Greetings 3,993 online Sayulero readers,

Perfect skies, perfect sun, and perfect beaches all make for absolutely perfect days here in Sayulita.  This has definitely been one of the warmest Decembers/Januarys that I can ever remember.  I trust all of you are enjoying it too (or are about to soon!)

In an effort to help keep Sayulita even cleaner, one of our stories this week is about trash in Sayulita.  Try to share the following information with as many people as you know.  If you own a vacation rental house, its your responsibility to make sure your staff is not leaving the garbage on the street until the next day.  Thanks to everyone for working together to keep Sayulita beautiful.

See trash in the street?  There's no harm in picking it up and putting it into the closest trashcan.

Hope you enjoy the articles below,

Help Keep Garbage off Sayulita Streets

As high season is in full swing, and more people are visiting Sayulita and our beaches, more garbage has been accumulating as well.  Both the municipal garbage collection and the Sayulimpia garbage collection are extra busy this time of year helping to keep Sayulita clean.  Girrsa is the name of the garbage pick up group working in all of Bahia de Banderas. Girrsa works with smaller private groups in the area such as "Amigos por San Pancho", "Amigos por Bucerias", and here in Sayulita, "Sayulimpia". The smaller Sayulimpia garbage truck purchased with money raised from the town and from private groups like Grupo Pro Sayulita, can now go down narrow streets and reach other parts of town where the municipal garbage truck can't go.

The public garbage collection service reports that in 2008, approximately 270 tons of garbage was produced daily in the Banderas Bay area. The final destination of all of this waste is the landfill site located on the old road to Valle, 2km from Bucerias.

Everyone can help keep Sayulita clean by ensuring all garbage gets thrown in trash cans around town, cleaning up your area after a day at the beach and putting your garbage out for pick up onMonday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Leaving trash out on the streets on other days of the week encourages dogs and other animals to get in and tear it apart making a more difficult job for the garbage pick-up workers who are putting in an extra effort during this very busy tourist season.

Construction Begins at Grammar School
By Gina Portillo
On Monday January 5th, work began on the new classroom at Damian Carmona, Sayulita's grammar school. Under the direction of Architect Luis Diaz Camarena, the new classroom is a much needed addition to the school. Damian Carmona has grown to over 370 students. Overcrowding is one of the most serious problems affecting the schools in our area. A few classrooms have over 40 students.

Initially the plan was to repair two temporary classrooms, but Architect Luis Diaz concluded that it would be more expensive to tear down these classrooms than to build new ones. In November, the community participated in a fund raiser which raised enough money for this important project. Many volunteer hours were spent on the planning of this event which exceeded all expectations. To date, approximately $300,000 pesos have been raised. Thanks to the McCormick family, money is still coming in through The Spirit of Recovery Foundation and their website healingthosewhoserve.com. We thank Architect Diaz for the enormous donation of his time and work, to Cap Sparling and Grupo Pro Sayulita, the parents and to the hundreds of others who gave so generously so that these children can have the education they deserve.

It is estimated that the work will be concluded in approximately one month.

Well, I passed one the torch and now I am helping my friend Ilse at Primavera Rentals. I am also helping my husband Oscar with his personal chef business; and of course I am being a mom.
