El Sayulero this week explores Health Care Resources of Puerto Vallarta, interviews the young and enterprising Daniel Camacho Venegas, and recaps the recent Mexico vs. America showdown in the World Cup qualifying games.

Its been a while since you have heard from me directly, but be assured that I am here every week putting El Sayulero together for your Friday reading pleasure. I came across a few Internet articles this week that I am sure many of you will interpret as great news for home and business owners here in the village.
 The first is an article from Yahoo News listing the Top 10 beach holiday family locations in the world according to Lonely Planet's new Family Vacation Guidebook.. Guess what? Sayulita Mexico is number nine (#9) on the list, with references to kids and ice cream in the town square.

 Secondly, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) just announced a strong long-term outlook for tourism in Mexico. The remainder of 2009 may be a little tough, but a 5% per year growth in tourism is expected over the next 10 years.

 And last (but certainly not least) is an online sale by Alaska Airlines offering great deals on flights from the NW to Puerto Vallarta. Tickets are as cheap as $139 one-way, and travel must take place from September 14, 2009 - December 16, 2009.

Una nota de Ian Hace tiempo que no han escuchado directamente de mí, pero tengan por seguro que cada semana estoy aqui Armando El Sayulero para su placer cada viernes como lectores. Esta semana me tope con varios articulos interesantes en el internet, que me imagino muchos de ustedes interpretarán como buenas noticias para los dueños de casa y negocios aqui en el pueblo.
El primer articulo es de Yahoo Noticias nombrando los mejores 10 lugares de playa en el mundo para vacacion familiar. Adivinen que? Sayulita, Mexico es numero nueve (#9) en la lista, con referencias a los niños y nieves en la plaza central.

Segundo, el Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo (WTTC) acaba de anunciar un pronostico muy favorable para el turismo en Mexico a largo plazo. Lo que queda de 2009 quizás será un poco dificil, pero un crecimiento del 5% en turismo es esperado en los proximos 10 años.

Y por ultimo (pero no menos importante) hay muy buenas promociones en línea con Alaska Airlines que ofrecen muy buenos precios en vuelos del noroeste de Estados Unidos a Puerto Vallarta.  Vacations are fun: in theory. But what if you need a doctor while in Mexico but you don't speak Spanish? How do you know where to find specific services and what is and isn't covered by your health insurance?
Pamela Thompson has the answers to these and other important health-related questions. Thompson co-founded HealthCare Resources Puerto Vallarta, a licensed, registered business offering health resources for residents of Bahia de Banderas, including physician referrals, Mexican and International insurance, and claim submissions. She also arranges translation services and sends reports and health information to patients' physicians in Canada and the US.
In addition, her group handles surgical packages, or "medical tourism" packages including bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery and others.
She works closely with the American Consulate, and provides patient advocacy, discounted lab work, diagnostic studies, and assistance in hospitals (Medasist). Since she founded the business two years ago, it has expanded immensely. Thompson is now in contact with 300 to 500 patients per month during the high season.
 "I never dreamed it would grow to the level and capacity that it is at right now," says Pamela. Thompson is passionate about her work. She hails from California, but has lived in Puerto Vallarta full-time for 20 years. "I come from a large family of nurses," she said, adding that she started off here in tourism, but returned to her true calling: health care.
Thompson says that the main problem patients have while navigating the Mexican health care system is the language barrier. Also, many visitors don't know Medicare in not accepted here. Having insurance is vital, as is finding the right doctor. Her group is contracted with 26 physicians. All are board certified, professional, and many are bi-lingual. Each physician benefits from referrals via publicity, insurance billing, and assistance with their English-speaking patients. However, Thompson stresses that she does not receive a referral commission for her services.
 Her work also includes providing specialized clinics on topics like mammograms, women's and men's health, vaccines, and skin care. "We have a speakers' program that will expand substantially this high season," added Thompson. Each month a new topic, like ovarian cancer for example, will be explored.
Thompson wants to visit Sayulita regularly this fall, and she's had multiple requests to spend more time here. "I would like to do some information sessions on insurance, possible health clinics, [and] various types of speakers programs here," she says. "I would like to go once a month to the northern area, rotating what town we would be in."
This October she is launching a HealthCare Resources Membership program which will provide a wide array of services and discounts.

