As rental homes start to fill up with guests, our street corners start to fill up with trash. So please educate yourselves (and your staff) on what MORNING the trash is picked on your street. Placing the trash in the street in the afternoon or after the garbage truck has passed simply gives the dogs about 20 hours to scatter debris around your neighborhood. Please do your part and help keep Sayulita beautiful. See you all around town,

Mientras las casas de renta se comienzan a ocupar, nuestras esquinas se comienzan a llenar de basura, asi que por favor eduquense a si mismos ( asi como sus parientes y amigos) en saber en quê MAÑANA pasa el camion de la basura. Porque si sacan la basura en la tarde o despues que el camion ha pasado, simplemente les da a los perros locales 20 hrs. para buscar comida entre las bolsas y las dejan tiradas en las esquinas. Asi que por favor ponga de su parte, para mantener a Sayulita limpia y hermosa

 Bubbles is a smaller dog who was given her name by a six year old girl who instantly recognized this sweet dog's happy, effervescent personality. Bubbles is a calm, submissive (in the best sense of the word) dog who wants to make her person smile. She walks beautifully off leash, following her person down the sidewalks and through town, although she would be just as happy on leash and right by your side. Bubbles enjoys running on the beach, she loves roughhousing with other dogs, and she gets along extremely well with children. Bubbles knows to sit for meals and treats and she is learning not to mouth or jump when she wants attention. With those big ears and cute little face, Bubbles is sure to look like an eternal puppy.  On Wednesday November 4, 2009 at approximately 5:30am the owner of Choco Banana, Tracy Willis, was opening her coffee shop when she noticed the HSBC ATM in the plaza located next to her business had been opened in the middle of the night by someone using a blowtorch. All of the money had been removed.
According to Tracy, the ATM had recently been filled with money only the day before and a local customer who was around the plaza about 1:30am stated that everything seemed normal. Thus, Tracy puts the time of the theft between 1:30am and 5:00am. After contacting the police who responded immediately, she contacted HSBC to report the incident.
 The police on the scene were dusting for fingerprints and figure the perpetrator had been watching the ATM for quite awhile and committed the actual crime in very little time. Without any cameras or security, it makes the job of finding the culprit or culprits very difficult.
Tracy said she will contact HSBC about the possibility of installing a camera or some other form of security to prevent another such incident, but state she does not feel the need to install one for her business.
Cajero automático robado en Sayulita
En MIERCOLES 4 de noviembre 2009 aproximadamente a las 5:30 am el propietario de Choco Banana, Tracy Willis, venía a abrir su tienda de café, cuando vio algo extraño. Tracy tras una investigación descubrió que el cajero automático de HSBC en la plaza situada junto a su negocio se había abierto en el medio de la noche por alguien usando un soplete y todo el dinero tomado.
Según Tracy la ATM ha sido recientemente llena de dinero sólo el día antes y en hablar con un cliente que estaba alrededor de la plaza alrededor de la 1:30 am todo parecía normal. Ella pone el momento del robo 1:30-5:00. Después de ponerse en contacto con la policía, que respondió de inmediato, Tracy contacto con HSBC para reportar el incidente.
La policía en la escena eran polvo para las huellas dactilares y la figura que todo el que lo hizo había estado observando la ATM durante bastante rato, y entraban y salían en poco tiempo.  The change in the season has me thinking about how I can keep my family healthy and well. Fall and Winter bring cooler weather, busier lives with increased stress, and more people to interact with everyday - making everyone more vulnerable to colds and the flu. Then there's the lingering threat of dengue fever, which (ojalla!) should be fading soon along with the mosquitoes.
The fight against dengue starts with clearing standing water in and around our homes and businesses. Other tactics include increasing your vitamin B1 intake, through supplements and foods like sunflower seeds, fresh tuna, and eggs. Natural repellents like citronella, lemongrass, and eucalyptus are a great defense for the whole family, and burning incense and citronella also helps to keep mosquitoes at bay.
