Greetings 3,954 online Sayulero readers,

The celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe has begun. Hence the fireworks "bombas" at 4:30 every morning. If you head to the plaza after the first evening "bomba", usually around 6:15 PM, you will be able to view the nightly processions of a specific neighborhood from its location in Sayulita to the church. The night of December 12th combines all neighborhoods together and the celebration in the plaza will last until the early hours of the morning.

School Fundraiser in the Sayulita Plaza, this Saturday at 5:00 PM

This Saturday, December 6th, at the Plaza in Sayulita the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and teachers from Damian Carmona Elementary School are holding a Mexican Party fundraiser with traditional Mexican food including tostadas, tamales, enchiladas, stuffed chiles and fried tacos. Guests will enjoy music and traditional dances performed by elementary students along with short skits.

The fundraiser will start at 5:00 pm. The money will be used to improve the elementary school and the welfare of the kids who study there. The whole town is invited.

Este sábado 6 de diciembre, en la plaza de Sayulita, los padres de familia y maestros de la Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona, llevaran a cabo una Fiesta Mexicana, en la cual ofrecerán al público comida tradicional mexicana, tal como tostadas, tamales, enchiladas, chiles rellenos y tacos dorados. Habrá música, bailes tradicionales por los estudiantes de la primaria y obras de teatro.
Esta fiesta empieza a las 5:00 pm en punto. El dinero recaudado será destinado a mejorar la infraestructura de la primaria, para el bienestar de todos los niños que asisten a esta escuela pública de la localidad. Todo el pueblo esta invitado a participar en esta noble causa. Primaria Damián Carmona, les deseamos que este evento tenga gran éxito!

Fledgling Animal Welfare Organization Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign

Sayulitanimals, an animal welfare group dedicated to the health and well-being of local animals and residents, recently announced the kick-off of their first fund-raising drive: the 200/50 campaign. The campaign's goal is to raise $10,000 US dollars to start the town's first community clinic for cats and dogs by asking 200 individuals to donate $50 each. This marks the start of an on-going fundraising process.

The group was started in December of 2007 by local residents, Sara Briner, Tamara Edwards and Upi Viteri, in response to the over-population problem and lack of resources and information for owned and stray animals which often lead to preventable suffering such as disease, injury and abuse. They also realized that in addressing these problems they were also helping the community by lowering the transmission of disease, public contamination, damage to natural habitats and dog bites and fights.

Sayulitanimals hopes "this fund-raising effort will generate more awareness of the group and our need for regular donations", says Co-founder Tamara Edwards. "We welcome any amount whether it is smaller than $50 dollars or much larger. Our goal is to not only start the clinic but to be able to provide on-going programs such as weekly free spay/neuter and medical aid for street animals. We believe this will be a huge benefit to the animals and residents of Sayulita alike".

Sayulita México Diciembre 3, 2008- Sayulitanimals, una organización no lucrativa dedicada al bienestar de los animales locales y sus residentes acaba de anunciar el inicio de su campaña de recaudación de fondas llamada; el club de los 200/50. La meta de la campana es reunir $10000 dólares americanos para iniciar la primera clínica comunitaria del pueblo para los gatos y perros. Esta consiste en obtener 200 personas para donar $50 dólares cada una. Este será el principio de un proceso paulatino y constante de recaudación de fondos.

La organización empezó en diciembre de 2007 por residentes locales, Sara Briner, Tamara Edwards y Upi Viteri con motivo a combatir el problema de la sobrepoblación
y los pocos recursos e información para el bienestar de los animales con y sin hogar que seguido suelen enfrentar distintas problemáticas como: enfermedades, heridas y abusos.
Ellas se dieron cuenta que al afrontar esta problemática de hecho estaban ayudando también a la comunidad ,bajando los niveles de transmisión de enfermedades, contaminación publica, danos a hábitat naturales, disminución de ataques de perros a humanos y peleas de perros.

Sayulitanimals, esta en proceso de obtener su licencia de organización no lucrativa con beneficios para los donadores tanto como en México como en los Estados Unidos, espera que este esfuerzo de recaudación de fondos genere mas conciencia por la necesidad de donaciones regulares para la clínica.

"Le damos la bienvenida a cualquier tipo de donación sin importar si es menor a los $50 dólares o mucho mayor a esta". Nuestra meta es no solo comenzar esta clínica sino tener la oportunidad de mantenerla con servicios médicos y de esterilización gratuita la comunidad a sus mascotas con hogar y sin hogar.

Sayulita Celebrates New
Municipal President

On the evening of Monday December the 1st, Sayulita celebrated the inauguration of the new Municipal president, Hector Miguel Paniagua Salazar, a public accountant who will serve a 3-year term as the Municipal president for the Bahia de Banderas. Rodrigo Peña, who was the last Municipal president, will now go on to be the head of town hall council.

The celebrations for the change of Municipal president included a live band in the town plaza, tables and chairs set up all around the plaza, plus free drinks and barbecued meat accompanied with rice and beans were served to anybody and everybody who showed up on Monday night to join in the festivities.

