Sayulita Sunday "Tianguis" Market (By Ursula Rodolfo)

In México, culture is not just in the museums, it is alive in the streets and you can find it everywhere you look.  Every Sunday in Sayulita you can find the rich culture of the Sayulita Sunday Market, a true part of Sayulita life and culture. In Mexico, this type of market is called “Tianguis”, similar street markets exist all over México, in small towns as well as the large cities. Tianguis are a strong Mexican tradition. 

Every Sunday starting at sunrise, you will find vendors preparing their merchandise for sale. Shoppers begin to arrive around eight in the morning, and the market usually goes until around three in the afternoon. The market is located in front of the Casa de la Cultura in downtown Sayulita.

In the first block of the market you will find the Tianguis booths, typical merchandise includes: fresh fruit and vegetables to-go, clothing, shoes, earthenware, decorative items, CD’s, DVD’s, and more. In the second block you will find the Sayulita Artisans (they are there on Saturdays too), with an art street atmosphere and hand made items which include: original silver jewelry and natural stones from México and other parts of the world, original leather purses, different kinds of hand made knitting and macramé, traditional and contemporary crafts made in México and specifically in Sayulita.  Frequently you can also enjoy live music at the Sayulita Sunday Market. Mexican percussionists and other musicians from all over the world (some of them are in passing and others live in Sayulita) create impromptu music in the streets.

For the Artisans, art, music, and hand made items are more than a way to make a living, they are a way of expressing Mexican and human culture. The Artisans will tell you that hand made art and music have their own magic.

Some years ago, the Tianguis and the Artisans sold their merchandise on the Sayulita Plaza; however, the government decided to move the Market to the other side of the river. The Tianguis and Artisans worked together to defend their right to work and sell in town. By working together, they were able to create a permanent Sayulita Market in town for locals and visitors to enjoy each Sunday. The Artisans are also involved in creating beneficial projects for the Sayulita Community. In the past, with the cooperation of the town judge the Artisans have cleaned the Sayulita beaches, they cleaned the riverbed before rains, and donated money  to help the Sayulita kindergarten.  Recently, the Artisans donated time and money to make a new speed bump “tope” in downtown Sayulita to slow the traffic and to avoid accidents. They want a better Sayulita too!

El Sayulero interview:  Miguel Guerrero

1. Name: Miguel Guererro Rodriguez 2. Year born:  Born April 5, 1953 3. Year arriving to Sayulita?  I was born in Sayulita to parents that arrived with THEIR parents (my grandparents) in 1940 to work on the Sayulita Hacienda and live in one of only 20 houses in the town. 4. Married/Family? I have been with my wife Elisa Arce Jimenez for 35 years.  I have three children.  Miguel age 27.  Laura age 33. Guadalupe (Lupita) age 20. 5. Employment/Occupation history:  I initially worked with the cocos (small coconuts made into oils) for about ten years earning less than one dollar per day.  Then, I worked in the construction business for about another seven years where I earned about $3 dollars a day.  About 20 years ago, I began managing foreign-owned houses and still manage nine of them to this day.

6. One positive change you have observed Sayulita:  I think my work/occupation history represents a “Revolucion de Sayulita” and one of the best changes we have had here.  Tourism and foreign investment have brought great opportunities to Sayulita.  No one used to earn any real money.  I couldn’t even afford a bicycle.  Life is very good to all of us now.

7. One negative change you have observed Sayulita:  I am very sad to see that the influx of new people and lifestyles from other parts of Mexico have brought drugs and drug use to our village.  Drugs are a problem in many growing towns around the world but I hope we can somehow prevent their negative influence (petty theft) here in Sayulita.  They disrupt the tranquility of our peaceful past.

8. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years?  It really depends on how the people of Sayulita prepare for the changes to come.  As long as we continue to grow with the town and live up to the needs it requests, then the people of Sayulita will shape the future.  If we are lazy and do nothing but live from the profits, then the future will be decided by others who move here from other parts of Mexico and the rest of the world.

9. A recommendation or comment for the people of Sayulita:  Understand that Sayulita is very fortunate to be a town that lives and depends upon tourism and foreign investment.  In order to preserve this quality of life we have been blessed with, we need to be proactive in the following areas:

• Village cleanliness
• Village security
• General kindness throughout the village

 

SAYULITA SPORTS—Soccer game tonight (By Ursula Rodolfo)

The baseball field was full of Sayulita fans for the Sunday game when the Jaibos del Pacífico (from Sayulita) played two games against the Sentispac . After two great games and tough competition, the two teams are tied: 1 to 1.  The Tournament continues next Sunday when Sentispac will host the Jaibos del Pacifico.             The Football tournament – “Football de Barrios”, also continues at the Sayulita field. Thursday February 14th Football Schedule Guamuchil vs. Nopal at 6:30 p.m. San Quintín vs. Mangal at 7:30 p.m.

 

 

Starting February 15th, all games will be suspended for 15 days in preparation for Sayulita Days.

