 A new church of Evangelical/Christian faith has opened up at #18 Calle Miramar, giving both visitors and residents another option for religious practices here in Sayulita. The church has been organized by Pastor Paul Cathey and his wife Mauru along with their two daughters, Marissa and Isabella. Serving as missionaries in various parts of Mexico for the past seven years, Pastor Paul originally comes from Costa Mesa, California and has recently re-located to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta.
 Sunday services are held between 11am-12:30pm every Sunday as well as bible study on Tuesdays at 4:30pm for women and Fridays at 5:30pm for men. The bible study classes and the Sunday services are all held in both English and Spanish. On Christmas Eve., December 24th there will be a special service held at 7pm with refreshments being served.
Everyone is welcome to come and sit in on both the Sunday services as well as the bible study classes. All monetary donations will go directly back into the Sayulita community as the church is supported by outside sources.
Nueva Iglesia Se Abre En Sayulita
Una nueva iglesia evangélica o de la fe cristiana se ha abierto en el # 18 Calle Miramar, ofreciendo tanto a los visitantes y residentes una opción más para la religión. Está siendo organizado por el Pastor Paul Cathey y su esposa Mauru y dos hijas, Marissa y Isabella. "Negro"  Meet Negro. He was found on the highway near Nuevo Vallarta. A Sayulita resident saw him in the night and had the good heart to pick him up and bring him to Sayulitanimals clinic for a check up. He was extremely dehydrated. He is in foster care now but needs a home with someone that will really care, help and support him on his way to better health. He is 1-2 years old, super sweet; a real labrador through and through Will someone please give him a chance to live a healthy life?

 If you thought the waves were BIG in Sayulita last week - you were right. David Almeida of Duende Surf Shop, who has surfed here for many years, said the swells were some of the biggest he's seen in 19 years.
"I was hardly thinking, just going on instinct," David said of his experience surfing last week. "I get goose bumps just talking about it." Getting back out wasn't easy - he said it took up to 40 minutes to paddle back out. "In one and a half hours I caught about four waves," he said. They were waves to remember.
 According to Ed Temperley of Magicseaweed.com, a website dedicated to surfing information and news, the larger than normal swells (estimated at 10 to 12 feet) came from a sizable low that traveled south from the Northwest and "produced the biggest Pacific waves of the 2009 season" and perhaps the largest seen in several years.
"This was a very unusual swell event," Temperley explained. "It was the westerly angle in the swell which allowed such large waves to propagate all the way to the Western Mexican coastline."
 Information posted on Magic Seaweed's site explains that powerful winds pushed seas as high as 40 feet down the North Pacific Coast. This type of swell is called "Aleutian" - it is formed near the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. This weather system created very large swells here in Sayulita starting December 7 and carrying on until last weekend.
Denise Diaque, who works at Lunazul Surf Shop, said the giant waves were welcomed by veteran surfers, but a potential hazard for beginners. She explained that normally, Sayulita has a one-point break, but last week the waves were standing all the way down the beach, from Villa Amor to the Trailer Park Beach.
 No injuries were reported at the surf shop. However, one surfer's board cracked in two when he wiped out on one of those huge waves. "Sometimes those waves broke right in the middle at a 90 degree angle - it rolls you," Diaque said, adding that if that roll happens close to shore, there's the danger of smashing a board or a human being.
"The guy was OK," she said, holding up the broken board, which now has a piece of wood holding it together. During the biggest swells, staff members were selective when renting boards to beginners, and in some cases insisted they take lessons before venturing out alone.

 I shop Mom + Pop! Whether you've known Sayulita for decades or days, it's obvious we're a community squarely in the midst of progress and change. New buildings going up; old buildings gutted and remodeled; new businesses opening doors every week. Love it or hate it, change is unavoidable, and it's also part of what keeps a town like Sayulita dynamic and fresh.
Like so many small towns, we owe much of our charm to the family-owned businesses that line our streets, from the taco stands and churro vendors, to the mini-supers, fruterias, restaurants, and galleries. The businesses that have fed and supplied us over the years are run by our neighbors, friends, and extended families - which helps to keep us all invested in the town we live and do business in. As a mother, I appreciate the relationships I have with shopkeepers who know my family by name and know that we too run a business here. I want my son to grow up in a world where local businesses thrive, where shops and restaurants have individual personality, where the little guy has a chance.
 Faced with constant new choices of where to shop and eat, we have an opportunity to show our support for the small family businesses that help make Sayulita what it is - a unique and magical place unlike any other. Choosing to shop at local businesses might mean spending a few extra pesos here and there, which also means it won't be viable for everyone all the time. But if you can afford it, isn't it worth a little extra to keep Sayulita's families in business? I think so - so I'll choose to shop Mom + Pop.

