Rolf Bodywork / Structural Integration chapter
“If you can imagine how it feels to have a fluid, light and balanced body, free of chronic pain, free of stiffness and stress, at ease with itself and the earth’s gravitational field, then you will understand the goals of Structural Integration.”
Dr.Ida P.Rolf,
Founder of Structural Intregration

Structural Integration is a postural restructuring combined with movement and body awareness. The focus of Structural Integration is on improvement of the whole structure of the body. Different angles and degrees of physical pressure are used to stretch fascia and guide the body to a place of easier movement. The process is not intended to “cure” symptoms; its goal is to create a more resilient, higher-energy system free of inhibitions due to past trauma.

A complete treatment consists of 10 sessions.

The human body, like all other material structures, submits to the basic laws of physics. When we are out of balance, gravity drags us down, just as it drags down a building that has lost its architectural integrity. As we move through life and are forced to compensate for injuries, physical or emotional traumas, work habits or habitual activities, the soft tissues in our bodies lose their elasticity. Over time, our bodies get molded into a set shape that prevents us from standing, moving, sitting, or even resting comfortably or efficiently.

Structural Integration works with the connective tissue of the body, a three dimensional myofascial system which literally interconnects everything within the body. Chronic tension in one part of the body will be reflected in changes all through the system, much the same as a balloon, if pinched in one place, reflects the local shortening with strain across its entire surface.

At the beginning of every session of Structural Integration, I start by evaluating a person's structure. I am trained to see bodies - standing still and in motion - in order to determine how and where the body is restricted. Slouched shoulders, knock-knees or bowed legs, flat feet or high arches, sway back, spinal curvatures, a short leg or hip problems - all display complex patterns of strain, tightness, and thickening in the body’s soft tissues.

Through refined and intelligent pressure, specific areas of the body are carefully manipulated to release areas where the body is restricted. The "10 Series" is administered progressively; each session builds upon the last until complete integration of the structure is achieved.
As a result, a feeling of well-being and self-confidence develops as the structure returns to its own dynamic, upright support. A person feels lighter, freer, and has a higher level of energy. Old attitudes that were held and encouraged by stuck body patterns become easier to release.

In what cases can Structural Integration help ?
Bad posture
Limited flexibility
Chronic head, neck, back or hip pain
Frozen shoulders
Plantar faciatis
Whiplash
Repetitive strain injury
Computer related tension
And many, many more

Some practical details
It is possible to book session No 1 as a single-standing session in order to directly experience this type of bodywork before you commit to the entire 10-series. Another possibility is a “mini-series” of 3 sessions. If you decide after that not to continue with the complete 10-series, you still receive the full benefits of the sessions taken.

A session typically lasts 80 -90 minutes. Male clients receive work in underwear or swimsuit, women in two piece swimsuits or bra and underwear. With your permission a photo or digital image may be taken after every session in order to demonstrate “before and after” results. The specific goals of each session will be discussed. You will lye on a massage table during the session and will participate by often being asked to breathe into the area being worked on or to make small, specific movements. Most of the sessions include seated bench work.

Important: Structural Integration is not intended to be a substitute for medical treatment. It does not attempt to diagnose or prescribe. Its sole purpose is to bring order to structure, and it is through the accomplishment of that purpose the function of the whole person is enhanced. Please feel free to contact me for further information.

About Riki
Ulrike (Riki), born in Germany, educated in Europe, chose Mexico as her home in 2001. She successfully pursued her career within the fashion industry for more than 12 years; working and living in Russia, Poland and Italy.  As a result of contemplating her life’s path she made the decision to fundamentally change her way of life.  Mexico with its much slower rhythm of life, its wide open spaces, its natural beauty and the closeness of the Pacific Ocean became the perfect setting for her transformation.

Realizing that she had 'The Touch' Riki enthusiastically chose to follow that calling and make it into her new profession. In 2004, after having graduated from a massage school in Puerto Vallarta and studying Reflexology she started working as a freelance massage therapist. It was important for her not to work in a Spa setting where only routine massages are possible. This way she was able to develop the skill of quick assessment of the body and applying a combination of techniques necessary for the situation at hand. It also gives her the opportunity for constantly learning new techniques and immediately implementing them into her work. Through this continuous “on the job training” the range of work skills she has to offer broadened significantly.

Riki is interested and very sensitive to the fact that every person has their own individual comfort range concerning the amount of pressure applied during bodywork. She actually considers it an art to have the awareness and sensitivity to do profound bodywork while recognizing and respecting every person’s boundaries.

During 2006 and 2007 she studied at the Guild for Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado and became a Licensed Practitioner. Her study included a 500hour course in Anatomy,Physiology, Kinesiology and Integrative Massage. 'Practicing Structural Integration has become the main focus of my work. For me, it is a wonderful way of being of service to others and realizing myself.

Testimonials
Riki is a very experienced professional. I get a lot of massages back in California and this one was special. Riki has "kind" hands, strong and gentle: a healing touch. She knows just the right depth to go to release that tense muscle. Oh boy, it felt great. By the end of the massage I felt lighter, looser and more at ease, ready to have a great vacation in Mexico.
Martha W.,Teacher of dance and movement meditation, Berkeley, Cal.

I am from Boulder, Colorado, the virtual land of massage. In fact the Boulder Massage School is known as the Harvard of the profession. Riki’s massage was as good as the best massage available in the United States. Highly recommended !
David L. Architect from Boulder, CO

"A healing massage from Riki is more than a massage. She is trained and experienced in a variety of techniques. Her strong hands open your body and mind to relaxation. I wish I had discovered her before my last day in Sayulita!"
Barbara S., Tribal Trust Foundation
Los Olivos, CA

" I wish I could get Riki to move to Chicago. My life is very hectic and I seem to store all of my tension in my neck and shoulders. I found Riki's technique and skill so extraordinary that I booked her twice in a week."
Caryn A., Global Marketing Leader from Chicago, I