En México, en Sayulita, la cultura no sólo se encuentra en los museos, está viva, en las calles, puedes descubrirla en todas partes. El mercado del domingo es parte de la vida de Sayulita y se conoce como “tianguis” (este tipo de mercado existe en todo el resto de México, tanto en los pueblos pequeños como en las ciudades, es parte de la tradición). En Sayulita, los domingos desde el amanecer varios vendedores están listos para preparar sus puestos.  La gente comienza a llegar temprano, desde las 8 de la mañana, y el mercado suele terminar a las 3 de la tarde. Cada domingo el tianguis se pone frente a Casa de la Cultura en Sayulita. Desde la primera cuadra se pueden encontrar diferentes puestos: frutas y verduras para llevar, playeras, ropa, zapatos, vajilla de barro, objetos de decoración y más. Y en la segunda cuadra se ubican los artesanos de Sayulita (ellos están los sábados también), con atmósfera de arte callejero y diversos objetos hechos a mano: joyería original en plata y piedras naturales de México (como ámbar, jadeita, obsidiana, turquesa) y de otras partes del mundo, originales bolsos de piel, diferentes tejidos, como el macramé, artesanía tradicional y contemporánea hecha en México y especialmente en Sayulita. Con frecuencia, también puedes encontrar música en vivo, percusionistas y músicos mexicanos y de otras partes del mundo (algunos de paso y otros que aquí viven) que se juntan y tocan en las calles. Para ellos, las artes, la música, la artesanía, son más que una forma de ganarse la vida. Son una forma de expresión de la cultura mexicana y humana. Y cuentan que las cosas hechas a mano, como la música, tienen su propia magia.

Algunos años atrás, todos ellos, tianguistas y artesanos, solían estar en la plaza del centro, pero la política gubernamental decidió moverlos hasta el otro lado del río. Tuvieron que luchar para defender sus derechos, para poder trabajar y tener un lugar en el pueblo, así como para defender su dignidad. Y están ayudando a hacer cosas buenas para la comunidad también.  En más de una ocasión, y con apoyo del delegado actual, juntaron esfuerzos para limpiar las playas de Sayulita así como calles que rodean el río antes de las lluvias, también juntaron fondos voluntarios entre ellos mismos para ayudar al jardín de niños de Sayulita. Actualmente, también han hecho un nuevo tope para evitar accidentes en el centro. ¡Ellos también quieren un Sayulita mejor! ¡Hazte una caminata de domingo y disfruta de este original mercado!

1. Nombre del entrevistado: Miguel Guererro Rodriguez 2. Año de nacimiento/Edad:  Nacido el  5 de Abril de 1953. 3. ¿Nació en Sayulita?/¿En qué año llegó a Sayulita?  Nací en Sayulita, con mis padres que llegaron con sus padres (mis abuelos) en 1940 para trabajar en la Hacienda de Sayulita y vivir en una casa entre las sólo 40 casas que había en el pueblo. 4. ¿Vive con su familia? ¿Cuántos son?  He vivido con Elisa Arce Jiménez por 35 años. Y tuve 3 hijos: Miguel (27), Laura (33), Guadalupe (Lupita, de 20 años).

 

5. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación:  Inicialmente trabajé con los cocos (con los cocos pequeños, los de aceite) durante 10 años, ganando menos de un dólar por día. Luego trabajé en el negocio de la construcción durante otros 7 años, donde ganaba alrededor de 3 dólares al día. Hace como 20 años atrás, empecé a administrar casas de extranjeros y aún hoy administro 9 casas.

6. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita:  Pienso que mi ocupación actual representa una revolución en Sayulita y uno de los mejores cambios que hemos tenido aquí. La inversion extranjera y el turismo ha traído grandes oportunidades a Sayulita. Nadie antes ganaba buen dinero. No me alcanzaba ni para una bicicleta. La vida es muy buena ahora para todos nosotros.  

7. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita:  Estoy muy triste de ver la influencia de gente nueva y estilos de vida de otras partes de México que han traido drogas y que usan la droga en nuestro pueblo. Las drogas son un problema en muchos pueblos que están creciendo en todo el mundo, pero espero que aquí en Sayulita podamos de alguna forma prevenir su influencia negativa (robos).

8. ¿Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años?  Esto realmente depende de cómo se prepare la gente para los cambios venideros. Tan pronto como continuemos creciendo con el pueblo y cumplamos con sus necesidades y requerimientos, luego, la gente de Sayulita dará forma al futuro. Si somos flojos y no hacemos nada, pero vivimos de sus ganancias, luego, el futuro será decidido por otros que se mudan aquí de otras partes de México y del resto del mundo.

 

9. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita: Entender que Sayulita es muy afortunada, por ser un pueblo que vive y depende del turismo y la inversión extranjera. Hemos sido bendecidos con esto, y en el orden de preservar esta cualidad necesitamos ser activos en las siguientes áreas: Limpieza, Seguridad, y amabilidad general en todas partes del pueblo.

Deportes en Sayulita (By Ursula Rodolfo)

 

El campo de baseball estuvo realmente lleno este último Domingo. Los jaibos del Pacífico de Sayulita recibieron a Sentispac y después de dos juegos empataron 1 a 1. Pero el campeonato continúa… Para el próximo domingo, los Jaibos no serán locales, tienen que ir a Sentispac esta vez, pero la gente de Sayulita espera  que ganen las eliminatorias de todas formas. El baseball es el deporte favorito aquí, pero no es el único. Actualmente, también se está jugando un campeonato de fútbol conocido como “fútbol de barrios”. Hoy habrá tres juegos:

Pechugos vs. Chedeca a las 6:30 p.m.
                                                       Bebeleche vs. Carroñeros a las 7:30 p.m.
                                                       Centro vs. Rudos a las 8:30 p.m.

           Y para mañana:   
                                                         Guamuchil vs. Nopal a las 6:30 p.m.
                                                         San Quintín vs. Mangal a las 7:30 p.m.

Luego los partidos serán suspendidos por 15 días ya que Sayulita tiene que preparar su campo para el 24 de Febrero… ¡La Fiesta de Sayulita!