There will also be elections coming up for a new town delegate. Jesus "Piolin" Rodriguez, who has voluntarily served as Sayulita's sheriff/judge for the past three years, will be leaving the position and the town will vote on December 21st for a new delegate to take on the responsibilities.

El lunes, el primer de diciembre, Sayulita celebró la inauguración del nuevo presidente municipal, el contador publico, Héctor Miguel Paniagua Salazar, quien será el presidente municipal para la Bahía de Banderas durante el plazo de 3 anos. Rodrigo Peña, quien era el último presidente municipal ahora será el regidor de ayuntamiento. Las celebraciones para el cambio de presidente municipal incluían una banda tocando en la plaza, mesas montadas por toda la plaza y servían bebidas y carne asada con arroz y frijoles a todos que llegaban el lunes en la noche para participar en la celebración.
También habrá elecciones pronto para un nuevo delegado. Piolín quien ha sido el delegado del pueblo durante 3 anos dejara su posición y el pueblo votara para un nuevo delegado el 21 de diciembre para asumir la responsabilidad.

2. Birthdate/age: I am 71 years old. I was born November 01, 1937.
2. Año de nacimiento/Edad Tengo 71 años de edad, naci el 1º de noviembre de 1937.

3. Born in Sayulita? I was born in Las Bancas, next to San Pancho. I lived with my father Concepcion Virgen and my mother Hermina Santos for eleven months and then my grandmother brought me to Sayulita in 1938 to live with my grandparents. I have been living here ever since.
3. Nació en Sayulita? Yo nací en Las Bancas, en seguida de San Pancho. Viví con mi padre Concepción Virgen y mi madre Hermina Santos por once meses, y entonces my abuela me trajo a Sayulita a vivir con mis abuelos. He vivido aquí desde entonces.

4. Education level: When I was a kid, the school here was placed where the gazebo at the plaza is now. The town officials also used to use it as a meeting place. Then the officials moved the school to the location where the ejido building is now, so we had a bigger place to study and play. The actual classroom was where the Casa de la Cultura is now located. We had teachers who came from Tepic and Compostela. I remember my first teacher: Ignacio Regalado, and some other teachers who worked here: Elena Rocha, David, Magdaleno... I only studied until the 6th grade because that was the last grade we could study here in Sayulita. I studied that same grade (sixth) until I was 15 years old because I wanted to be at school as much as I could. I didn't have the chance to study secondary even though I liked to study. I read a lot so every time I had the chance to learn something new I could take advantage of that opportunity.
4. Nivel de educación: cuando era un niño la escuela aquí estaba donde esta ahorita el quiosco en la plaza, los ejidatarios lo usaban como lugar de reuniones, entonces los ejidatarios nos cambiaron a la manzana donde esta ahora la oficina del ejido, entonces teníamos un lugar mas grande para estudiar y jugar, el salón estaba donde esta la Casa de la Cultura ahorita. Teníamos maestros que venían de Tepic y de Compostela. Yo recuerdo a mi primer maestro: Ignacio Regalado y algunos otros maestros que trabajaron aquí: Elena Rocha, David, Magdaleno... yo estudie hasta el 6º grado de primaria porque ese era el ultimo grado que podíamos estudiar aquí, estuve en 6º grado hasta los 15 porque yo quería estar en la escuela tanto como pudiera. No tuve la oportunidad de estudiar la secundaria aunque me gusta mucho estudiar y leer así que cada vez que tengo chanza de aprender algo nuevo pues la tomo!

5. Family history & information? I live with my wife Juana. We met when I lived in La Higuera Blanca, when I was 19 years old. After 12 years together we broke up and then 30 years later we decided to live together and get married. We have two kids together: Gloria and Angel, and I have four more kids: Yolanda, Santos, Osiel and Clemente. Juana also has two more children: Susana and Carlos. Both Juana and I consider ALL of them to be OUR kids. We have 16 grandchildren together.
5. Vive con su familia? Cuántos son? Vivo con mi esposa Juana, nos conocimos cuando yo vivía en la Higuera Blanca, yo tenia 19 años, después de 12 años nos separamos y 30 años después decidimos vivir juntos y casarnos. Tenemos dos hijos juntos: Gloria y Ángel; yo tengo cuatro hijos mas: Yolanda, Santos, Osiel, y Clemente; ella tiene dos mas: Susana y Carlos, pero para nosotros, todos son nuestros PROPIOS hijos. Tenemos 16 nietos juntos.

