I’ve lived here my whole life. My family, well, my uncles, were some of the people who founded Sayulita. When I was 15 I moved to Puerto Vallarta to finish my studies, got two diplomas and my career started as an accountant. A couple years later I married and moved to Bucerias with my husband where I continued working as an accountant.

What do you miss most about the past in Sayulita?
Many things, Sayulita was very different when I was growing up. As kids we had so much freedom because it was such a safe town. The only things our parents had to worry about were us swimming too deep in the ocean (since my mom was not a great swimmer) and that we made it home at a decent time, but I always got home late! I loved going to the “pilitas” or the beach in front of Costeños, where I would play with my friends. I loved to swim. If it got late I would stay at Costeños with my cousin and my mom would come by to find me. The plaza was also our playground, as it was super tranquil and safe. We all would play there. Our kids can’t do that anymore since it’s not the same as it used to be, and not as safe. You’ll hardly ever see people from town there unless it’s a festive holiday or a local event.

What do you do for work?
I have a birria stand downtown, right by the bridge on the left hand side. I cook the birria all night and have it ready each morning for the best tacos in town!

What inspired you to start your own business?
In 2016 I finished a job and that was the year we opened the birria stand. My husband and I had a “pipa de agua” and it was a very competitive market, so we came to Sayulita during Semana Santa. My sister asked me to help her out at her own business, so me and my husband came to help. While I was here, my mother suggested I should start my own business as it would do well. My brother Cheyo lent us the space, and at first we opened a Carnitas stand while I continued working as an accountant. Once I finished that job, I opened my birria stand.

What do you like about how Sayulita has changed?
You can see a positive change in sales, Gracias a Dios. There is tourism that I like, some years ago we were getting some tourism that wasn’t so positive for the town. Now we have all kinds of people, and many are respectful of the town.

How do you think our visitors can support taking care of the town?
There are many ways to respect the town, being clean, buying locally, things like that. I think there are other things impacting Sayulita in a negative way, like the “game” tents in the plaza, the lack of traffic signs and lack of parking. All of these things give Sayulita a bad name, and attracts the kind of tourism that does not support the town. At the end of the day, the plaza belongs to the town and town people, and the people that are filling the plaza are creating traffic and a lot of chaos. We have a lot of party tourism which also creates a feeling of unsafety to our family life. We should be guiding our tourists, helping them park legally so they won’t get tickets and helping them enjoy our beautiful town.

On your days off, what do you like to do?
On my days off I like to walk towards Questos, the very end of the main beach towards the north. I also like to do the shopping for the birria stand, going to get a coffee…my husband and I like to take little trips to other towns as well, things like that.

Any special memories?
By the river everyone would tie their donkeys and horses and me and my little friends would go untie them! We would play in the plaza where everyone congregated. There was a Señora Tomasa who lived by EL Barbón and we would go steal her corn! We were very unruly kids and had so much fun!

Entrevista en Español:

Nombre completo: Patricia Rodriguez Ahumada

Me gustaba mucho nadar.

Full Name: Patricia Rodriguez Ahumada Age: 42 Where were you born and how long have you been in Sayulita?I was born in San Francisco, better known as San Pancho.
