This summer, the waves in Sayulita carry more than just surfers\u2014they carry purpose, passion, and a new generation of talent. On June 28 at 8am<\/strong>, the Verano Surf Kids Contest<\/strong> returns to Sayulita\u2019s north beach, offering young surfers the chance to compete, learn, and grow. We sat down with Juan, the longtime local photographer and surf mentor behind the event, to hear how he’s reviving a movement that first put Sayulita on the international surf map 20 years ago.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf0a Background & Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Q: Juan, can you share a bit about your background and what led you to launch the Verano Surf Kids Contest?<\/strong>
I came to Sayulita 20 years ago to do an article for a Latin American surf magazine I was working with. As a photographer, I saw incredible hidden talent in this small Mexican town and made it my mission to help get those kids on the map. Diego Cadena, Adrian Rodriguez, Johan Alcantar, Adan Hernandez\u2014these were just some of the names we helped promote into the spotlight. Now, I see the same talent rising again, and it\u2019s time to do it all over with a new generation.<\/p>\n

Q: What inspired you to model the event after the ISA Olympic format and include certified judges?<\/strong>
Surfing is now an Olympic sport, and the ISA governs the rules used at that level. Teaching our local kids to compete under these standards gives them a real shot at going global\u2014and maybe even Olympic\u2014someday.<\/p>\n

Q: Why include multiple youth age divisions (4\u20138, 9\u201312, and 12\u201314)?<\/strong>
Surfing starts early here. Our waves are perfect for kids to learn, and developing confidence in the ocean from a young age lays the foundation for future stars.<\/p>\n

Q: When and where is the event happening?<\/strong>
The contest takes place on Friday, June 28 on the north beach (left break) in Sayulita.<\/strong> It’s an all-day event open to the public\u2014come cheer on the kids and enjoy the community vibe!<\/p>\n

Q: How do local surf groups help support this contest?<\/strong>
Liga Peewee created many of today\u2019s top local surfers. Now, groups like Terminator Surf<\/strong>, Northside Surf Clinic<\/strong>, and Alto<\/strong> are working together again to build the future. These aren’t just clubs\u2014they\u2019re surf families with a shared mission.<\/p>\n

The next generation is coming in strong. Events like this are essential in preserving Sayulita\u2019s surf legacy while helping it evolve.<\/p>\n
