Greetings 5,186 El Sayulero Readers,
The brief (but fairly steady) rain this morning most likely comes as a nice surprise to the majority of Sayulita's residents though short-term vacationers were probably a bit dismayed. The streets received a nice dampening and all the foliage can shine a little brighter now that a layer of dust is removed.
Activity has been great on the Sayulita Forum with two particular posts many of our readers will enjoy:
1. "If You Go" contains some great words of advice from a family who came, explored, and enjoyed Sayulita thanks to making just a little extra effort to understand the local culture. Both residents and visitors could benefit by taking the time to read Mike's post.
2. Photographer, Sean Clayton, posted a perfect image capturing the youthful energy portrayed by the children in last week's Revolution Day parade.

In the summer of 2009, secondary school students, aged 13 to 16, participated in a summer camp sponsored by PEACE Mexico - a local non-profit organization. During the camp, the students developed a plan for theSayulita Snap Project. They tallied their strengths and weaknesses for the project and decided upon 6 themes they hoped would inspire interesting pictures.
These themes include love, peace, animals, pollution, nature and sport. In small groups, they took pictures according to these themes. More than 12 of these pictures are found here, in this calendar.

The monies raised through the selling of these calendars will go directly to the Escuela Secundaria Revolución Mexicana in Sayulita. A chemistry lab, once abandoned, will be restored for use.
En el verano del 2009, los estudiantes de secundaria, con edades comprendidas entre 13 y 16 años, participaron en un campamento de verano patrocinado por Peace Mexico - una organización local sin ánimo de lucro. El campamento de verano estuvo centrado en la enseñanza y desarrollo del espíritu empresarial y de la lengua inglesa a través de un programa interactivo y divertido para los estudiantes.
Durante el campamento, los alumnos tuvieron que desarrollar un plan de negocio para el proyecto de Sayulita Snap. Analizaron sus fortalezas y debilidades, sus oportunidades y amenazas, así como el desarrollo de un plan de marketing para el proyecto.
Tras sucesivas y reñidas votaciones se decidieron por seis temas que inspirarían sus fotografías. Los elegidos fueron: el amor, la paz, los animales, la contaminación, la naturaleza y el deporte. | | Sayulita Garbage Pick-up
 Sayulita now has a scheduled garbage pick-up for both residents and visitors alike. The company in charge is funded by the Municipal and called GIRSA, or Grupo Internacional de Representaciones, Sociedad Anónima. This organization is solely responsible for all the removal of trash in Sayulita.
The new days of the week for trash pick-up are Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, with no pick up on holidays. Some upcoming holidays include Christmas, New Years Day and January 6th (Dia de Los Santos Reyes).
 They begin the trash pick up at 6am at the turn-off of to Highway 200 and work there way in to the village using a five ton truck with three to six people. This is a combination of a tractor and a compactor. They also deploy smaller vehicles to pick up trash in the hard to get areas.
For both residents and visitors alike please understand that if you put out garbage the night before or on the wrong day it could easily end up on the streets, beaches and even the ocean if animals get into it.
The tradition in Sayulita is for the community to come together and do there best to keep their home beautiful and for this we thank you.
Sayulita Basura Recoleccion
Sayulita tiene ahora una recolección de basura programada en Sayulita, tanto para los residentes y visitantes por igual. La empresa encargada es financiado por el Municipal y pidió GIRSA, o. Grupo Internacional de Representaciones, Sociedad Anónima Esta organización es el único responsable para la eliminación de todas las de la basura en Sayulita.
Los nuevos días de la semana de recolección de basura es de lunes, miércoles y viernes por la mañana para el pueblo sin recoger en los días festivos. Algunos incluyen próximas vacaciones de Navidad, Año Nuevo y el 6 de enero (Día de los Santos Reyes).
Que comenzar tan temprano como las 6 am y empezar por el desvío de la carretera 200 y trabajan en forma en la que el pueblo mediante un período de cinco toneladas de camiones con tres a seis personas. Esta es una combinación de un tractor y un compactador. También desplegar vehículos más pequeños para recoger basura en las áreas difíciles de conseguir.
La tradición en Sayulita es para la comunidad para unirse y hacer allí lo posible para mantener su hermosa casa. Para los residentes y visitantes por igual por favor, comprenda que si se pone la basura a los primeros que podrían terminar fácilmente en las calles, playas e incluso el mar, si los animales entrar en ella.

