The news created understandable concern, as the readings initially surpassed the safety threshold of 200 NMP/100 ml (Infobae report).

But thanks to a swift local response and rapid environmental action, the situation has dramatically improved. On April 15, the municipal president of Bahía de Banderas, Héctor Santana, confirmed that Sayulita Beach is once again safe for swimming and enjoying (Tribune Travel article). Issues contributing to the temporary contamination—such as a hotel sewage spill and a detached discharge pipe from the wastewater treatment plant—were identified and addressed quickly and efficiently.

Adding an extra layer of community assurance, local nonprofit ProSayulita took matters into their own hands by launching independent water testing. Partnering with a government-accredited lab and engineers from Guadalajara, they tested water samples every four hours over a 24-hour period, then calculated a reliable geometric mean.
