It’s safe to say that it’s getting hotter in Sayulita. It does every year about this time, so it’s not a surprise. The surprise is how much the heat can affect us and our workout routine.  Don’t let a little (or sometimes, quite a bit) of heat derail your fitness quest.  Here are a few tips that may help you stay on track.

1.  Stay hydrated. We sweat more than we know in this hot and humid environment. So, drink more fluids than you think you need to. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. Add fresh coconut water, which is very easy to find in Sayulita, to your daily regimen. It’s so good for you!

2.  Get your workout done early!  Earlier is easier for most people, before the real “heat of the day” begins. It still remains cooler in the early morning in Sayulita, so take advantage of the quiet and fresh mornings, and go for a walk on the beach, jog in the jungle, or go to a yoga or fitness class.

3.  Keep a cold towel or washcloth with you. I like to get a few washcloths wet and put them in individual plastic bags and stick them in the refrigerator or freezer. They don't stay cold forever, but it’s nice to have one with me to cool me down if I get overheated. Use it on your head, neck, or armpits for extra strength cooling effects. You can always use them to wipe your face and arms, as this feels good to cool the skin.

4.  Take your pulse during a workout and make sure you are in your targeted heart rate zone. This varies with age and “zone” you are working on. You can raise your heart rate quicker in the heat, so start out a bit slower and give yourself plenty of cool down time at the end of your workout to adjust nicely back to your normal resting heart rate.

5.  Exercise often. Working out a few more times week in the morning could be the ticket to staying motivated and making gains in the heat. You may not enjoy your long work out, so make it shorter and do them more often.

6.  Change it up. Try swimming, surfing, or SUP in the ocean as exercise. It’s great cardio, you stay cooler in the water, and Sayulita is known for its water sports.
