Greetings 3,656 online Sayulero readers,

A five-day "puente" weekend started yesterday.  The town is filling up and the stores are stocking their refridgerators with beer.  Drive around the streets only if you have too and be careful where you park.  Don't give anyone a chance to run into your car.

Hope you enjoy,
SayulitaLife.com Webmaster

This week's El Sayulero

Thies Rohlfs (Sayulita Trailer Park)

Interviewer:  Ian Hodge

1. Name of interviewee: Thiese Rohlfs  Owner of Sayulita Trailer Park

1. Nombre del entrevistado: Thiese Rohlfs. Dueño de Sayulita Trailer Park

2.  Birthdate/age: I was born June 7, 1934.  I will be 74 in June.

3.  Born in Sayulita?  Well, I certainly was NOT born here.  Actually, I was born in Hamberg, Germany.  At the age of 20 I moved to Canada and in 1964 I moved to Mexico City.  I have been coming to the Sayulita area since the late 60's.

3. Nació en Sayulita?Bueno, pues obviamente yo NO nací aquí.

4.  Education level:   I graduated from high school.

5.  Family history & information?  Forty-three years ago, I married a sweet Mexican girl named Cristina from Tula de Hidalgo.  We are still happily married to this day.  We have three children that are all grown up now in their late 30's and early 40's.

6. Employment/business history.  For 22 years, I owned a machinery business in Mexico that sold to the automotive industry. Mostly engine block stuff.  I came to Sayulita in 1982 and bought the land that is now the south side of the trailer park.  Two years later I bought the land on the north side.  It was my intention from day one to start a nice trailer park for people to enjoy.  I wanted to have a house on the beach and a business here as well to earn a little money.  We now offer 40 camping/RV spaces and 24 rooms and bungalows.  Supposedly I am retired now but to me it seems like I am always working.

7.  One positive change you have seen in Sayulita?  I think some of the best changes have come most recently like the collection of garbage and the new sewer plant.  Cash machines are nice too!  What I really like however is that the municipality finally passed a law prohibiting camping on the beach.  It keeps Sayulita's beaches looking so much more beautiful.

8.  One negative change you have seen in Sayulita.  I think that the story line in the book 100 Years of Solitude by author Gabriel García Márquez, is happening right now in Sayulita.  The town is changing very steadily and pretty soon we will not recognize it.  In addition, it saddens me that most children of Sayulita local townspeople will not be able to afford to purchase their own land here.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? I really don't know.  That is an impossible question to answer.  How high can prices go before people quit buying land here?  People keep trying to buy my land but thank God I do not need the money and do not have to sell.  The price just goes up with every offer.  I really hope Sayulita stays the same as it is now, only with better streets.

10 Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita?  There should be, must be, and will be a better cooperation between locals people from this town and others who are moving here from outside the area.  Everyone needs to be involved with helping make Sayulita a better place.  You can't just sit back and hope others will take care of the problems for you.
