New Tequila Bar

Opens in Sayulita

Wednesday night marked the grand opening of Sayulita's first Tequila bar located alongside Sayulita Fish Taco. The bar currently offers 110 different types of Tequilas and Mark Albert (owner) plans to add another 50 in the coming weeks. Mark's goal is to serve the widest spectrum of tequila in the state Nayarit while also offering award-winning bottles of Tequila.

About 40 people turned out for the grand opening where over 160 free tequila shots were handed out. Music by Anna and The Jimadors kept the party entertained. The bar will be open from noon-10PM daily except for Sundays (closed).

La noche del miércoles marcó la gran inauguración de la primera Sayulita Tequila bar situado junto a Sayulita Fish Taco. El bardo actualmente ofrece 110 diferentes tipos de tequilas y Mark Albert (propietario) los planes para añadir otros 50 en las próximas semanas. Marcas objetivo es servidor de la más amplia gama de tequila, mientras que en Nayarit también ofrece galardonado botellas.

Alrededor de 40 personas resultaron para la gran apertura, donde más de 160 tiros libres de tequila fueron entregados a cabo. Música de Anna y El Jimadors mantener entretenido el partido. El bar estará abierto desde el mediodía-10pm todos los días, excepto para los domingos (cerrado).

to Receive Giant Makeover

With the intention of improving Sayulita as touristic destination the president of the municipality Hector Paniagua Salazar, has begun a major street renovation valued at more than $3.5 million pesos to build a new boulevard from the entrance of Sayulita to the main bridge over the arroyo.

Many residents of Sayulita and their families came to attend the opening ceremony for this project which addressed Sayulita as a beautiful town but in need of better traffic order.

The President invited the ejidatarios as well as local residents to participate actively in the growth of Sayulita and the surrounding area. The municipality has been granted a record budget approval and 70% of this budget will be designated to public works projects.

This is the 20th project that has started under Paniagua and he visits each one personally to witnesses the quality of the work. The construction of this boulevard is going to improve the entrance to Sayulita and with the support of the Ejido and its residents the project will be fairly quick and easy.

Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit/Diciembre 14.- Con el propósito de elevar la ciudad de Sayulita como destino turístico, el presidente Héctor Paniagua Salazar puso en marcha obras por más de tres millones y medio de pesos para construir un boulevard de ingreso hasta el puente con la invitación a todos los habitantes de este hermoso lugar a construir junto con el gobierno de Nayarit y de Bahía de Banderas un sitio de carácter internacional.
A este arranque de obras acudieron docenas de vecinos, originarios de Sayulita y familias que atraídos por la belleza de este lugar, con calles pintorescas pero sin orden en sus vialidades.

Héctor Paniagua, acompañado de regidores y funcionarios municipales, aseguró que el año próximo su administración va a hacer muchas obras importantes para todo el municipio y desde luego, también para Sayulita que forma parte de la Riviera Nayarit que se anuncia en televisión y medios impresos de los Estados Unidos y de Europa.
Invitó el presidente a los ejidatarios y a los vecinos, a participar en este vigoroso crecimiento pues se cuenta con el mayor presupuesto en la historia de todo Nayarit y el 70 por ciento de este presupuesto será destinado para obra pública.
Con esta obra son veinte las que se les han dado ya el banderazo y en las veinte se trabaja activamente pues personalmente el presidente Héctor Paniagua visita cada una para observar su crecimiento. La más próxima a inaugurarse es la plaza de la Colonia Ovando, que vivió este fin de semana sus fiesta patronales a la Virgen de Guadalupe.
Esta semana será terminado su kiosco y en los jardines serán colocadas plantas ornamentales con árboles y palmeras de buen tamaño, flores tropicales de la región. A todas estas obras en proceso, se les van a agregar muchas más a partir de enero próximo pues el presupuesto de egresos aprobado ya por el cabildo es de mil 33 millones de pesos.

El caso de Sayulita por formar parte de la marca Riviera Nayarit, es muy especial pues es un sitio de reconocimiento internacional por sus olas en las que los aficionados al windsurf llegan durante todo el año.
La construcción de este boulevard le va a dar mayor calidad a su ingreso y con el apoyo del ejido y de sus habitantes, su crecimiento será más acelerado.

Litibu Turtle Project
(just south of Sayulita)

As the Turtle season (July-December) wraps up, the SEMARNAT certified Turtle sanctuary in Litibu reports a 93% success rate of returning eggs-to-hatchlings into the ocean. Gilberto Galindino Castrol, a biologist and president of "Manos Unidas Ecologico Por Litibu", has worked every night from sunset to sunrise during the past 6-month nesting season. He has a strong committment to the environment and the Sea Turtle species in the area which are the Olive Ridley, the Hawksbill, and the Leatherback.

Other volunteers included Cristy Holden, Susan Drexler and Jan Kearton, treasurer, who have all donated long hours and hard work to help deter the turtle's biggest threats which are boaters and poachers who steal the eggs to sell on the Mexican black market. Gilberto and a few of the residents of Punta Negra and Litibu have enjoyed seeing a dramatic increase in turtle nestings as they welcomed back turtles rescued many years before. Last Saturday, December 13th, the first ever Turtle Fest was held at the plaza in the Village of Emilano Zapata (just next to Punta de Mita). Children from the schools of Punta de Mita, Emiliano Zapata, Higuera Blanca, and La Cruz de Hunacaxtle participated in the after-school program (Peace Mexico education programs) creating drawings and learning about the ecology of turtles on our beaches. Money raised by the children at this event will go to the Litibu Turtle Project.

