Many of us think we have a few pounds to lose. It may be a little harder on vacation for some people, but Sayulita has a great Friday Mercado del Pueblo and many wonderful stores, such as Terrenal Sayulita, which stocks a lot of healthy, organic goodies that could help you make good choices. Here are a few gems I’ve learned over the years as a former Weight Watchers Leader.

1. Get real. Don’t be obsessed with an unobtainable number on the scale. Work on a few pounds loss at a time and be happy about that loss. Then tackle the next few pounds. This is a fundamental understanding in weight loss. It’s easier to look at smaller numbers. This way you are less likely to be overwhelmed by the prospect of losing weight.

2. What motivates you? A fitness goal? We talked a few weeks ago about 10,000 steps. This is doable and fun in Sayulita, especially when you’re walking up and down the beach or exploring everything the town has to offer. Maybe it will turn into a 5k run someday. How much you move is entirely up to you.

3. Make a concession for that margarita or churro. Concessions meaning for that day only. Maybe walk a little more, take a fitness class (there are many great options in Sayulita), just move more to burn off those additional calories. Eat a salad from the Mercado del Pueblo for lunch and have grilled fish and veggies for dinner (Sayulita has many delicious options for restaurants with healthy choices), instead of three quesadillas and a coke for lunch. It’s all about choices.

4. Do not bring junk food into the house or hotel. Just don't do it. If it’s not there, you can’t eat it. Your kids will live. I can practically guarantee it.

5. Judge not. So what if you screwed up? Don’t throw in the towel. Just start over without adding another excessive caloric mess up and fall completely off the wagon. No one judges you like you do. Stop that and you will be a much happier (and maybe even thinner) person.

6. Drink. More. Water. Carry it with you at all times. This will help keep you hydrated.

7. When eating out, put half your meal in a carry out box, before you even start eating. Or split your meal with a friend or family member, which is likely easier than taking leftovers back to your hotel room in Sayulita.

These tips are simple, but very effective. Nothing listed is unobtainable, so give it a shot. What do you have to lose? Try to keep in mind that these things are lifestyle changes, hopefully permanent ones, and you can continue to maintain this lifestyle on vacation in Sayulita.
