Sayulita Jiu Jitsu

Both of my kids have been attending Sayulita Jiujitsu for several years now. They both love it! Tavo is an incredibly dedicated teacher and all the kids love him. The overall community and vibe that has been created by SJJ can only be called a family. I am honored to consider myself a member of that family. (ok, maybe I'm the cousin that nobody likes, but still....) I would give it 10 stars if possible.

Our 11 year-old daughter attended SJJ for the last year, and I to be honest I struggle to list all of the benefits in a single review.

She has gained a ton of knowledge and skill in jiu jitsu from her training, which is always conducted safely and under close supervision (just try to get past Tavo with long nails, I dare you), as well as gained the experience of competing in tournaments around Mexico to test her abilities against real opponents. In the process, she has overcome fears, learned about commitment to her coach and team, and has experienced winning and losing, including all of the complicated emotions that come with both.

The primary instructor, Tavo, is exceptional. First of all, the kids have FUN. It's easy to see from just one class that his knowledge is expansive, and although there are generally a large number of energetic kids attending, his class management skills are totally on point. Yes, he runs a tight ship, but he earns the good behavior of his students by setting clear expectations, showing them respect, and expecting it in return. The kids love and admire Tavo because he is firm but fair, and has a great sense of humor that he brings to every class. They work hard to please Tavo because he shows an obvious and genuine interest in the development of all his students, knowing each by name, and taking care to tailor his approach to their individual needs and personalities. And with us, the parents, he is only a WhatsApp message away in case there are any questions or concerns at any time.

Classes are taught primarily in Spanish, but Tavo can switch to his excellent English any time in case your kiddo is nervous about their language skills.

I'm so proud to have been a part of the SJJ family. The school has a close-knit community of its own nested inside the amazing community of Sayulita, and you will find yourself immediately welcomed into it just by showing up with a positive attitude (and why have anything else!).

I would encourage anyone of any age to drop in and try out a class for free. I am sure you won't regret it!

PS - As a father I can say there is nothing like watching your daughter slip a triangle choke onto an attacker. Thanks for that gift, Tavo. :)