Last month, Manos Unidas received a challenge grant from a small US Foundation. Any amount contributed during the next month will be matched up to $2,500. Llegando al fin de la temporada de las Tortugas, la cual dura 6 meses durante los meses de Julio hasta diciembre, el santuario de tortugas certificado por SEMARNAT en Litibu informa que ha tenido un 93% de éxito en regresar las tortugas recién incubadas al oceano. Gilberto Galindino Castrol, un biólogo y presidente de "Manos Unidas Ecológico por Litibu" ha trabajado cada noche desde el atardecer hasta el amanecer por los últimos 6 meses de la temporada, tiene un compromiso fuerte al medio ambiente y a las especias de tortugas en la área, las cuales incluyen los Olive Ridley, los Hawksbills y los Leatherbacks.

Otros voluntarios son Cristy Holden, Susan Drexler y Jan Kearton, tesorera, y han donado su tiempo y mucho trabajo para ayudar a impedir las amenazas más grandes para las tortugas; las lanchas, y los ladrones que roban los huevos para venderlos en el mercado negro en México. Gilberto y otros residentes de Punta Negra y Litibu han visto un aumento drástico en las anidaciones de tortugas, mientras dan la bienvenida a tortugas rescatadas desde hace muchos años. El sábado pasado, el 13 de Diciembre, la primera fiesta de tortugas paso en la plaza del pueblo Emilano Zapata (a lado de Punta Mita). Niños de las escuelas en Punta de Mita, Emilano Zapata, Higuera Blanca y en Litibu participaron en el programa Peace Mexico Education Programs y hicieron dibujos y aprendieron sobre la ecología de las tortugas.

El dinero recaudado en este evento será donado al proyecto de tortugas en Litibu. El mes pasado "Manos Unidas" recibió una subvención de una fundación estadounidense y ahora cada cantidad contribuida hasta 2,500.00 dólares será igualada para alcanzar a los 5,000 dólares. 4. Education level: I graduated from the equivalent of High School in Honduras.

5. Family history & information? My father was from Caracas, Venezuela and my mother was from Tegucigalpa, Honduras. They met at the University of Honduras.

6. Employment/business history: In Honduras, I worked in a factory making floor and wall tiles. Starting in the early 70's, I studied theater for five years joining the group, El Geraldo, which performed plays all over Central America including Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Guatemala. I did this for a while but eventually had to return to the tile factory. My first visit to Mexico was in 1976 with the play group mentioned above. I then returned in 1981 with the proper papers and attempted to become a professional soccer player. I also met a girl in Mexico City and ended up moving to Bucerias with her in 1985 where I supported us with a variety of small jobs.

In 1996 I began working for El Meridiano de PV (local newspaper) in their distribution and sales department. In 1998 I saw an opportunity to create a small group that began selling American newspapers here in the Puerto Vallarta area. We now sell many American papers and are an official distributor for Mexican newspapers as well. My team sells newspapers in all of the following towns: Punta Mita, La Cruz, Bucerias, Mezcales, San Vicente, San Jose, Valle de Banderas, Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita, and San Pancho.

6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: En Honduras trabaje en una fábrica hacienda pisos y azulejos. Empecé al inicio de los 70's. Yo estudie teatro por cinco años, me uní al grupo El Geraldo que representaba obras en todo Centro América incluyendo Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia y Guatemala. Hice esto por un tiempo pero después tuve que regresar a la fábrica de pisos. Mi primera visita a México fue en 1976 con el grupo El Geraldo. Entonces regrese en 1981 con los documentos adecuados e hice el intento de convertirme en un jugador profesional de fut bol. Incluso conocí a una muchacha en la Ciudad de México y termine mudándome a Bucerías con ella en 1985 donde la mantuve haciendo diferentes trabajitos.

En 1996 comencé a trabajar para El Meridiano de Puerto Vallarta (el periódico local) en el departamento de distribución y ventas. En 1998 vi la oportunidad de crear un pequeño grupo que empezó a vender periódicos de Estados Unidos aquí en el área de Puerto Vallarta. Ahora vendemos muchos periódicos estadounidenses y somos distribuidores oficiales de periódicos mexicanos, también. Mi equipo vende periódicos en todos estos pueblos: Punta de Mita, La Cruz, Bucerías, Mezcales, San Vicente, San José del Valle, Valle de Banderas, Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita y San Pancho.

7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? Sayulita is such a different town now than when I first came here in 1985. Back then, Si Hay Olitas was a cantina. The growth in general has been very positive with better services, restaurants, infrastructure, and electricity at almost all hours of the day and night.

El crecimiento general ha sido muy positivo con mejores servicios, restaurantes, infraestructura y electricidad a todas horas del día, día y noche.

8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. I feel the Mexican Government is not keeping up with its necessary commitment to a growing town. The government should invest even more in Sayulita to ensure the village can handle the larger population of residents and tourists alike.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita? Creo que el gobierno mexicano no esta totalmente comprometido con el crecimiento del pueblo. El gobierno debería invertir más en Sayulita para fortalecer el pueblo y que pueda manejar la gran cantidad de residentes y turistas, también.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? It will be very populated with even more foreigners and more tourism. I think Sayulita may even be the center for tourism on the north end of the Banderas Bay, competing with Puerto Vallarta!