 There is also an event later that evening where a percentage of the profits will be donated to the clinic.  This little red "tiger" was found alone in a plastic can. It's about 6 weeks old and male.
He's a very cute little fellow with his terracota red fur and blue eyes. He's healthy
and will get neutered as soon as he's a little bit older.
Because he's still a baby he will adapt to any house and home real quick and make a great pet.
 Ese pequeno tigre rojo fue encontrado en un bote de plastico. Tiene mas o menos 6 semanas de edad y es macho. Es un muchacho muy dulce con su pelo rojo y ojos azules. Es sano y sera esterilizado tan pronto que tenga la edad adecuada.

73rd Anniversary

Considered to be the most beautiful "flower " of the ejido, Saraly Rodriguez Palomera, local horsemen, local authorities, and the president of the ejido Melesio Virgin Solis and local ejiditarios marched in the traditional parade honoring the 73rd anniversary of the granting of land to the ejido of Sayulita.
The group was accompanied by the marching band from the local school, and loud cries were heard through the main streets of the community, after which the parade returned from the plaza to the baseball field, where attendees enjoyed prepared food and beverages.
The ejido of Sayulita was given their land on November 24, 1936 when it originally existed as an extension of Jaltemba estate, where its residents earned their living via agriculture, livestock, fishing, coconut cultivation and harvesting of coco oil and bananas.
Its first president was Don Jesus de Santiago. The ejido originaly had 97 ejidatarios, of which the sole survivor of these founders is Leonardo Gallegos.
A major character involved in this change land ownership was the widow of Don Santiago Carena, Carmen Camarena who was heir and owner of the Jaltemba estate. She transferred ownership of the land to the actual workers/ejidotarios.
As of today, the number of ejidatarios officially recognized by the assembly numbers 409 members.
Festejan 73 aniversario del ejido de Sayulita
Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit/Noviembre 24.- Acompañado de la flor más bella del ejido, Saraly Palomera Rodríguez, charros, un plantel escolar, autoridades auxiliares, el presidente del núcleo ejidal Melesio Solís Virgen, dio inicio el tradicional desfile con motivo del 73 aniversario de la dotación de tierras al ejido de Sayulita.
El contingente acompañado por la banda de guerra de la escuela local, un mariachi, con gran algarabía avanzó por las principales calles de la comunidad, retornando en la plaza hasta llegar al campo deportivo del béisbol, lugar donde los asistentes disfrutaron de un delicioso platillo y frescas aguas.
El ejido de Sayulita fue dotado de tierras un 24 de noviembre del año de 1936, después de ser la hacienda la extensión de Jaltemba, donde la gente se dedicaba a la agricultura, la ganadería, la pesca y al cultivo y cosecha del coco de aceite y el plátano.
Su primer presidente fue don Jesús de Santiago (QEPD). Entonces contaba con 97 ejidatarios, quedando como único sobreviviente de los fundadores Leonardo Gallegos.
Finalmente Sayulita quedó como cabecera del ejido por que justo ahí estaba anclada la hacienda, donde se acopiaba todas las cosechas de Lo de Marcos, San Pancho, Las Lomas e Higuera Blanca, para posteriormente embarcarlas a sus destinos.
En este cambio fue trascendente la viuda de Don Santiago Carena, Carmen Camarena quien era dueña heredera y que en su momento tuvo a bien de manera pacifica entregar las tierras a los trabajadores de la hacienda que en ese entonces agruparon 97 y que posteriormente se hizo una extensión de más de 4 mil hectáreas sumando un total de más de 9 mil 666 las que el ejido posee en definitiva como dotación.
Con el tiempo surgió el ingreso de más ejidatarios o de personas que llegaron a trabajar al ejido, aumentando a 409 ejidatarios reconocidos por la asamblea.
Finalmente con la entrada de procede en el 2000, algunos ejidatarios se aparcelaron y algunos mantienen su certificado parcelario que forma parte del ejido y otros hicieron de manera individual la solicitud del dominio pleno, lo que hoy en día vienen a disminuir la propiedad ejidal. | ¡Que Madre! Mexico is a good place to be if you're a baby. Sure, the whole world loves a wee one, but in Mexico, they really love babies, and they're not shy about showing it. With Mexican culture so centered on the family, there's a familiarity that reaches beyond bloodlines, into an extended network of "Tias" and "Tios" who look after all of the neighborhood niños as their own. This is certainly the case in Sayulita, where so many families have grown together through the generations. Children are addressed as "hijo" (son) or "hija" (daughter), regardless of relation - listen in the next time you're waiting in line at Mi Tiendita, and you'll surely hear a youngster addressed as such.
As a gringa, it took some time to accept the familiarity strangers assumed with my infant. We norteamericanos love our space, and while we might ogle babies, touching is a no-no, and asking to hold a stranger's baby would seem downright weird. In Sayulita and Vallarta, people regularly express affection towards our baby -- pinching a cheek, touching a leg, asking to hold him. As a new mom, I used to shield him from the attention. I've since learned to embrace this character of my adoptive country. I see in Maximo's face how he responds to his Mexican "Tias", with a joy that mirrors the love for him in their eyes. I appreciate the familiarity with babies that comes from a belief that children should be held, kissed, and loved, by whomever is close enough to pitch in. Now when someone asks me, "¿Me prestas su bebe?" (literally, "Will you loan me your baby?"), I usually smile and say yes, thankful for the helping hand, and the new amigo that my son has watching his back.

