For tourists and locals alike, a trip from Sayulita to the Marieta Islands is a day well spent. This uninhabited and protected national park offers incredible marine life and gorgeous sightseeing, but is accessible only by boat. A trip aboard the Chica Locca is an immensely fun way to visit the islands. Now celebrating their fifth season, owner Gil Drory’s vision is to provide “the most fun and comfort as possible,” and a trip on his boat does not disappoint.

For starters, since 7-8 hours will be spent on a trip out and back, the Chica Locca is equipped with comfortable, brightly colored cushions and pillows aplenty, in addition to two hammocks, which, when out on the open sea, can also provide entertainment when they really get to swinging back and forth. As Gil strives to “improve things every year by learning from his customers," he substantially increased the number of pillows, and redid the cushions, making them larger. He also used a fast drying life jacket type fabric since they also double as flotation devices, which is just one of many unique features.

The second story deck offers additional space and another location for sunbathing, and serves as an amazing spot for whalewatching, while also providing increased shade for those below, which is an important feature for many.

The bathrooms, which now number four, are “normal” as opposed to the traditional “heads” available on most boats, again offering more space and greater comfort. Gil also equipped the rear of the boat with two fresh water self showers, a nice feature for rinsing off.

Up front, somewhat springy, non-slip netting has been expanded to accommodate up to 20 people, and offers a splash filled place to soak up the sun and view the wildlife, including year round dolphin sightings.

In terms of activities, the Chica Locca has plenty of options. Two large water tubes, each able to hold at least three people, which are pulled behind the boat, are a fun way to ride out or back. Of course, upon arrival to the Marieta Islands, guided snorkeling to the inner beach, which is only accessible by swimming, is available, as well as paddle boarding and kayaking. While anchored, passengers can also cool off via the two slides, which are located on each side of the boat. Plans for a dual slide, where two people can go together, featuring a lower drop into the water, is in the works.

If that weren’t enough, very soon the upper deck will be extended all the way to the back of the boat, and a diving board, for those brave enough to try it, will be added. A rack for additional paddle boards and kayaks will be added underneath. The open bus is another recent addition and offers guests an opportunity to see the canyon, trees, and jungle en route to La Cruz and back to Sayulita.

The energy and knowledge of the crew, who are all born and raised in the Nayarit and Jalisco area, also add a lot to the overall experience. Drinks flow freely from beginning to end, and the catered lunch and timely snacks were served with a smile by the friendly staff.

As Gil says, “There are only two rules...have fun and be safe, the rest is up to you."  When asked what he likes best about his job, he stated, “Meeting all the people, seeing how much fun they’re having, some having done something they’ve never done before, and the reaction to me and the crew." He makes it a point to go out on every trip, which average six per week during high season, and say’s “There is a repeat customer on 90% of every tour," which speaks volumes about the grand time had on the Chica Locca.
