Now in its 5th year, Azul Sayu’s Trashion Fashion event on May 14th will be better than ever! Created by Flora Amor as a creative way to bring the community together and raise awareness and funds for Sayulita’s recycling program, Trashion Fashion has grown into an inspirational community gathering. This year’s event is presented by MexHome and hosted by Villa Oso. Roughly twenty teams of designers and models will be walking the runway in reusable and sustainable clothing created from found objects and trash. This event is not to be missed!
Azul Sayu (AS) began our local recycling program six years ago, following the recommendations of a focus group organized by Groupo Pro Sayulita. Currently the program provides about 160 recycle bins in Sayulita and San Ignacio. The program partners with similar programs along the coast to reduce trash and to keep our jungles and oceans clean. AS operates 6 days a week and focuses on working with restaurants, bars, housing developments, and private homes to separate recyclable items from trash; approximately 50% of the waste produced by these types of businesses can be recycled! AS also provides educational programming for local schools, free drop off locations, and a new partnership with the World Wildlife Federation to support monthly beach clean ups! With two full-time workers, 2 very old vehicles, and a private storage and sorting space in Sayulita, AS depends on community donations to continue its operation.