 Our best defense against illness is a strong immune system. Exercise and a healthy diet boost our disease-fighting power. Make time to get out as a family, with a nature-walk through the jungle, or a family surf lesson or yoga class. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, like vitamin-rich papaya, avocado, and spinach; avoid refined sugars which weaken the immune system (order your Margaritas "sin jarabe" to reduce sugar along with the chance of hangover!). Bee pollen is a great immunity booster, sold by Sayulita's roaming honey vendor.
Our family is prepping for flu season with acupuncture wellness tune-ups (great for children and adults!), daily exercise, and a balanced diet, including plenty of breast milk for Maximo, which is the best immune defense for infants (and is recommended by the WHO for the first 2 years of life!). We are also washing our hands a LOT, which is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infection.
This week, my Fall Favorites are: a perfect Sunday at playa La Lancha; Pilates & Power Ropes back at the Palapa; and pears with tahini & honey - yum!

 El cambio en la temporada me tiene pensando en cómo puedo mantener a mi familia de buena salud. Otoño e Invierno traer una clima más fresca, vidas más ocupadas con más estrés, y más gente con quien interactuamos cada día - hacer que todos sean más vulnerables a los resfriados y la gripe. Ademas, todavía está la amenaza de dengue, que (ojalla!) deberían estar desapareciendo proximamente, con los mosquitos.
La lucha contra el dengue se inicia con la eliminación del agua estancada en nuestras casas y negocios. Otras tácticas incluyen el aumento de vitamina B1, con suplementos y alimentos como las semillas de girasol, atún fresco, y huevos. Repelentes naturales como citronela, hierba de limón, y eucalipto son una buen defensa para toda la familia, y la quema de incienso y citronela también ayuda a prevenir los mosquitos.
Nuestra mejor defensa contra la enfermedad es una sistema inmune fuerte. El ejercicio y una dieta saludable aumentar nuestra potencia de lucha contra la enfermedad. Tómese un tiempo para salir con su familia, por un paseo de naturaleza por la selva, o una lección de surf o clase de yoga familiar. Come muchas frutas y verduras, como papaya, aguacate y espinaca que son densos en nutrients. Education history. I studied Kindergarten, elementary, secondary, high school and university in Tepic, always in public schools. My parents care a lot about education they always told us (my sibling and me) education was their legacy since they don't have properties to give us. They also say education is something that is ours nobody can take it away.
Historia educativa. Estudie el jardín de niños, primaria, secundaria, preparatoria y Universidad en Tepic, siempre en escuelas publicas. A mis padres les importa mucho la educación y ellos siempre nos dijeron (a mis hermanos y a mi) que la educación era su legado puesto que ellos no tienen propiedades que darnos. También dicen que la educación es algo que nadie nos va a quitar nunca.
Work history. I started working as a teacher 16 years ago in 1993. I was very young. Most of my students were 3 or 4 years younger than me so we became very good friends. I started working in a little school with just 64 students in a town called Francisco I. Madero, north of Tepic. I worked there for several years I don't even remember how many. I taught Spanish, Chemistry, Biology, Mexican History, Universal History, Ethics, for a few weeks, I even taught Math because we didn't have a Math teacher. I loved that little tiny school. The only subject I didn't teach was PE and I don't plan teaching it! After that I got the opportunity to work in a big secondary school in Guaymas, Sonora. That school had about 1500 students, a huge difference. I taught Spanish to 120 students in three different classes. That made me grow up as a teacher because the classes where 60 students each and my previous experience was with 15-20 students groups.
