There’s a new business in town, The Joy of Floating, and only just recently had float tanks and the concept of “floating” hit my radar. Excited for this novel experience, I booked my appointment and discovered that cold laser facials are another service offered. Score!

I turned the shower off, all squeaky clean, and tentatively stuck a foot in the float tank, virtually a large circular pod.

The water, saturated with 1,200 pounds of magnesium sulfate, only about a foot deep, felt warm and inviting, the temperature is set the same as your skin, 93.5° F.

A soft light radiated from inside the tank and relaxing music played at a soft volume. I pulled the lid of the pod down, and was pleasantly surprised at how high the top of the pod is, which makes the space feel roomy and not in the least bit claustrophobic.

Used to nearly constant stimulation, whether it be scrolling through FaceBook every time I have a free second or filling my time with other business, I initially felt restless when the music shut off after five minutes. Given the option to leave the light on or shut it off, I had opted for darkness. I pushed my leg down to the bottom of the tank and up it immediately popped. I moved my arms from my side to above my head and back down again, loving the extreme buoyancy. I felt my stomach, slippery from the solution, and wondered if this might feel womb like. And then, all of a sudden, after my body jolted, I realized I had become so deeply relaxed that I had fallen asleep.

The music started to softly play again, indicating I only had 5 minutes left of my one-hour float. I felt relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the rest of the day, especially since I had just received the equivalent of 4 hours of sleep in only 1 hour. This is just one of the many benefits of floating. Others include relieving pain, improving athletic performance, increasing creativity, and decreasing depression and anxiety.

I had also scheduled a cold laser facial appointment at The Joy of Floating to follow my “float”. Having seen “before” and “after” photos of someone else’s results, I was sold, and signed up for the 10 treatment series (2 treatments / week for 5 weeks) to help reduce the fine lines and age spots on my face. At the last minute, I also decided to have the sun spots on my hands treated.

The cold laser, which isn’t cold to the touch at all, is a hand-held device, utilizes three light frequencies, red, infra-red, and violet, that pass through the dermis, epidermis, and subcutaneous layers of the skin.

The absorption of the light stimulates the cells, returning them to neutral and erasing cell memory. Cold laser facials stimulate the skin to produce collagen and is also great for healing and diminishing scars, acne, and wrinkles.

During the approximate half hour treatment, there was no pain involved whatsoever. In fact, I felt extremely relaxed as Veronica, the owner of The Joy of Floating, held the cold laser device to my face. Had I not just fallen asleep during my “float”, I could have easily fallen asleep during this treatment.

There are also other uses for the cold laser in addition to facials. For example, it can be used to help treat injuries and reduce pain and inflammation. It’s very exciting to have this rather new, and effective, technology right here in Sayulita.

If you’d like to experience “floating” or a cold laser treatment for yourself, make sure to contact Veronica at The Joy of Floating.