6. Employment/business history. I started working when I was a little kid. My grandpa taught me to take care of the cows and horses that way I could help him. Then a person from Guadalajara came and gave me the chance to work managing a cuadrilla (crew) of people who picked up "coquito de aceite" (small "oil" coconuts) here in Sayulita. I then came to Higuera Blanca to open my own business selling coconut oil. I met my wife Juana at that time. After which, we moved to San Pancho and opened a small store where we worked together for 6 years. When we broke up, I came back to Sayulita and opened a another grocery store. It was the biggest in Sayulita and I sold everything: vegetables, milk, cement, wood, I mean everything! I succeeded with that store but I felt something was missing and then I realized I needed a wife. After years of looking for my perfect match, I decided to try again with Juana. Our children agreed to our marriage and she came to live with me. We worked at the store for several years until we got tired of the store and so we decided to come to live here (across from the Sayulita Gym). We like business so we opened a little "refaccionaria" (auto parts store). We like it because we open it every day but also have time to do what we like - being together. I also have commercial shops for rent, as well as houses and bungalows. I have a place for parties here called "Casino Las Gardenias"
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: yo empecé a trabajar cuando era un niñito. My abuelo me enseño a cuidar de las vacas y loca caballos para que lo pudiera ayudar. Entonces una persona de Guadalajara vino y me dio la oportunidad de manejar una cuadrilla de gente que recogía coquito de aceite aquí en Sayulita, entonces me fui a la Higuera Blanca a abrir mi propio negocio de coquito de aceite. Conocí a mi esposa Juana en ese tiempo. Después de 6 añoso nos fuimos a San Pancho a abrir una tienda, trabajamos juntos por 6 añoso allí. Cuando nos separamos me regrese a Sayulita y abrí una tienda de abarrotes. Era las mas grande de Sayulita, vendía de todo: verduras, leche, cemento, madrea, todo! Me fue muy bien con la tienda esa pero yo me sentía que me faltaba algo y pues me di cuenta que me faltaba una esposa, después de varios añoso de buscar una compañera decidí tratar otra vez con Juana; nuestros hijos aceptaron nuestro matrimonio y ella se vino a vivir conmigo. Trabajamos juntos en la tienda por muchos añoso hasta que nos cansamos de ella así que decidimos venirnos a vivir aquí (frente al gimnasio). Nos gusta el negocio así que abrimos una pequeña refaccionaria. Nos gusta porque la abrimos todos los días y tenemos tiempo de hacer lo que nos gusta, estar juntos. También tengo locales de renta, así como casas y bungalos. Tengo un local para fiestas: Casino Las Gardenias.

7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? I think the biggest change Sayulita has had was in 1977 when the Fideicomiso Bahia de Banderas decided to aquire 500 hectares of land here in the ejido. The government constructed houses for all the people who already owned land in the town. They came with three different models of houses and everybody had the chance to choose a type. Then the government's architects constructed the houses and Sayulita became a better town; tourists started to come and invest and economy started to grow.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? Creo que el cambio más grande que ha tenido Sayulita fue en 1977 cuando el Fideicomiso Bahía de Banderas decidió expropiar 500 hectáreas de la tierra del ejido. El gobierno construyo casas para toda la gente que ya tenía su lote en el pueblo. Venían con tres modelos diferentes de casas, todos tuvimos la oportunidad de elegir una de ellas y luego los arquitectos del gobierno construían las casas, desde entonces Sayulita se convirtió en un mejor pueblo, los turistas empezaron a venir y a invertir, y la economía comenzó a crecer.

8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. The natural resources are being used up. I remember when I was young, we used to go to the beach and right at the mouth of the river where the bunch of rocks are located, we picked up oysters with our own hands. Lobsters and crabs were very easy to catch as well. We had so much fish all year long for everybody. We used to go hunting in the jungle and we caught wild pigs and many different kinds of birds. All those wild animals barely exist today. We are losing our natural resources due to hunting, deforestation, and all the development. It is a shame.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita. Los recursos naturales están acabándose; recuerdo cuando era joven solíamos ir a la playa, y justo donde esta la desembocadura del rio donde está el montón de piedras recogíamos ostiones con muestras manos en esas piedras, era bien fácil agarrar langostas y cangrejos. Había mucho pescado para todos todo el añoso. Íbamos a cazar a la selva y agarrábamos jabalíes, muchos pájaros diferentes. Todos esos animales ya casi no existen en esta época. Estamos perdiendo nuestros recursos naturales debido a la caza, la deforestación y todos estos edificios, es una pena.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? I think Sayulita is going to be a better town. People are becoming conscious about life. They are interested in this town and its goodness. I think the quality of life is going to be even better than now.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Yo creo que Sayulita va a ser un mejor pueblo, la gente esta concientizándose a cerca de la vida; están mas interesados en este pueblo y en su bienestar. Creo que la calidad de vida va a ser mejor que ahora.

10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? I want to ask people to take good care of Sayulita. We need to be organized, and we have to do the right things in the right way. All the good things we do are going to be for our kids.
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Quiero pedirle a la gente que cuiden bien a Sayulita, necesitamos organizarnos y hacer las cosas correctas de la manera correcta. Todas las cosas que hacemos van a ser para nuestros hijos.

He has so many stories about the people and the town! I have so much fun listening to him that I didn't feel the time going by. I bet you are going to enjoy his stories, too.
