Origenes Interior, nestled next to Naty’s Kitchen on Marlin Street, is Sayulita’s newest store from designer and owner David Luna and his business partner Pepe Kabande. Origenes Interior is David and Pepe’s third store they have opened here in Sayulita over the last four years; their first two stores proved to be very successful, but David and Pepe wanted to open Origenes Interior because it has its own unique concept which makes it stand apart from their previous stores.

Low season in Sayulita— often when we think of low season, we tend to think of the excruciating humidity, the rainy, sloppy streets that so quickly turn to muck, the businesses that close, the quiet streets, and the idea that this may be the time to get out of town. However, like me, many residents of Sayulita find excitement in the peacefulness that is low season. In fact, I personally think it is the best time of year to be here; with less tourists and calmer streets, low season allows you to experience a different Sayulita, maybe one you haven’t yet seen. Yes, it rains. Yes, some businesses do close. And yes, it is hot, at times unbearably so; in the summer in Sayulita, simply breathing equates non-stop sweating. Nonetheless, because of this, my personal mantra has always been that here in Sayulita, to sweat means to be alive—and how beautiful it is to have a daily reminder of the splendor of being alive in Sayulita.

Today I am interviewing Alejandra Aguirre, the biologist responsible for Sayulita’s Turtle Protection Camp. It’s early in the morning, and we are sitting at a table at the site listening to the crashing waves and watching early risers walk by. We won’t be releasing any turtles today, but will be talking about something equally important, the need to gather volunteers to protect the turtle eggs from poachers and predatory animals. As we sit and chat, a family of tourists stop by to inquire about turtle release. Their interest is great, but what Alejandra really needs are volunteers.

When you arrive at Xymena’z restaurant, you’re overcome with excitement, as if you’ve discovered a hidden gem or a beautiful secret that nobody else knows about. Xymena’z restaurant sits pool-side at the new El Pueblito Hotel, and it is simply breathtaking and delicious. Xymena’z at El Pueblito Hotel is fairly new to Sayulita; they first opened on November 11 th of 2017 and have been flourishing ever since. The view of the pool while dining, the specialty drink menu, the variety of food options, daily happy hour, and the fact that they are open every day for breakfast through dinner, all have made Xymena’z a great success. I go to Xymena’z on a Saturday afternoon, and I am surprised at how quiet and peaceful it is.

I have a goofy, sometimes anxious, easily-excited young dog named Kona. When it came time for me to choose where to take my pup for her first vet appointment here in Sayulita, I was a bit apprehensive. My girl tends to be a giant baby when it comes to going to the vet. As many pet owners can relate, my dog does all of the classic, nervous, “I know I’m at the vet” behaviors: the overly loud fake yawns, the whining, whimpering, and non-stop wiggling butt. Although sometimes comical, this situation is often just as stressful and uncomfortable for the pet owner as it is for the pet. However, when I got to Veterinarian of Sayulita, all of my fears (and Kona’s, too,) melted away. I chose Veterinarian of Sayulita due to the glowing recommendations I received about Noelia and Jose from numerous community members, and they all turned out to be true. It couldn’t have been more of a pleasant experience! My dog was happy and calm, and Noelia was gentle and caring while taking care of her. Veterinarian of Sayulita is now my go-to spot for all things for my pet.

The Sayulita Recycle Bin Pickup Program currently now has a total of 23 recycle bins located throughout town, including several on Niños Heroes Street, Gabriel Rodriguez (near the top of the road), and around the plaza/ near the main break beach. Before these recycle bins were put in place, a lot of people didn’t know how to separate glass from plastic, or they had no way of getting their recycling to the Recycle Center, because the new location is one mile outside of Sayulita’s centro. As a result, a lot of recyclable items (like glass or plastic) ended up in the trash, or even worse, on the streets and on our beaches. Now, each recycle station includes a plastic recycle bin and a glass recycle bin. In addition to building and placing the bins around town, the Sayulita Recycle Bin Pickup Program manages the pick-up of the recycling and the transferring of it to the new Recycle Center. This is truly an incredible and successful step forward for our little pueblo of Sayulita.

For a long time, tattoos have been negatively stigmatized in our society (and sometimes still are). “Only criminals get tattoos!” “Tattoos are for gang bangers!” You’ll never be able to get a professional job with all of those! I’ve heard these sentiments expressed often. However, in today’s modern culture, more so than ever, this negative stigma on tattoos is quickly dissolving. Chops, the owner and lead tattoo artist at Papillion Family Studios here in Sayulita is profoundly talented, professional, and deeply passionate for his craft. Chops is unmistakably and wonderfully, Chops—even his name is intriguing. What does “Chops” really mean? Is it a guise, or some kind of pen name? Is he a “one name only” artist, like Prince or Cher? Chops’s intrigue and signature style are not only in his name, but in his entire persona. Whether it be the black, short sleeve button-up he wears daily (only the top button buttoned, of course, revealing his fully tattooed stomach), his long, red, ZZ Top inspired beard, or his kind heart and tell-it-like-it-is personality, Sayulita knows Chops when we see him. I talk with Chops about his career in tattooing, his signature style, and about his tattoo shop, Papillion Family Studios.