Las vacaciones son divertidas: en teoria. Pero que tal si uno necesita un medico mientras está en Mexico, pero no sabe hablar español? Como se sabe uno encontrar servicios especificos y lo que si o no está cubierto por su seguro medico?
Pamela Thompson tiene las respuestas a estas y otras preguntas importantes relacionadas con la salud. Thompson fue una de las fundadoras de HealthCare Resources Puerto Vallarta, un negocio licenciado y registrado que ofrece recursos de salud para los residentes de Bahia de Banderas, incluso recomendaciones de medicos, seguro en Mexico e internacionalmente, y submisiones de reportes. Ella tambien arregla servicios de traduccion and manda reportes e informacion de salud de los pacientes a sus medicos en Canada o Estados Unidos. Ademas, su grupo maneja los paketes de sirugia, o promociones del "turismo medico" como de cirugia plastica o cosmetica.
Ella trabaja mucho junto con el Consulado estadounidense, y provee ayuda para pacientes, trabajo de laboratorio de descuento, estudios diagnosticos, y asistencia en hospitals (Medasist). Desde que fundó su negocio hace dos años, ha crecido muchisimo. Thompson está en contacto con entre 300 a 500 pacientes por mes durante la temporada alta.
"Nunca pensé que crezcara al nivel y capacidad a que está ahorita," dice Pamela. Thompson es apasionada por su trabajo. Viene de California, pero ha vivido en Puerto Vallarta por 20 años. "Vengo de una familia grande de enfermeras," dijo ella, agregando que empezó en el campo del turismo, pero regresó a su verdadera passion: provision de salud.
Thompson dice que el mayor problema que tienen los pacientes mientras navigando el sistema de salud mexicano es el idioma. Tambien, muchos turistas no saben que no se acepta Medicare aqui. Tener seguro es vital, asi como tambien encontrar el correcto medico. Su grupo es contratado con 26 medicos. Todos son certificados, professionals, y muchos son bilingües. Cada de los medicos se beneficia de los referidos a traves de la publicidad, coleccionar de los seguros, y asistencia con los pacientes que hablan ingles. Sin embargo, Thompson emfatiza que ella no recibe ningun comision por los referidos y sus otros servicios.
Su trabajo tambien incluye proveer clinicas especializadas sobre topicos como mamografos, salud feminina y masculina, las vacunas, y cuidado de piel. "Tenemos programos de discursos que se expandirán mucho esta temporada alta," agregó Thompson. Cada mes un nuevo tema, como el cancer de ovario por ejemplo, será explorado.
Thompson quiere visitar Sayulita regularmente este otoño, y ha recibido muchas solicitudes de pasar más tiempo aqui. "Me gustaria hacer unas sesiones de informes sobre seguro medico, posiblement clinicas de salud, y varias charlas sobre temas de salud," dice ella. "Me gustaria ir una vez al mes a la zona norte, alternando en que pueblo estariamos."
Este octubre lanzará un programa de membresia de HealthCare Resources que proveerá una selección vasta de servicios y discuentos.

| | Sayulita Celebrates as Mexico wins World Cup playoffs against USA
After the embarrassing 5-0 defeat at the hands (or feet) of Mexico two weeks ago, the U.S. soccer team had revenge on it's mind coming into last Wednesday's World Cup qualifying game at the 105,000-seat, sold out, Azteca stadium in Mexico City. For Mexico, a loss would have meant ending possibilities of attending the World Cup in South Africa next year.
Sayulita is home to a perfect mix of Americans and Mexicans and made for an exciting setting on an otherwise typical "off season" afternoon. Don Pedro's was the premiere sports bar location for watching the action, but all across Sayulita the game could be heard on televisions in small stores and homes.
 Saralay Palomera, a local fish-monger's assistant, was glued to the TV hoping for a Mexican victory. Don Pedro's bartender Bernie Partida said that it was very unusual to see a full capacity crowd, not at Azteca Stadium, but at the Sayulita restaurant, with everyone having a great time. This included many visitors from abroad including Chris Fath of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (pictured).
After Mexico scored the winning goal in the second half, the United States left the field shaking their heads at the 2-1 loss. There are still more qualifying games to come in the Concacaf division that includes Central American countries, the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Even after losing this crucial game, the United States (with ten total points) still holds on to second place, though tied with Honduras. Costa Rica currently leads the group with twelve points. Even after an important victory for Mexico, with six points, the national team will still have to struggle to make it to one of the qualifying top three positions that will go to the World Cup.
Mexico VS Estados Unidos en Sayulita
 Despues de la derrota embarazosa del marcador 5-0 a manos (o pies) de Mexico hace dos semanas, el equipo de futbol estadounidense tenia la venganza en su mente llegando al partido calificatorio para la copa mundial en el lleno Estadio Azteca de 105,000 asientos en Ciudad de Mexico. Para Mexico, una derrota habría significado terminar las posibilidades de asistir a la copa mundial en Sudafrica el proximo año.
Sayulita siendo la mezcla perfecta de estadounidenses y mexicanos se prestó para un escenario emocionante, en una tarde por lo demas tipica de la temporada baja. Don Pedro's fue el lugar principal tipo "sportsbar" para ver la acción, pero por todo Sayulita, se podía escuchar el juego en tiendas pequeñas y salas de casa.

