An interview with Kristi Horn, who is the owner of the renowed High Horse Salon in Brooklyn. With Sea Horse Mexico - Hair By Kristi Horn in Sayulita, she once again is bound for success. Not only does she bring over 13 years of experience, she is also very passionate in creating the perfect wedding day hair. No plans of getting married yet? With Sea Horse Mexico - Hair by Kristi Horn, you can also benefit from, and indulge in, her in-home stylist services for expats and residents of Sayulita and the surrounding areas.

Kristi, would you tell us a little about yourself?

My favorite thing in life is travel. My husband and I have traveled all over the world together and have been to 40+ countries and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. We are always up for an adventure, and we rarely like to go to the same place twice. But, that all changed when we first came to Punta de Mita six years ago. We knew immediately that this was a place we could come back to time and time again. About a year ago, we took the plunge and purchased some land after we discovered the magical area of Litibu, and of course Sayulita. We are almost finished building our house now, and can't wait to trade the snowy NYC winters for the sun and surf of Mexico.

Did you always want to be a hairstylist, and what prompted you to get into styling hair?

I decided at a very early age to pursue my career in hair styling. I worked in my mother's hair salon throughout high school as the "shampoo girl" and loved the environment. It was amazing to see how something as simple as a haircut could change someone’s day. Giving the gift of self-confidence was extremely rewarding to witness. I also loved the idea of being able to build friendships with your clients, as that is not something that comes with most jobs. Seeing how happy clients were to see their stylist and catch up on life since their last visit was great.

Could you highlight for us the services you offer at Sea Horse Mexico - Hair By Kristi Horn?

At Sea Horse, I do everything to create your perfect hairstyle, whether it is for a wedding or any other (special) event. Besides onsite styling and hair services, I also offer in-home cut and color services to expats and residents of Sayulita and Punta de Mita. To assure you that you will get the best of the best, I offer a personalized consultation for brides.

Will you tell us about a memorable moment you had at Sea Horse Mexico - Hair by Kristi Horn while doing hair?

One of my favorite moments was being able to style my best friend's hair for her wedding. There is nothing better than being a part of your bestie's wedding and getting to glam up all the girls while laughing, reminiscing, and sipping on champagne. Witnessing a bride and groom have their first look is always a tear jerker for me.

What is the difference between styling hair for a wedding versus everyday wear?

The main difference between styling wedding hair versus everyday wear is the prep. Prepping the hair for a wedding style is just as important as the actual styling.

Using products that will hold a style for hours so a bride can dance without worrying if her hair will fall, or if the wind will ruin it, or just being touched by all the guests brushing up to get a picture with her, all starts with a really good foundation. For an everyday look, you want to use products that give you a more natural look that will hold up throughout the work day without being too greasy by the end of the day. You want to use products that will allow you to wake up the next day and still look good without washing. Anyone who has ever had an updo will tell you a shampoo is a must the next day- this is mainly from the heavy products used to keep the style, oh and the 500 bobby pins we hid in there without you seeing!

Kristi, you have over 13 years of experience and are a certified Wella Master Colorist. What does it take to be successful in your industry?

To be a successful stylist in the hair industry, you need to keep up to date on the latest trends and styles. The most successful stylists are always bouncing ideas off other stylists and routinely taking classes. In a fashion based industry, looks change and evolve daily. You must make sure you have all of the tools and skills to offer any client any service they request, and do it with confidence.

What is your Sea Horse Mexico - Hair By Kristi Horn #1 hair care tip?

I would have to say my #1 hair care tip would be to wash your hair 2-3 times a week maximum. Your natural oils are designed to condition and protect your hair, so when you shampoo daily, you are stripping those vital oils away. Your scalp will start overproducing oil to compensate, and therefore, you'll end up needing to shampoo more often resulting in dry, dull hair. Instead, invest in a dry shampoo to use on days you aren't cleansing. It will give your hair a shampooed look with the bonus of amazing texture, while keeping your hair healthy and happy.
