This month’s recipient of Sayulita Life’s $5,000 donation is Sayulita’s Campamento Tortuguero, or the turtle camp. Campamento Tortuguero in Sayulita is a voluntary community project, located on the north end of Sayulita’s beach across the street from the Pajaro de Fuego condominium complex. The goal of this Sayulita organization is to relocate sea turtle nests in order to keep them safe, as well as to educate locals and visitors on how to protect the turtles from poaching. For the last several years, the Sayulita turtle camp has been dedicated to preserving the native sea turtles that come every year in large numbers to Sayulita’s beaches to make their nests and lay their eggs.

The donation from Sayulita Life will help the camp by purchasing materials that will improve the facilities of the turtle nests’ incubation laboratory. The donation will specifically buy wooden boards, shelves, electricity supplies, and thermometers.

The activities that the turtle camp carries out in their program are: beach patrols to collect the eggs from the turtles, carrying-out the incubation in their laboratory and in the corral, the release of the baby turtles from the evening to sunset at the North end of Sayulita’s beach, as well as beach cleanings and environmental education activities with students from schools in our community.

The camp is most known for their “turtle release” events where anyone can come and help release the baby turtles to the sea, or even adopt a nest. They ask that people who wish to participate in the releases please bring their mask/cubre boca, and a voluntary donation to help assist their program.

Campamento Tortuguero continues to request help from volunteers for the activities mentioned above. If someone is interested, they can find more information by calling 322-213-27381 (for Spanish only), or call 322-230-1762 (for English only).

If you have more questions about the camp or about how to get involved, please email the camp director, Alejandra. For more information about Campamento Tortuguero and their mission, please visit their Sayulita Life Web Page.
