My name is Bianca and I am a grade nine student at Costa Verde International School in Sayulita. Our school is an ecologically friendly school that provides environmental awareness education to the students and works with the community of Sayulita in ecological activities and awareness. Some examples of this are our organic school garden that we help look after, our practice of the 4 R’s (recycle, reduce, recover and reuse) and Kinder 3 students planting plants on the plaza and caring for them.

One of the school activities for this year is that each grade has committed to design and implement a project for Jane Goodall’s “Roots and Shoots” Foundation. Our class project is focused on reducing and recycling the amount of plastic garbage in our community.

For the last three weeks, the grade eight and nine classes have been collecting used plastic water bottles. We are constructing four recycling bins out of these bottles that will be placed in a few different locations around Sayulita.

We washed, dried, punctured holes and threaded wire through the bottles to hold them together. After that, we formed it into a cylinder and sealed it together. We are about halfway through the construction.

This project is a great way for us to learn how to work together and help to make Sayulita a more eco-friendly place. Our young generation needs to learn about how to make changes and help save the earth. Recycling containers are important so that plastic does not get thrown on the ground. Even better would be plastic reduction. There is so much plastic everywhere!
