3. Born in Sayulita? Actually no. My family is from here but, I was born in Chacalilla, Nayarit which isvery near San Blas. My mother died when I was a child and my father moved around a lot with me and my two sisters. When he/we finally arrived to Sayulita (where he had family) we ended up just staying here. That was in 1962. I guess a lot of people stay put once they have found Sayulita.
3. Nació en Sayulita? En realidad no. Mi familia es de aquí, pero yo nací en Chacalilla, Nayarit que esta muy cerca de San Balas. Mi madre murió cuando yo era un niño y mi padre se mudaba constantemente conmigo y mis dos hermanas. Cuando finalmente llegamos a Sayulita (donde el tenia familia) terminamos quedándonos aquí. Eso fue en 1962. Supongo que mucha gente se queda una vez que han encontrado a Sayulita.
4. Education level: I graduated from the 3rd grade. It was really hard to get an education with my father always wanting to move and live in different places. I try to study English now and practice it with my clients. The Sparling family initially paid for 25 English classes for me. I try to get my business partners to study English as well but they say it is too hard. Maybe they are just too lazy?
4. Nivel de educación: Me gradué del 3er grado. Era muy difícil obtener educación con mi padre siempre queriendo mudarse y vivir indiferentes lugares. Ahora trato de estudiar Ingles y practicarlo con mis clientes. La familia Sparling pagó inicialmente 25 clases de Ingles para mí. Trato de que mis socios estudien Ingles también pero ellos dicen que es muy difícil. A lo mejor son flojos.
5. Family history & information? I live with my wife Maria del Carmen Lozano Rodriguez and my children: Manuel Rodriguez 20, Mari José Ramos 13, and Ana Gabriella 9.
5. Vive con su familia? Cuántos son? Vivo con mi esposa Maria del Carmen Lozano Rodríguez y mis hijos: Manuel Rodríguez de 20, Marijose Ramos de 13 y Ana Gabriela de 9.
6. Employment/business history. At 12 years old, my first job was as a construction helper here in Sayulita. I did that for about 8 years and then at the age of 20, I started taking care of the gardens in houses owned by foreigners. After a while, I got a job driving for a taxi company in San Pancho. I then started my transportation business about 4 years ago. We now have 10 drivers/partners, nine suburbans and one large van.
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: A los 12 años, mi primer empleo fue como ayudante en la construcción aquí en Sayulita. Lo hice por 8 años y cuando tenía 20 empecé a cuidar los jardines de las casas de extranjeros. Después de un tiempo obtuve un trabajo como taxista para una compañía en San Pancho. Después empecé mi propio negocio de trasportes hace 4 años. Ahora tenemos 10 conductores/socios, nueve camionetas suburban y una camioneta van grande.
7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? The cleanliness of Sayulita! Years ago, this town was one big garbage dump. The creeks were full of garbage and after the first rains, the beach would be full of garbage. It is so much nicer now. The new garbage collection service is really great.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? La limpieza de Sayulita! Hace años este pueblo era un gran basurero. Los arroyos estaban llenos de basura y después de las primeras lluvias la playa estaba llena de basura. Ahora es mucho más bonito. El nuevo servicio de recolección de basura es muy bueno.
8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. Drugs. I see a lot of people using drugs in Sayulita. This is terrible. Some of them are as youg as 15 years old. I am sure they just start with marijuana, but this can lead to much worse drugs. I think many of the robberies here in town can be linked to drug use. I do not understand why anyone living in this beautiful place would want to use drugs.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita? Drogas. Veo mucha gente usando drogas en Sayulita. Esto es terrible. Algunas de ellas son jovenes de 15 años. Estoy seguro de que ellos empiezan con marihuana, pero esto puede llevar a drogas mucho peores. Creo que la mayoría de los robos aquí en el pueblo están ligados al uso de drogas. No entiendo como la gente que vive en este hermoso lugar puede usar drogas.
9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? Well, it will be a lot like it is now only bigger with more people living here, more jobs, and a lot busier. I am sure there will be more foreigners, more investment in the town and probably more condominiums as well. Sayulita might even be cleaner but it will never be as pretty as it is now. Maybe we will get a mini-super (super market) and possibly a bank. It would be great to never have to go to Puerto Vallarta at all.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Bueno, creo que será muy parecido al de ahora solo que mas grande con mas gente viviendo aquí, mas trabajos, y mucho mas ocupado. Estoy seguro que habrá mas extranjeros, mas inversión en el pueblo y probablemente también condominios. Sayulita puede ser hasta mas limpio pero nunca será tan bonito como es ahora. Tal vez tendremos un súper mercado y posiblemente un banco. Seria muy bueno no tener que ir a Puerto Vallarta para nada.
10 Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? Yes. We should work together to keep Sayulita as it is now and protect against large development. Sayulita is beautiful now because of the way it is. Large hotels and/or condos on the beachfront would change everything. Also, the areas around Sayulita are being sold to developers who are trying to privatize beaches and block access on roads we have been using for over 50 years. This is not right and perhaps the people of Sayulita could work together on a united front to send a message to the government.
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Si. Deberíamos de trabajar juntos para mantener a Sayulita como es ahora y protegerlo del desarrollo. Sayulita es hermoso ahora por como es. Hoteles grandes y/o condominios enfrente de la playa cambiarían todo. Además, las áreas alrededor de Sayulita están siendo vendidas a inmobiliarias que están tratando de privatizar las playas y bloquear el acceso a los caminos que hemos usado por alrededor de 50 años. Esto no es correcto, quizás la gente de Sayulita podría trabajar junta en un frente unido para mandar un mensaje al gobierno.
