Update from the "Amigos de Sayulita" group.

Hola Amigos,

Good afternoon to all of you and I hope this email finds you well today, where ever you may be.  The meeting we had last week was successful in accomplishing the few things we can do at this time.  Attendance was low due to the time of year, and I thank all that were able to participate.

Jennifer Culp spoke with the Ejido about the use of the Casa Cultura as a Drop Center, and also to use it for various community activities.  She was advised that the Ejido no longer has the power over it, and to contact a government office for permission(s).  I am not yet sure which office to talk with, but am working on finding out.  The Casa Cultura is a great central location and we would like to be able to use it for our activities, and to make it accessible for the many here in town, foreign and Mexican.  Jen then found that we may be able to use the old Senior Center instead, as that is operated by the Ejido, and they soon will be opening their new center.  Both centers are located upon entering town, near the Salud.  We are still waiting to hear whether it is confirmed that we can use it to meet our needs.  If so, we will be moving the Drop Center there as soon as possible.

Mario is putting on children's art classes Wednesday and Friday evenings at teh Senior Center and they seem to be successful.  We are still asking for donations and supplies for the classes.  Kelly has inquired about an after school reading program and is looking into how we could start that very soon.  She may be able to also use the Senior Center once or twice a week for this purpose as well.  We will be needing childrens books (both Spanish and English) and a couple volunteers for reading an hour at a time throughout the season. This would be a great way to contribute to the community, get to know the children, and practice your Spanish.  It is a service that wouldn't take too much time and could get you very involved.  Please pass along to all that you know about the art supplies and books we need.  Sayulita's children appreciate these activities and choices very much.

Coming up in February we are looking to have a 5K/10K walk/run to raise money for Diabetes.  We don't have a date yet, but plans are in the works and I will keep everyone updated as we go.  So if you will be here in Sayulita in February------get ready to start tending to your own health so you can either walk or run for a wonderful cause.

Bruce Gearhart has again donated a great number of supplies to the Salud and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts for this.  As he brought them down from the USA, after contacting me to find out what the Sauld needed this year.  He has enabled the staff there to better care for the citizens who seek medical treatment there.  Although it is a government finded office, they almost always are in need of the most basic supplies.  The Salud is also providing us the necessary information about what health problems are prominant here in Sayulita, and what we can all do to help.

It was brought to our attention at the meeting that it appears many Mexican citizens are starting to look away from the many foreigners that walk the streets here in town.  I am not sure if this is all foreigners in general or only some. We may be starting to lose the "Buenos dias and Buenas Tardes" that we used to have spoken so regularly here.  I want to encourage all of you to continue the friendly, loving attitude that you have had since coming to Mexico.  While those of us who live here see each other everyday, let's not forget to be neighborly and living at a slower pace while greeting those we walk by. :O)

Amigos de Sayulita welcomes all ideas and we want to hear what you have to contribute to the community.  The next meeting will be in early January 2008, and I would appreciate all that are here and can attend, that they do.  More volunteer positions will be available at that time.  Thank you all for what you do to better our community and connect with all those that live here.
More to come soon...........

Sincerely,
Heather
PS- If you have donations to give anytime soon, please bring them by my office. Gracias!!
