It’s great to have a routine when it comes to health and fitness, but when you are on a trip to a place like Sayulita, it may be a challenge.  It’s easy to take in a few extra margaritas and churros, which can lead to returning home several kilos heavier.

The best way to conquer this is to get your exercise done in the morning.  Before you’ve had a chance to talk yourself out of it. Get out of bed and drink a warm glass of water with a lime squeezed into it. This aids digestion and cleanses the body. Warm water is best, as cold water is a bit of a shock to the system.

Next, take advantage of the great weather and get outside. Remember this is partly why you came to our little Pueblo Magico! Walk the beautiful beaches of Sayulita. Walking is exercise and is a bit of a challenge in the sand. A brisk pace will take you 30-40 minutes to walk to the rocks at the North end of the beach and back. Not to mention, what the benefits of being outdoors will do for your stress levels. Enjoy the beauty of nature. I often get distracted by the things going on: The dogs playing, children seeing the ocean for the first time, and discovering a few tiny crabs as I look for beach glass. It’s all good, but now back to business.

Use a pedometer device and track your steps. Many smart phones have an application for this. It’s easy to walk everywhere in Sayulita, so why not track your steps? Aim for 10,000 steps a day. This is a daily goal. Most people get way less than that in a day, averaging 1,000 to 3,000 steps for a sedentary person. So, just walking everywhere in town will likely increase your activity level.

Many people use their time at the beach to incorporate even a little more fitness into their lives. It’s quite common to see people stretching, doing Tai-Chi, yoga, pilates, push ups, and other exercises on the beach.  So, make your own personal goals and do them every day.  For example, at the end of your walk add twenty lunges on each side, three sets of fifteen push ups, and a full minute of plank, side planks (left and right) and then a forearm plank. Granted, I am a yogi, so I love a few yoga moves on the beach. Add a few down dogs and sun salutations and BAM, you are a yogi too! Take it easy when starting a new routine and be sure to listen to your body. One of my favorite quotes “If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won’t have to hear it scream”.

Your options are many when it comes to activities here in Sayulita. If you’d like a little more one on one help with your exercise, why not rent a surfboard and take a lesson from one of our local experts? It’s quite a workout in just one hour. There are also a lot of great yoga and fitness classes here in Sayulita. I hope you are able to incorporate a few suggestions in to your stay here. We are happy to have you!
