Twenty two years ago, life circumstances caused Barbara Powers to reevaluate her life. Due to an illness, she decided to take a good look at what she was putting into her body and how it affected her. “I had very little knowledge about the nutrients our body needs to maintain optimal health, the meaning of good live food and the disease provoking processed foods that have taken over society. My illness prompted me to start down a learning path. I discovered how the industry had changed our food and destroyed the nutrients they provide. I learned how to read labels to find out about ingredients. I learned about manufacturing processes that destroy the nutrients in live foods and the damage of all the synthetic chemicals and preservatives utilized to flavor and give an attractive presentation of the foods they are creating. In my search for 100% organic food I learned that there were no true 'organic stores' in México,” shared Barbara.  Through this discovery and her newfound passion and belief in eating healthy, organic foods to nurture the body, the first tienda, Terrenal was founded.

The original store is in Monterrey, as well as a second store. “We decided to open a third store in Sayulita because nothing like it was around and my dear friend Sajeela, the owner of Haramara Retreat and now my partner in this venture, who follows the same path, convinced me that it was time Sayulita had access to live, nurturing, truly organic products”,” Barbara said. Her commitment to only stocking certified organic foods is impressive, as she personally looks at each label and each ingredient that is in the products that they carry. “People call me the radical because I don’t allow anything that isn’t 100% natural and organic. Some of the companies I work with aren’t certified because they are too small, but I personally visit the premises where the product is planted and cultivated. I look through the process of manufacturing,” stated Barbara.

The selection of healthy, all natural, organic food and products found in Terrenal is vast. There are 13 different kinds of Mexican heirloom beans, non-modified flours, 100% heirloom corn tortillas with no additives, vegan truffles, kombucha made in-house, croissants, baguettes, cheeses, butters, and 100% natural and healthy beef, lamb, bacon, ham, hot dogs, and chicken breasts. Terrenal Organic Products partners with Organic Select and certain items, such as yogurt, cream, and sprouts that come from them.

Terrenal Sayulita also carries personal items, like toothpaste, soap, and shampoo. They also sell stainless steel water bottles, cleaning products, homeopathic products, and more.

“It’s all about getting back to the roots. Everything is 100% healthy. There are no chemicals used,” shared Barbara. “People coming into our store don’t have to take time to read the labels. We’ve already done that for them. We only sell real food to nurture your body and maintain your health at optimal levels,” she added.
