Chris Sebo and Bob Young first met in 1993, while attending college at UC Boulder.  After losing touch, they reconnected with one another many years later, in 2007. In 2008, Bob proposed to Chris on the way to the hospital, mid-contraction, while she was in labor with their son. They wed in Sayulita on April, 2nd 2015, and currently reside in Denver, Colorado. Chris tells El Sayulero why they chose Sayulita as their wedding destination, what their wedding was like, and much more.

How did you first hear of Sayulita?

A yoga retreat at Haramara Retreat in 2008.

Why did you choose Sayulita as the location for your destination wedding?

Sayulita has a nice beach and a great vibe in town. Also, I liked the lack of big resorts with weddings that feel too packaged.

Which wedding planner did you choose and why?

We chose Somer with Vida Bonita because she was kind and willing to help with our small ceremony.

Were there any other local individuals/companies that helped out with your wedding plans?

La Terrazola provided ceviche and guacamole and Alejandro Chavez in San Pancho played acoustic guitar and sang. We also went with Cattleya Florist in Bucerias and Eva Sicca with Photo Shoots Vallarta.

What was it like planning a destination wedding?

It was effortless having a wedding planner. We didn’t even have a guest list

Where did you have your wedding and what was your wedding day like?

Our wedding took place on the beach near Casa Corazon, which is in front of the public beach access on the north side. It was crazy, but memorable. Just the day before, the beach was pretty desolate, and because of Semana Santa, we came upon a whole crew of camping and festive Mexican folks who ended up “attending” the wedding!

How big was your wedding? Where did your guests travel from?

We didn’t have any guests, just friends we traveled with.  It was a very tiny ceremony with just our kids, our friend officiating, and the other friends that vacationed with us with their children.

What is your most memorable moment from your wedding?

When my daughter, the flower girl, was hesitant, all the other kiddos jumped in to help her walk down the “aisle” and spread flowers.

What did you like about having a destination wedding in Sayulita?

The easy-going vibe and surfing!

What most impressed you about your wedding planner?

Somer was so easy to work with and brought every little request to life.

What did you enjoy most about your stay in Sayulita?

The fantastic food, the shopping, and the time to relax with the family.

Some people have a preconceived notion that Mexico is unsafe? How did you and your guests feel about your safety in Sayulita?

We didn’t have a problem, but we're initially wary.

How did the cost of your destination wedding to Sayulita compare to the cost of friends’ wedding in your home of origin?

It was very affordable.

What advice would you give others considering a destination wedding in Sayulita?

Go for it. Maybe not during Semana Santa if you want a quiet, peaceful ceremony and quieter evenings, but for us that just added to it.

Any final words or thoughts?

So glad we did it!
