Can you introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Jessica Zepeda. I am a psychologist and communicator, specializing in childhood psychology, with a diploma and master’s degree in Neurolinguistic Programming. I am originally from Mexico City.

How did you discover Sayulita?
I arrived in Sayulita 14 years ago, first to visit a friend who lived here, and then I decided to stay and open a bar in this picturesque place.

Tell us all about Casa Clu and how this amazing project started.
Founding a civil association for children was not actually part of my plan. What happened was that initially I did not have enough money to cover the rent for a business and a home in Sayulita. So, I decided to scout the area and that’s how I discovered San Ignacio, where I lived upon my arrival and for the first seven months. From the moment I arrived in this community, I realized it was very special. I noticed there were many children, and I had always had a good relationship with kids, so my first friends in the area were them.Initially, my friends were the neighborhood children, who came to play the drums at my house and play in the hammocks. Gradually, more boys and girls came around, and I began to notice their need for affection, listening, emotional support, play, and just being kids. So, we started playing games, having movie screenings, popcorn afternoons, and fun. Once I was able to move to Sayulita for work, I continued visiting my friends every Sunday without fail. Each Sunday, I brought art materials, we filmed movies, went to the creek to catch shrimp, played, and talked for hours until I realized we had grown too many and needed a club. That’s when we started renting a small space to store the materials, and thus the first “Casa Clu” was born (we actually called it Casa Club, but the kids called it “Clu”).

I always say that magic has been an important ingredient in our story. Now, 14 years later, we have our own land, which we were able to buy with the help of a couple of angels, our dear Bell (Tinkerbell) and Brian Hodges, as well as a half-hectare plot donated by a wonderful person named Eliot Daimond. We also appreciate the help of Nathalie Mignot, who initially helped us with the first three months of rent for the first space. Today, at Casa Clu, we can proudly say that two generations have grown and are growing with us. Over the past 14 uninterrupted years, we have provided a safe place for the children of this community. We are a playful learning and emotional support center where children participate in art workshops, sports, cooking, literacy and educational support, English classes, monthly outings and visits, apnea and swimming classes, games, group and individual therapy, a community and educational garden, and more.We are currently undergoing growth and remodeling processes to provide a better space for the kids.

How can we help?
We want to rebuild our kitchen, improve the play area, and we hope to construct a computer room for adolescents. There are many ways you can help us; we accept donations on our website www.casaclu.org. We need cash donations as this is the only way we can pay teachers and workshop leaders, as well as cover monthly expenses, outings, and the significant investment required for remodeling our spaces. You can also help by donating construction materials, games, toys, sports equipment, garden tools, or school supplies. Lastly, we always need hands to do what we do, so if you want to volunteer, you are welcome. We have volunteer opportunities on Wednesdays at 8 am in the Community Garden, or you can come to give a workshop, play with the children, or help us rebuild our facilities. We are open Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 7 pm if you want to visit us.

Anything else you would like to add?
Together, we achieve more, and with help, we will go further.