Eligo a Comprar Con Los Locales
 Ya sea que sepa Sayulita durante décadas o días, es evidente que somos una comunidad en medio de progreso y cambio. Nuevos edificios subiendo; edificios antiguos eviscerado y remodelado; nuevos negocios abriendo las puertas cada semana. Si te gusta o no, cambio es inevitable, y también es parte de lo que hace que un pueblo como Sayulita dinámico y fresco.
Al igual que muchos pueblos pequeños, debemos gran parte de nuestro encanto a las empresas familiares que conforman nuestras calles - de los taquerias y los vendedores de churros, a los mini-supers, fruterias, restaurantes y galerías. Las empresas que han alimentado y nos proporcionó durante los años son los negocios de nuestros vecinos, amigos y familias extendidas - y esto ayuda a mantener a todos invertido en el pueblo en que vivimos y hacer negocios. Como madre, valoro las relaciones que tienen con los empresarios que conocen a mi familia por nombre y saben que nosotros también tenemos un negocio aqua.  The other day we were on the beach waxing up our boards, getting ready to take advantage of a clean Northwest swell, when we struck up a conversation with Tomer Yogev and Monika Black, a young couple visiting from Chicago. After learning that this was their first time visiting Sayulita, the conversation quickly turned to fitness. What made this talk unique was that they were telling us, not us telling them, about how easy it was to stay active and eat healthy in Sayulita, and, that despite indulging in a few margaritas and coconut shrimp on a regular basis for 6 days in a row, for the first time ever they were returning from a vacation leaner and healthier than before, without even trying.
So how do you have margaritas and coconut shrimp every day, yet manage to get in shape at the same time? Here's how Tomer and Monika did it: On the days they felt like getting out of bed before 10am, they would quickly check the pages of the Sayulitalife.com "fitness" section, then go join the class that most interested them. Monika loved our (Mexifit's) Power Ropes class, and the view, at Palapa Brisa Mar, while Tomer was really starting to get into Yoga after his second class with Jill at Om Yoga. Every day, class or not, breakfast was always a top priority (turns out they read last weeks' article that we wrote on the benefits of breakfast). From Tropical House, to Rollie's, to Iguana Azul, to Breakfast Net, to Lettie's Luncheria, there was always a fresh cooked breakfast to be found and it usually consisted of fresh fruit, egg white omelets loaded with local vegetables, refried beans, and perfectly blended cappuccinos and espressos.
 With or without a morning exercise class, priority #1 after breakfast was to find a nice spot on the beach where the peaceful energy of the ocean combined with the abundance of available activities, giving Tomer and Monika what they felt was a perfect balance of rest and recreation. Tomer rode the first wave of his life after renting a board from Pazzport Surf School, and was hooked. "Talk about a total body workout!" he said. Monika liked to hike the beach to the far north end, usually after waking from a nice little beach snooze. By adding some walking lunges, push-ups, and light sprints to the hike, a leisurely stroll was turned into a perfect workout. Then there was the bodysurfing (aka playing in the waves), snorkeling, Frisbee throwing, kayaking and stand-up-paddleboarding, all taking place between servings of homemade tamales from Carmen The Tamale Beach Lady, ceviche from Constenos, fresh caught Mahi Mahi with garlic and lime from Don Pedro's, and of course the coconut shrimp from Capitan Pablo's.
When we asked Tomer and Monika what made this vacation more active and healthier than others, their answer was simple: easy access to fun activities that don't feel like "workouts", with fresh and healthy food everywhere. They also mentioned that it didn't hurt their motivation to be surrounded by fit bodies and active, happy people playing.
As Shelly and I paddled out for a few waves, we were once again reminded of the abundance of opportunity, and unsolicited motivation, that Sayulita offers those looking to be healthy and active. As I dropped in and rode my first wave of the day I couldn't help but think, I'm getting a total body workout!

Earning Our Margaritas Everyday,

El otro día estábamos en la playa encerado nuestras tablas, preparándose para tomar ventaja de un swell del noroeste limpio, cuando se entabló una conversación con Tomer Yogev y Monika Negro, una joven pareja de visita desde Chicago. Después de enterarse de que esta era su primera vez visitando a Sayulita, la conversación se convirtió rápidamente a la aptitud.