México es un buen lugar para un bebé a crecer. Por supuesto, todo el mundo ama a un bebé, pero en México, son encantados con los bebés, y no son tímidos a mostrarlo. En la cultura mexicana, centrada en la familia, hay una familiaridad que va más allá de líneas de sangre, en una red de "tías" y "tíos" que cuidan de todos los niños de la colonia como sus propios. Es ciertamente el caso en Sayulita, donde muchas familias han crecido juntos a través de las generaciones. Los niños son referidos como "hijo" o "hija", independientemente de la relación - escuchar en la próxima vez que estés en fila en Mi Tiendita, y seguramente escuchará un joven tratado como asi.
Como una gringa, me tomé un tiempo para aceptar el conocimiento que gente asumió con mi bebé. Los norteamericanos nos gusta nuestro espacio, y miramos con admiración los bebés, pero a tocarlos es un tabú, y pidiendo a abrazar un niño que no conoces parece un poco extraño. Aqua, muchas personas expresan admiración hacia nuestro bebé - pellizcando la mejilla, tocando la pierna, y pidiendo que lo carga. Como nueva mamá, traté de protegerlo de la atención. Pero he aprendido a apreciar este carácter de mi país adoptivo. Veo en la cara de Máximo cómo el responde a sus "tías" mexicanas, con una alegría que refleja el amor por él en los ojos de ellas. Agradezco la familiaridad con los bebés que viene de la creencia de que debe mantener a niños, la besó, y le encantaba, por quienquiera que sea cerca como para ayudar. Ahora, cuando alguien me pregunta, "¿Me prestas su bebe?", me sonríe y dice que sí, agradecidos por la ayuda, y el amigo nuevo que mi hijo va a tener en su mundo.

