Hello readers! I thought it would be a good time to formally introduce myself to all of you so you have an idea of who the person is behind the scenes sending you the Sayulero each week! My name is Aanya Sheikh-Taheri; I am a 32 year old writer, poet, teacher at Costa Verde, surfer, dancer, dog lover, and traveler. I grew up in Redmond, a suburb just outside of Seattle, Washington. My father was born and raised in Iran, and was the first generation from his family to immigrate to the United States at the young age of 17 in order to pursue an education and a better life. Because I grew up in a multicultural home and traveled to Iran in my first abroad trip at just 12 years old, I developed a deep love and appreciate early in my life for learning about other cultures around the world. I first discovered Sayulita in 2015 when a friend recommended it to me as a great place for a solo traveler to go that was looking for a place that would revive and brighten their soul. And that is exactly what I found.

As eclectic and diverse as Sayulita is, and as much as I love tacos, sometimes I find myself really craving flavors that are special and different from the ordinary or typical meals we find in town. Thus, when Zatar restaurant first opened in Sayulita in February of 2018, I was so excited to see a restaurant with a totally different flavor profile and concept than anything else that existed in town. Since then, Zatar has easily become my favorite restaurant in town, and one I enthusiastically recommend to all of my friends. There are so many menu items at Zatar that are my favorite that I actually joke with my friends about how I could pull off eating there every day. Not only is every dish deliciously cooked to perfection with locally sourced, fresh ingredients, but most of the menu items are made from scratch daily, directly in the restaurant. The food is simply a labor of love; this fact combined with the beautiful ambiance and decor of the restaurant makes you and your taste-buds feel as though you are transported to another part of the world when you dine at Zatar. For me, eating at Zatar feels like eating a meal prepared by a beloved family member. I talk with owner Kelly Majid about Zatar’s beginnings, what the menu is like, and how Zatar is unique from other restaurants in Sayulita.

Recently I was shopping at our Friday Mercado here in Sayulita with my son-in-law, who is a great professional chef. We were at the vegetable stand where there are numerous Asian grown veggies, as well as many others. Alex became so excited when he found a bowl of green and red Shishito Peppers. He bought all that they had at the Mercado! Being that I had never even seen or heard of these peppers before, I was very curious to see how he would prepare them. I had all the ingredients he needed to prepare these awesome little peppers. I just loved the result, and they are simple to prepare with only five ingredients!

Sayulita is known for many special things, one of them being the strong culture of creative arts and creative expression that exists in our community. In Sayulita we are lucky to have such a diverse range of skilled musical artists to share their gift with us. Local Sayulita resident Ryan Webb is not only a great husband and soon to be father, but a talented musician and DJ, who also somehow finds time to give back to the community. DJ Webb graces the stage in many of our local venues and bars. Ryan tells me about his DJ’ing, his passion for music, and how this led him to pursue it as a hobby.

Thanks to the efforts of local members of our community who have freely given their time, this baseball program initiative which began several years ago has really taken off, now with nearly two hundred local youth participating in it from several different neighboring communities. Thanks to their hard work and time, our youth can now enjoy a fully operational baseball program with proper equipment, in order to play competitively in games against other teams from Tepic to Puerto Vallarta. I talk with one of the organizers/volunteers Matt Stooke about the program, how it first started, and what it is like now.

Music pretty much sets the tone for every event and is one of the top priorities for creating an unforgettable wedding day. The right wedding band can showcase your personality and set the right mood during the celebration, from beginning until end. Thus, why not hire the best of the best? Esaú Music in Sayulita is lead by multi-talented Esaú, who specializes in creating unique moments as a solo artist, or together with his band, Tatewari, for fiery gypsy music. Whether you'd prefer some Mexican traditional pieces, authentic flamenco guitar, or romantic classics, Esaú is a pleasure to work with. It's easy to see why his experience, passion and natural charm made him a Bahia de Banderas wedding favorite.

As many of you have noticed, professional workers and engineers have begun the construction and placement of the new emissor at the river bed which connects to the main beach. This is part of an ongoing project from Sayulita’s new Sewage Treatment Plant. I talked with key members from the board of Grupo Pro Sayulita, who began this project several years ago and remain the liasons with the government officials now in charge of the plant and project. All of the projects have been designed to upgrade previous wastewater management systems. Phase 1 began more than two years ago, and phase 3, being done now, will be completed in the next few weeks.
