun, heat, and overall tropical weather. However, recently, due to normal wear and tear, and unfortunate vandalism, these ashtray receptacles have been ruined and therefore taken down. They are in need of repair and some extra love and care. Sayulita Life’s donation will help purchase new materials to repair the ashtrays. This donation, along with the sourcing of old materials, will repair the cigarette containers to be good as new! Risa Machuca tells us more about the ashtrays and when they were first created.

Sayulita Life’s recipient of our monthly donation for June was split between two groups: the Gavilanes Vigilantes and Luis Verdin’s Group, “La Huerta”. The Gavilanes Vigilantes have been volunteering to protect our pueblo during the outbreak of Covid-19 by guarding filters and security checkpoints to ensure our town remained safe & secure. Sayulita Life’s donation to this group, for the second month in a row, went toward purchasing food & supplies to help sustain the volunteers working long, tiring shifts, 24 hours a day. Luis Verdin is a Sayulita local who created the group “La Huerta”. His primary goal is to buy fresh fruit and vegetables at lower costs directly from the producers, in order to then create food baskets at reduced prices for those in economic need here in Sayulita. Sayulita Life’s donation went toward purchasing 25 bags of fruits and vegetables which helped 25 local families in need.