2. Birthdate/ Age: April 29, 1995 and I am 14 years old.

3. Born in Sayulita? Yes, I was actually born in the hospital in San Pancho.

4. Family History and Information? My mother Emma Marina Venegas Trujillo is part of the Rodriguez family which is one of the largest families in Sayulita. She was actually born in Sayulita and delivered by a midwife in a home here. My father is Fidel Camacho Venegas and my grandfather Don Victor Camacho Solis was one of the founding members of Sayulita. I am the older of two children and have a younger brother Fernando, who is nine years old and attends the public Elementary school in Sayulita. I would estimate that I am related to about 30% of the current full-time Mexican residents of Sayulita.
4. ¿Historia de la familia? Mi mamá Emma Marina Venegas Trujillo es parte de la familia Rodríguez, que es una de las familias más grandes de Sayulita. Ella nació en Sayulita, en una casa, con una partera. Mi papá es Fidel Camacho Venegas y mi abuelo Don Víctor Camacho Solís fue uno de los fundadores de Sayulita. Soy el mas grande de dos hijos y tengo un hermano menor, Fernando que tiene 9 años de edad y estudia en la Primaria en Sayulita. Yo considero que estoy relacionado familiarmente con el 30% de la población mexicana de Sayulita.
 5. Education Level and Future Academic Goals? I started at the local Kindergarten here in Sayulita, then advanced to the public Elementary school and am now going into my final year at the public Junior High School. After graduating, I plan on attending the public High School in La Cruz. I then want to go on to study at a University. At this point my top three are Monterey Tech, UNAM in Mexico City, or the University of Guadalajara. My current area of interest is in the medical field specializing as a surgeon. My plan is to study 3 years of medicine at the university level and then another 3 years studying to become a surgeon at the same university.
5. ¿Nivel de Educación? Empecé en el Kínder de aquí de Sayulita, después fui a la Primaria pública del pueblo y ahora estoy por concluir la Secundaria. Después de graduarme, planeo estudiar en la Preparatoria de La Cruz. Luego de eso, quiero estudiar en la universidad. En este momento mis tres opciones son el Tec de Monterrey, UNAM en la Ciudad de México, y la Universidad de Guadalajara. Actualmente, mi interés está en el campo de la medicina, especialmente la cirugía. Mi plan es estudiar tres años de medicina y después otros tres años de estudio para convertirme en cirujano en la misma universidad.
6. Business Goals? I would like to start as an intern at a public hospital where eventually I can begin to practice as a surgeon and eventually earn enough money to open a hospital here in Sayulita. It seems strange to me that Sayulita, with all its amenities, still only has clinics. I became interested in becoming a surgeon after witnessing my grandparents go through different surgical procedures. I want to give the villagers and the people of Sayulita an actual full service hospital they can go to, that way I can give back to the community that has given so much to me.
6. ¿Cual es tu meta en los negocios? Me gustaría empezar como interno en hospital publico, donde pueda practicar la cirugía, además de hacer suficiente dinero para abrir un hospital aquí en Sayulita. Me parece extraño que Sayulita, con todas las comodidades que tiene, todavía no cuente con hospitales. Me empecé a interesar en la cirugía después de que mis abuelos pasaron por diferentes operaciones. Quiero darle a la gente del pueblo de Sayulita, un lugar con servicio completo de hospital a donde ellos puedan ir y de esa manera yo puedo regresarles todas las cosas que me han dado.
 7. What are your favorite things to do in Sayulita? I really enjoy being together with my family on the beach enjoying each other's company, the warm sand, and the surf. I also like just kicking back in the plaza and hanging out with my friends.
7. ¿Cuál es la cosa que mas te gusta hacer aquí en Sayulita? Yo realmente disfruto estar con mi familia en la playa, disfrutando de nuestra compañía, de la arena tibia y del surf. También me gusta estar en la plaza con mis amigos.
8. What is your favorite meal? I love the BBQ ribs at Calypso's restaurant across from the plaza. Just the thought makes my mouth water! My dad Fidel, who spent five years as a butcher, also makes tremendous Carnitas, Buches which are similar to Carnitas, and Chicharon from pork and lamb ribs which practically melt in your mouth. He is teaching me how to prepare a variety of meals.