After a few months I came back to Nayarit and I started teaching in a private high school where I taught History, World and Latin Literature, Biology, Math, and English. I really enjoyed it but I realized I liked teaching secondary school better. I worked there for about 2 years and an old teacher sent me with a note to a private Secondary School in Tepic. I wasn't sure I wanted to work there but they offered me a good salary, insurance, and I was teaching just Spanish. There is a difference between teaching in a public and a private school. When I was teaching for the firs time I had to buy all my material and books, in this school they gave me ALL what I needed, pens, paper, markers, everything. After just a few weeks I had the chance to take a test to become a federal teacher, I took it and I got the first place. We were about 60 teachers "fighting" for one position and I got it! When I saw the score I started crying because I thought I wouldn't make it.
I signed a contract with SEP and they sent me here to Sayulita nine years ago. Since then I have been here and I have taught some Spanish, English, Computers, Ethics, World and Mexican History, etc. I like teaching here; I love my students even though they say I am too strict. I guess I am but I don't ask them for results I know they cannot achieve. They all are very smart!
 Historia de trabajo. Empecé a trabajar como maestra hace 16 años en 1993. Era muy joven. La mayoría de mis estudiantes eran 3 o 4 años más jóvenes que yo así que nos hicimos muy buenos amigos. Comencé trabajando en una escuelita con 64 estudiantes en un pueblo llamado Francisco I. Madero, al norte de Tepic. Enseñé español, química, biología, historia de México, historia universal, ética, y por unas semanas enseñé matemáticas porque no teníamos maestro. Me encantaba esa escuelita! La única materia que no he enseñado es Educación Física y no estoy planeando hacerlo!
Después tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en una secundaria grande en Guaymas, Sonora. Esa escuela tenía como 1500 estudiantes, gran diferencia. Allí enseñé español a 120 estudiantes en tres clases diferentes. Eso me hizo crecer como maestro porque las clases eran de 60 alumnos y mi experiencia previa era con 15-20 estudiantes. Después de unos meses regrese a Nayarit y comencé a trabajar en una preparatoria privada donde enseñé Historia, Literatura Universal y latina, biología, matemáticas e Ingles. Realmente le disfrute pero ahí me di cuenta de que disfrutaba mas trabajar en secundaria. Trabaje allí por dos años y un antiguo maestro me mando con una nota a una secundaria privada aquí en Tepic. Yo no estaba segura si quería trabajar allí pero me ofrecieron un buen salario, seguro, y yo iba a enseña solo español. Hay una diferencia entre trabajar en una escuela pública y una privada.
Cuando estaba trabajando por primera vez tuve que comprar todo mi material y mis libros, en esta otra escuela me dieron TODO lo que necesitaba, plumas, papel, marcadores, todo. Después de unas semanas tuve la oportunidad de hacer un examen para convertirme en maestra federal, lo hice y obtuve la puntuación más alta. Éramos alrededor de 60 maestros "luchando" por una posición y yo la obtuve! Cuando vi la puntuación comencé a llorar porque pensé que no la haría. Firme el contrato con SEP y me enviaron aquí hace nueve años. Desde entonces he estado aquí y he enseñado lo mismo español, Ingles, Computadoras, ética, Historia de México y Universal, etc. Me gusta enseñar aquí; quiero mucho a mis estudiantes aunque ellos digan que soy muy estricta. Supongo que lo soy pero no les pido mas de lo que yo se que pueden dar. Todos ellos son muy listos!
What made you want to become a teacher? Since I was a little girl I used to play with my friends and sisters that I was the teacher. I was the teacher all the time even though I didn't attend kindergarten yet. I guess the fact that my parents used to read stories to us or taught us the alphabet when we were still toddler or to write our own names even before going to school that made me want to teach other people. I think I became a secondary school teacher because that was my best age. I had so much fun when I was an 8th and 9th grader that marked me.
I have a major in Latin Language and Literature thanks to my Spanish teacher Alfonso Trejo who was the best Spanish teacher I have had. I came to Sayulita to teach Spanish but the school needed an English and Computer teacher and I became that teacher. I studied computers for eight semesters at the Instituto Tecnológico de Tepic. I know computers well and I have always liked English; my dad and my sister Claudia and I used to sing The Beatles songs all the time out loud, we also sang Bee Gees, Air Supply, Creedence, Doors, and every once in a while Kiss. My dad likes those groups a lot so we started liking English at a very young age.