 Happy Holidays All! Some of you right now are nursing a hangover from last nights' festivities, while others are just getting warmed up. Either way, it's the start of the party season, and you know you will be overindulging. We will be. So, here is our "Minimal Impact Sayulita Holiday Drink Guide", designed so you can enjoy your beverages, survive the parties, and not have done too much damage by January 1st.
1. Whenever possible eliminate the sugar and juices from your drinks. Order a margarita "sin Jarabe", which means without sugar. Order your vodka cranberry with a SPLASH of cranberry, not a whole glass full of juice.
2. Alcohol dehydrates the body. For every drink you have with alcohol, have a glass of water.
3. Consider your drinks as your desert and avoid the pies, cakes, cookies, and sweets. If it helps, pretend every drink you have is the same as eating a Twinky.
4. Move! Walk the beach with your beer. Hike to the store, don't drive, for that next bottle of tequila. Build a sand castle that looks like a margarita glass, while you're drinking your margaritas.
5. Always clean up the day after your party. Just like a house, your body needs cleaning and regular maintenance to keep it strong and looking good. Without it, it will fall apart. Take an exercise class, go surfing, take a hike around town, go swimming, bodysurf the waves,... Whatever "cleaning products" you prefer to use doesn't matter. What does matter is that you use them.
Now you have a simple guide to surviving the holiday alcohol onslaught, as well as a better understanding of why our business tagline is "Earn Your Margaritas". Enjoy the season. Play hard, play safe, have fun, be good to each other and yourself.

"Montezuma's revenge"

 Montezuma is back! And he is looking for revenge! That's why this week we are talking about diarrhea.
This is by far the second most frequent cause of visit to our office and it does come in several different ways of presentation.
First of all let's define diarrhea as having three or more unformed stools in 24 hrs, commonly accompanied by cramps and nausea, and most of the times it is an infectious disease, caused by a bacteria, a virus or a parasite.
As always, prevention is the best way to go:
1. Use puriied water when brushing teeth.
2. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice.
3. Always wash vegetables and fruits before eating them, using a disinfectant such as Mycrodin or chlorine.
4. Take some sort of probiotics.
5. Avoid self-treating yourself with over the counter medication such as lomotil or imodium, as bacterias might stay longer in the intestines.
6. This one is the most difficult in Sayulita: Avoid eating in non-established (street vendor.) food businesses. I know, I know, tacos and quesadillas are simply irresistible, I love them myself.
The signs and symptoms that require medical attention are: diarrhea more than 7 times in 24 hrs, fever, vomiting, dehydration, severe cramps, blood or mucous in the stools, or fainting. And because of the different sources of diarrhea, it must be diagnosed and treated accordingly with rehydration, antibiotics and anti-diarrheal medications.

Salud en Sayulita: La venganza
de Moctezuma
Es el regreso de Moctezuma y busca venganza! Es por eso que esta semana vamos a hablar acerca de la diarrea.
Es por mucho la segunda causa mas frecuente de visita a nuestro consultorio y se presenta de muchas maneras diferentes.
Antes que otra cosa definamos diarrea, que es tener tres o mas evacuaciones no formadas en 24 horas, comúnmente se acompaña de dolor colico y nausea, y muchas de las veces es originado por una infección causada por una bacteria, un virus o un parasito.
Como siempre, la prevención es la mejor manera de actuar:
1. Utiliza agua segura para el lavado de dientes.
2. Bebe únicamente agua embotellada y evita el hielo.
3. Siempre lava las frutas y verduras antes de comerlas, usa un desinfectante como Mycrodyn o cloro.
4. Toma algún tipo de probioticos.
5. Evita tratamientos con medicamentos de libre acceso como Lomotil o Imodium, ya que las bacterias pueden permanecer mas tiempo en tus intestinos.
6. Esta es una de las mas difíciles: Evita comer comida en establecimientos informales (sobre la calle). Y lo se, lo se, los tacos y las quesadillas son simplemente irresistibles
Los signos y sintomas que requieren atencion medica son: diarrhea en mas de 7 ocasiones en 24 horas, fiebre, vomito, deshidratacion, dolor abdominal intenso, moco o sangre en las evacuaciones y/o desmayo. Y debido a los diferentes orígenes de la diarrea, debe ser diagnosticada y tratada adecuadamente con rehidratación, antibióticos y medicamento antidiarreico.

