Description

Casa Ballena is a small, aesthetically-designed vacation home, built for me by Sayulita's favorite architect, Estela Gayosso.  The parota-wood doors open the livingroom onto the cantera-tiled terrace with the palapa providing shade and breezes, as well as entertaining space.  It is only a 6-minute walk to downtown/beach.

Named for its whale fountain, Casa Ballena treats one to a lovely "botanical" garden with a "cantera rustico" walkway, an outdoor shower, a fully-equipped kitchen with a pass-through window for entertaining, and a little back yard with clothesline for those beach clothes.  The October, 2016 new palapa  is lovely and is the real livingroom of the Casa.  New rock-enclosed gardens are along the walkway.  New and excellent lighting provides safety at night.

!! NOTE !!   CASA BALLENA now has a new casita (Casita Molusco) ready for extra guests or separate guests.  The up-scale, attached, but separately-entranced "bungalo" will sleep another couple (no young children or teens).  The modern design is exciting and convenient.  It is completed with a mini-kitchen, a great bathroom, terrace with view, and space for enjoyment of the neighborhood.  Please ask for details.  The photos following the two Heliconia flower shots are of Casita Molusco.  More are available.

CASA BALLENA and the new CASITA MOLUSCO each have a 4-night minimum stay.

Immaculate and great host
The casita was an excellent choice for a quick holiday getaway. Place is immaculate and Jean is so easy to work with. Easy walk into town and quick access by car to head towards Punta de Mita. Would definitely book the casita for a future trip.

Great location
The photographs Jean has posted of the property do not do it justice. It is a beautiful home with a unique and inviting floor plan. The patio palapa is a wonderful place to enjoy morning coffee and have a quiet evening when you want to escape the lively downtown scene. We had several friends vacationing in the area at the same time and they were all jealous of our awesome digs!

When we first arrived I felt we were a little removed from downtown, but the walk to el centro turned out to be a very fast five minute jaunt down the hill. The location is very convenient; close enough to get into town quickly, but just far enough up the hill for it to be a quiet, peaceful escape.

I was up before dawn every day to surf and it was an easy 10 or so minute walk to the beach (at first when you see the water from the road it seems so far away, but the beach is actually closer than you think. It really is a short, easy walk and I would be in the water about 15 minutes after rolling out of bed each morning). Lastly, the outdoor shower cannot be beat. Thank you, Jean!

Casa Ballena is amazing!
A quick 10 minute walk up the hill from the center of Sayulita, Casa Ballena was an oasis - perfect for two people who need and want to relax! The kitchen was fully stocked, the garden was beautiful, and it was super comfortable. Sayulita can be a bumpin' town, and this house was just removed enough to be quiet - the house across the street does have some vocal chickens and one sassy turkey, but it wasn't an issue at all.

The outdoor shower is amazing! We arrived close to midnight and it was a little confusing once we got to Sayulita in a cab - we got to the plaza in the center of town, headed up the hill and made the first left. The house is on the left past a little jungle-y split in the road. If you are using Google Maps, be warned that the location of the house is wrong in the app! Jean is an extremely communicative and accommodating host who definitely takes pride in her guests and property. 100% would stay here again. Thanks Jean + Casa Ballena!

beautiful home, gorgeous garden!
Jean's Casa Ballena is the perfect place to stay if you're visiting Sayulita or surrounding areas. It is a beautiful home with a gorgeous garden and is just 5 minutes from town and the beach. Jean was a gracious and flexible host and contacted us early on to set expectations and provide some great recommendations for places to go/things to do. We hope to visit again sometime soon!

Secluded and relaxing
My husband and I just finished a two and a half week stay at Casa Ballena. We both agree that it was probably the most relaxing house that we have ever stayed at in Salulita. The yard is beautiful and Casa Ballena itself is simply lovely. The walk to town was not onerous at all and there was never any noise from the plaza at night, it is by far the quietest place we have ever stayed at on Gringo Hill. It is a lovely couples retreat and all in all, we would highly recommend Casa Ballena.

Elegant and just like new!
Casa Ballena as of February, 2015, has been totally re-furbished -- new roof, complete interior and exterior paint with an exciting color in the outdoor shower reflecting cheer even into the house. The cantera terrace has been polished and sealed and sports new, comfortable (expensive) chairs. The management has changed and all guests are warmly welcomed.

The photo of the house from the road looks so elegant so as to have enticed people into the property who should probably be staying at The Bliss or Mayan Palace in Nuevo Vallarta. This is Sayulita where maintenance is constant and guests should realize that not everything can be perfected to Canadian or American standards, as much as we try or would like.

Extremely disappointed.
Upon arrival at a prearranged time we were met by no one. After waiting for what seemed forever, as it was late in the afternoon, we were fortunate to find a hidden key. Upon entering the house with friends we were overcome with the smell of mold and mildew. The smell persisted for the time we were there. We had been instructed not to open windows at night which made the smell overwhelming. We were not happy. As well the kitchen counters were covered in ants and there was no comfortable place to lounge: the furniture and the bed are very uncomfortable. We decided to cut our stay short and were very happy to leave.

Arrival time was a mix-up, and managers never know exactly what time guests will arrive. Any problems have been resolved and everyone loves this property.

lovely casita in Sayulita
Casa Ballena in Sayulita is a lovely casita with many fine architectural details in a nice residential neighborhood. We loved the garden and had fun spotting iguanas and tropical birds from the terrace. We especially enjoyed an authentic Mexican dinner prepared by the house staff.

highly recommend
We had an excellent stay in Jean's house. The place is like it is in the photos, very pretty and spacious, with all comforts for two people. Truly, a place very recommendable and very few minutes from the village. Definitely we would like to return!

Lovely home!
We stayed in Casa Ballena for the xmas/new year holiday. It is a lovely home very centrally located. It had everything we needed for our week long stay. We loved it! It is located on Gringo Hill, so the walk home is a little steep and not the best for anyone with difficulty walking. Perfect for a couple. The owner was very easy to work with.
