Curt Barter grew up in a small town outside of Toronto called Milton, Ontario. Three years ago, he planned on visiting Sayulita with a friend for a week, which ended up turning into three months! He fell in love with the vibe and surrounding beauty of this small surf town, and has been returning every winter ever since for six months at a time. For the past year, he has really focused on his business, Curt Barter Photography, capturing amazing images of Sayulita.

How did your passion for photography develop?

Ever since a young age, I had a passion for photography and videography. I grew up as a shy kid, so it was a way to express myself creatively without words.

How would you describe your photography style?

My photography style tends to be mostly Landscape. I love being able to merge aerial and landscape photography together, creating a unique symphony of images unseen by most people. My style is moody and tropical. Any excuse to photograph the beautiful coastline surrounding Sayulita is a good one.

You are both a drone aerial photographer and a still photographer. What are the benefits of both types of photography in capturing images?

Ever since I discovered drones, my passion for photography has two-folded. A dream of mine since I was a child has always been the ability to fly and see the world from above. Now, with the ever-advancing technology of drones, my dream has become reality. Having the still-photography background has allowed me to compose breath-taking images from a whole new perspective in the sky.

For what type of events is Curt Barter Photography available for hire?

The services I offer are: Aerial Photography, Aerial Videography, Video Editing, and Photo Editing. As far as events go, I’m open to any and every idea! Weddings, Special Events, Bikini Shoots, Surfing, Portraits, etc. Send me a message via my Sayulita Life ad page, Curt Barter Photography, and let’s shoot!

Will you describe your favorite drone shot of Sayulita that you’ve captured? What about it makes it your favorite?

My favorite image I’ve captured thus far is the controlled chaos of the Sayulita Fair. As I stood on my balcony listening to the screams of joy coming from the children on rides one afternoon, I had to get a better look. I took off with my Phantom 3 Drone just before sunset, and the view through my screen blew me away! The colors popped so well, and it was a perspective no one had ever witnessed prior to that day. The image performed exceptionally well on Facebook accumulating over 100 shares as well as over 1k likes! It has really opened a lot of doors for me.

What do you like most about being a photographer in Sayulita?

Other than the amazing nature, beautiful coastline, and pristine beaches, it would have to be the people! Never in my life have I met a more enthusiastic, creative, soulful, and passionate community than the people of Sayulita! Everyone has been sincerely supportive of my work and they help motivate me to continue producing amazing content. I’m thankful for them everyday :).

What sets Curt Barter Photography apart from other photographers in the Sayulita area?

I have nothing but kind words to say about the other photographers in Sayulita. Two of my favorite Photographers are Spencer Harris and Nik West. Their photography of the surfers in the water is absolutely stunning. If you haven’t yet, definitely check out their work! As far as separating myself from the crowd, it’s my ability to capture stunning shots from above and my artistic eye when it comes to post-processing in Adobe Lightroom.

Anything else you’d like to add?

My photography is available exclusively at the Palu Gallery next to the Kiosko near the beach.