Great Attendance
Sayulita, Mexico, November 24, 2009- Close to 100 people of all ages attended an informative educational presentation by Frank D. Smith, Director, Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde, on the protection of our local marine sea turtles at the Punta Sayulita community Beach House in Sayulita last Thursday evening. The 1 ½ hour presentation was followed by an after sunset release of hundreds of new turtle hatchlings by the attendees that were raised in Group Ecologico's turtle farm in San Pancho.
Since 1992, Smith, along with Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde's volunteers have dedicated their efforts to
the preservation of the endangered Ridley and Leather Back Sea Turtles which reside in Bay of Banderas
area. Groupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde was the first environmental non-profit civil association of the region
with the special interest in the protection of the marine turtles. Through the Mexican Government, SEMARNAT
(Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) the Group was granted permission to continue its work
along our neighboring beaches.

field of Spirituality, Holistic Healing and Integrative Medicine, traveled to Sayulita November 19 - 23 and
provided a thought provoking and heartwarming exploration and discussion of Inspired Living and what it
means to embrace the very finest of self, soul, and community. Attended by approximately 50 invitees at the
Punta Sayulita community Beach House in Sayulita, Dr. Ellerby's presentation, entitled Inspired Living:
Embracing the Energy of Life, explored the pursuit of vitality and meaning while providing three challenges to
the attendees, encouraging them to find their own growing edge in life.
 During the course of the presentation,
lasting about 1 ½ hours, Ellerby used engaging stories to describe philosophies of building community, spiritual awakening, and personal relationships with others. Dr. Ellerby then took questions from the invitees followed
by a signing of his newest book, Return to the Sacred. According to Ellerby, "Sayulita is one of those special
places in the world where the level of spirituality and community among its residents is a core principal that can
bring out the best in people and I can see why Sayulita attracts so many visitors and residents from around the
world...my family and I will definitely be returning to Sayulita as often as possible." | |

3. Born in Sayulita? I was actually born in the neighboring town of La Cruz, but moved to Sayulita 16 years ago.

4. Family History and Information? 20 years ago I married my husband Oscar, in La Cruz and together we have 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl as well as 2 grandchildren.

5. Education Level? I finished the 4th grade of Elementary School

 6. Business History? I first started working at the age of ten years old. I took care of women who recently had babies: cooking, cleaning, etc. After that I worked for various restaurants including Mira Mar in La Cruz, Alas Blancas, Don Pedro's, Choco Banana, Villa Amor and the cafeteria's at both the Elementary and Junior High Schools here in Sayulita. Finally, five years ago I decided to start my own food stand or "Loncheria" located at #28 Calle Del Palmar located just a block from the Elementary School and the beach. Here I can make just about anything, from traditional Mexican breakfasts to a variety of lunch options. Some of my specialties include tortas, pozole, chiles rellenos, mole and burritos.

Cuidaba mujeres que habían dado a luz, limpiando, cocinando, etc. Después de eso trabaje en varios restaurantes incluyendo Miramar en La Cruz, Alas Blancas, Don Pedro's, Choco Banana, Villa Amor y en las loncherías de la primaria y la secundaria de Sayulita. 7. What is your favorite food in Sayulita? Out of all of the food that I have prepared and tried I have to say that Pozole is my all-time favorite! I have loved it since I was a little girl growing up.

8. What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? I really love the relaxing atmosphere Sayulita gives me. I enjoy the peace, tranquility and waking up with the sounds of waves and chickens. I just really feel safe here.

 9. What do you feel are some changes you would like to see in Sayulita? I would really like to see the government provide the children's lunches to them at no cost at both the public Elementary and Junior High Schools.
9. Cuales son los cambios que te gustaría ver en Sayulita? Me gustaría mucho ver que el gobierno provee de comida gratis para los estudiantes de la primaria y la secundaria.
10. What would you tell the first time visitor to Sayulita? I would like to encourage the first time visitor to feel free to interact with the local community and don't be intimidated if you don't speak the language. Everyone is welcome and I would just like people to feel comfortable here and add to the positive energy our community provides.