After working for 5 years in Sayulita I had the chance to get a Fulbright Scholarship for a Teacher Exchange. Before the exchange Fulbright sent me to South Carolina to improve my English skills. I studied in EPI at USC for two terms (9 weeks) then I came back to Mexico for a few weeks. In July 2005 I was sent to Salt Lake City to teach Spanish at Bryant Middle School. It was the best experience in my whole life. I still miss my students and all the staff including the Principal Mrs. Battle a wonderful, wise woman.
 Que te hizo convertirte en maestro?Desde que era una pequeñita solía jugar a la maestra con mis amigas y mis hermanas a que yo era maestra. Yo siempre era la maestra aun cuando todavía no asistía al jardín de niños. Supongo que el hecho de que mis padres nos leyeran historias o nos enseñaran el alfabeto o a escribir nuestros nombres aun antes de ir a la escuela hizo que quisiera ensenar a otras personas. Creo que me convertí en maestra de secundaria porque esa fue mi mejor época. Me divertí tanto cuando estaba en 2º y 3º de secundaria que eso me marco. Estudie Lengua y Literatura Latina gracias a mi maestro de Español, Alfonso Trejo que fue el mejor maestro de Español que he tenido. Vine a Sayulita a ensenar Español pero la escuela necesitaba una maestra de Ingles y Computación y yo me convertí en esa maestra.
Estudie computación por 8 semestres en el Instituto Tecnológico de Tepic así que conozco de computadoras y siempre me ha gustado el Ingles, mi padre, mi hermana Claudia y yo solíamos cantar las canciones de Los Beatles todo el tiempo, a todo pulmón, también cantábamos a los Bee Gees, Air Supply, Creedence, Doors y alguna que otra vez a Kiss. A mi padre le gustan mucho estos grupos así que a nosotros nos empezó a gustar el Ingles a una muy temprana edad. Después de trabajar por 5 años en Sayulita tuve la oportunidad de obtener una beca Fulbright para Intercambio de Maestros. Antes del intercambio Fulbright me mando a Carolina del Sur a mejorar mi Ingles. Estudie en EPI en la Universidad de Carolina del Sur por dos periodos (9 semanas) y luego regrese a México por unas semanas. En julio de 2005 me mandaron a Salt Lake City a ensenar español en Bryant Middle School.
Fue la mejor experiencia que he tenido en mi vida. Todavía extraño a mis alumnos y a todo el staff incluyendo a la directora, la Sra. Battle una maravillosa y sabia mujer.
What do you feel would make Sayulita a better place to learn? Schools in Sayulita need a bunch of help. We lack of many basic stuff like libraries, internet, computers at the elementary, space at the kindergarten, I think if we had all this services Sayulita would become a better place to learn.
Que crees que haría de Sayulita un mejor lugar para aprender? Las escuelas en Sayulita necesitan mucha ayuda. Carecemos de cosas básicas como bibliotecas, Internet, computadoras en la escuela primaria, espacio en el jardín de niños, creo que si tuviéramos todos estos servicios Sayulita seria un mejor lugar para aprender.
What do you like the best about being a teacher? I like to see how my students change their minds with the time. When they just come here most of them don't know how to really use a computer, then after three years here most of them are capable to use the computer without almost any problems. With English it is different, many of my students unfortunately don't like it or think it is too hard to learn. I like to see their faces when they understand something new or when they understand a song or a little text. That's what I like about teaching, watching them learning even though they don't realize they are learning.
