I don’t get massages nearly often enough, so as I was headed to Body Restoration Massage Studio and Boutique in Sayulita, I was very much looking forward to it. The owner, and massage therapist, Alejandra Montoya has a wealth of experience, including working as a traveling massage therapist with the performers of Corteo, a Cirque Du Soleil show. Having studied various styles of holistic bodywork and massage therapy, her massages incorporate Swedish, Thai, deep tissue, and hot stone massage, as well as pressure points, and I knew I was definitely in for a treat.

Alejandra’s massage studio is located at Calle Miramar 18, caddy corner from the Libreria Sayulita. As I stepped through the doorway, a faint scent of incense greeted me, along with Alejandra’s smile and her friendly and welcoming disposition. In preparation for the massage, she asked if I had any injuries or recent surgeries, and then stepped out of the room to give me privacy as I disrobed and made myself comfortable on the massage table.

The minute Alejandra first laid her hands on me, I was afraid all words would leave me, and later I’d only be able to describe the body treatment as amazing. Using warm coconut massage oil, hand pressed by a family near La Penita, she made long strokes up and down the middle of my back with her hands, followed by the use of her thumbs to massage along the length of my spine. All the while hot stones wrapped and secured in a towel, rested on my lower back, further adding to the element of relaxation.

Her fingers pressed on pressure points and her magic hands worked on massaging knots, relieving tension, and putting me in an extreme state of relaxation. Her forearms, as well as hot stones, were also used as a mode of massage. The hot stones wrapped in the towel were placed on the back of my hamstring, then the other, and eventually under my neck when it was time to flip onto my back. I kept getting goose bumps, which made me wonder if I was cold, but upon further consideration, I realized it was simply because the massage was that good. A scalp massager, also commonly referred to as a spider massage tool, was the icing on the cake, taking the massage to a whole new level.

The massage ended with a facial massage utilizing oil with a vague scent of roses, followed by a light spritz of white lotus aromatic water, which felt refreshing as it settled on my face. As relaxed as I was, I could have stayed on the massage table and taken a nap, but instead, I got up to check out two racks of Uranta brand yoga clothes Alejandra has for sale in her massage studio. The clothes, many brightly colored and all look extremely comfortable, are designed by two single mothers near Chapala and are made from dead stock, which are leftover fabric pieces from other clothing companies.

As I headed toward the door, Alejandra kindly offered me a parting gift of a teabag to take home and further my relaxation. But, believe me, after the massage Alejandra gave me, I was already relaxed as can be.