8. ¿Cual es tu comida favorita? Me encantan las costillas asadas en el restaurante Calypso, enfrente de la plaza. ¡Solo de pensar en ellas se me hace agua la boca! Mi papá Fidel, que pasó cinco años como carnicero también hace tremendas carnitas y buches, que son parecidos a las carnitas y chicharrones de puerco y costillas de cordero, que prácticamente se deshacen en tu boca. El me esta enseñando a preparar diferentes comidas.
9. What educational changes do feel are necessary in Sayulita? At the public Elementary School, I feel they need to re-surface the soccer field. Right now it is just a bunch of rocks and uneven dirt where kids can get hurt. I also feel that the Elementary school could use a computer lab similar to the one that was just placed in my school. The small block which leads from the Punta De Mita Hwy and up to the main gate of the public Junior High is in desperate need of repair. I have personally seen many people hurt themselves simply walking along it. Another thing I would like to see at my school is the use of the Science Lab which just sits dormant and I don't know why.
9. ¿Qué cambies en la educación crees tu que son necesarios en Sayulita? En la primaria creo que es necesario renovar el campo de fut bol. Ahorita es nada más que un montón de piedras y lodo donde los niños pueden lastimarse. También creo que la primaria podría utilizar un laboratorio igual al que tenemos en la secundaria. La cuadrita que va del libramiento a Punta de Mita a la puerta principal de la secundaria necesita reparación desesperadamente. Yo personalmente he visto a mucha gente lastimarse con solo caminar por allí. Otra cosa que me gustaría ver en mi escuela es el uso del laboratorio de ciencias, el cual esta allí, sin utilizarse, no se por que.
 10. Anything you would like to see changed in the village of Sayulita itself? I would like to see sewers and better drainage installed in the various neighborhoods because in the rainy season it becomes a mess with some areas even impassable. Eventually I would like to see the majority of the streets, especially the highly used ones, paved with cobblestone like in the downtown area.
10. ¿Alguna cosa que te gustaría ver que cambiara en Sayulita? Me gustaría ver coladeras y mejor drenaje instalado en las colonias porque cuando llueve, se vuelven un desastre y algunas aéreas son intransitables. También me gustaría ver todas las calles, especialmente las mas usadas, empedradas como en el área del centro.
11. What would you like to tell young people visiting Sayulita for the first time? Come and enjoy the friendliness of our village. Have fun doing everything from exploring the jungle on a quad, surfing in the afternoon, to a canopy or zip line tour. Sayulita is the most peaceful town in the entire state of Nayarit, free of gangs and the problems that go along with them, in my opinion. I would also like to say that Sayulita is to Nayarit, Mexico what Santa Cruz is to California, United Sates. Mexico is a country with individual states just as the United States and Canada and each come with their own "personalities". Diviértanse haciendo de todo, desde explorar la selva en una cuatrimoto, surfear en la tarde, hasta el canopy o un tour en la tirolesa. Sayulita es el pueblo más pacífico de todo el estado de Nayarit, libre de pandillas y de los problemas que vienen con ellas, en mi opinión. También me gustaría decir que Sayulita es a Nayarit, México, lo que Santa Cruz es a California, Estados Unidos. México es un país con estados individuales, como en los Estados Unidos y Canadá y cada uno viene con su propia "personalidad". 12. What would you like to say to your peers and the people of Sayulita? Enjoy the moment and remember that Puerto Vallarta is only 50 years older than Sayulita and can change anytime. Also please realize that money is not the meaning of life and to think twice before selling all of your land. I never want to have to use the phrase that Sayulita is to North America what Hawaii is to Japan.

Disfruten el momento y recuerden que Puerto Vallarta es solo 50 años más viejo que Sayulita y que puede cambiar en cualquier momento. Además, por favor, dense cuenta de que el dinero no es significado de la vida, piensen dos veces antes de vender su tierra. No quiero tener que usar nunca la frase de que Sayulita es a Norte América lo que Hawai es a Japón.