Que es lo que más te gusta de ser maestra? Me gusta ver como mis alumnos van cambiando sus mentes con el tiempo. Cuando recién llegan aquí muchos de ellos no saben como manejar una computadora, entonces después de tres años la mayoría de ellos son capaces de usar una computadora casi sin ningún problema. Con Ingles es diferente. Muchos de mis estudiantes no les gusta el Ingles o creen que es muy difícil de aprender. Me gusta ver sus caras cuando entienden algo nuevo o cuando entienden una canción o un pequeño texto. Eso es lo que me gusta de ser maestra, verlos aprender aun que a veces ellos ni se dan cuenta de que están aprendiendo.
Would you change anything in Sayulita? I think I would not change but add some more services like a little hospital, a little market where you can go and get what you need all at once instead of the stores having all those boxes with veggies at the sidewalk where you cannot walk, obviously, a little park for kids to play and a parking lot. I think there is something I would change: rental prices! They are so high for people like me and my colleagues. Rentals are very expensive here that sometimes we have to live in little tiny rooms where you barely can walk because we cannot afford something better. Making a comparison, a house with two levels, two baths, three bedrooms, kitchen, all services, right next to the commercial zone in Tepic is worths $2,000.00 pesos a month, in Sayulita a single room with a little bathroom maybe with a kitchen we have to pay 2,500-3,000 pesos, and that's away from downtown! Just remember it is not the same working and living here than visiting here.
Cambiarias algo en Sayulita? Creo que no cambiaria sino que añadiría mas servicios como un pequeño hospital, un pequeño mercado donde puedas comprar todo lo que necesitas en un solo lugar, en lugar de las tiendas que tienen todas esas cajas con vegetales en las aceras donde por supuesto no puedes caminar, también un parquecito para que los niños jueguen y un estacionamiento. Hay algo que creo que si cambiaria: los precios de las rentas! Son tan altos para gente como yo y mis colegas. Las rentas son tan caras que algunas veces tenemos que vivir en pequeñas habitaciones en las que apenas podemos caminar porque no podemos pagar algo mejor. Haciendo una comparación una casa de dos niveles, dos baños, tres recamaras, cocina, todos los servicios, justo a un lado de la zona comercial de Tepic, vale $2,000.00 pesos al mes, en Sayulita, una habitación sencilla con un pequeño baño y tal vez una cocinita, tenemos que pagar 2,500-3,000 pesos, y eso es lejos del centro del pueblo! Solo recuerden que no es lo mismo trabajar y vivir aquí, que venir a vacacionar.
 How do you feel about public vs. private education? I think it's good having a private school in Sayulita. I know some of the people who work there and I can tell I really like them, they are great people. What I would like is having a link between both of us. I know they have very good ideas about improving the town and education. Something I have noticed about public education is that our syllabus is very tight and we have to follow it. We don't have that much time to do different things but being at the classroom or lab and every once in a while taking the kids out only if we have a special permit of course!
Como te sientes con respecto a la educación publica vs. la privada? Creo que es bueno tener la escuela privada en Sayulita. Conozco algunas de las personas que trabajan allí y realmente puedo decir que son grandes personas. Lo que me gustaría tener es comunicación entre ambas. Creo que ellos tienen muy buenas ideas a cerca de mejorar el pueblo y la educación. Algo que he notado en la educación pública es que nuestro programa es muy apretado y tenemos que seguirlo al pie de la letra. Nosotros no tenemos mucho tiempo para hacer cosas diferentes que estar en el salón enseñando o en el laboratorio, y allá de vez en cuando, llevar a los chicos a otro lugar, claro, con su respectivo permiso especial!
What can you say to someone who wants to volunteer while on vacation? I would say make contact with the school you want to volunteer at or anybody else who can help you with this before arriving to Sayulita. Cheryl Vaughn has a beautiful program at the elementary school. Cheryl and her volunteers are teaching English after school so that's a great option. You can contact her through Grupo Pro Sayulita. Le diría que se pusiera en contacto con la escuela en la que quiere hacer trabajo voluntario o con cualquier otra persona que le pueda ayudar con esto, antes de llegar a Sayulita.
