Since Thursday of last week, work went underway to begin widening the main street coming into Sayulita, Calle Revolucion. "Obras Publicas" will be turning the street into a 4 lane boulevard. During this past week the road has been closed between the North side of the town bridge where the bus stop is and Calle Playa Azul. Traffic has been rerouted around and towards the baseball field and the busses have to back up and turn around at Calle Manuel Rodriquez Sanchez to avoid the road closure causing slight traffic delays at the bridge. The work on the new, wider road includes new pipelines, town water tubing, and drainage. The bridge will also be reinforced.
The new four-lane boulevard is expected to be completed by Semana Santa in April. For now, all traffic will have to make the detour. Despite the road closure, most the stores and shops are still open for business along the North end of town on Calle Revolucion.
Desde el jueves de la semana pasada, la obra de hacer mas ancha la calle revolución, entrando Sayulita empezó. Obras Públicas esta convirtiendo la calle a un bulevar de 4 carriles. Durante esta semana la calle estaba cerrada entre el lado norte del puente donde esta la parada de camiones y calle Playa Azul El tráfico desvía por el campo de béisbol y los camiones tienen que dar toda la vuelta por el puente y regresar por la calle Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez para evitar la calle clausurada, causando un poco de demoras por el puente. El trabajo que están haciendo con la nueva calle mas ancha incluye tubería para el agua del pueblo y drenaje. También van a reforzar el puente.

Here in Sayulita and around the world Americans celebrated the inauguration of their 44th President, Barack Obama. Greg Pearce & Doug Downs owners of Afortunados Restaurant and Bar opened their establishment at 8 a.m. and served juice, coffee, and pan dulece (the proceeds of which will be donated to the "Bertha Von Glumer Jardin de Ninos") to the ex-pats. and visitors who crowded in to watch the ceremony on the 50" TV. Close to 200 people cheered, sang, and cried as America's first Black President took the oath of office. Chants of "O-BA-MA" and "Yes we can" echoed around the world on what some see as the beginning of a brave new era in the history of the United States.

Some wonderful projects are either underway or recently completed at Damian Carmona Grammar School. With funding from an anonymous donor and the support of the parents teachers association at that school, led by Mrs. Josefina Castillon and Mr. Joel Ruiz, the food court area has been refurbished and new stairs have been built to service the area of the new classrooms.
Architect Luis Diaz has informed us that work is well underway on the new classroom that's being funded by donations from the November fundraiser. The roof will be done this week and we are hoping that in February the children will be able to use the new classroom.
On Friday, January 16th, the children of Damian Carmona were the recipients of hundreds of school supplies that were generously donated by Sayulita's sister city, Firestone, Colorado, and by Beth Adams. The children were more than delighted to have new pencils, crayons, markers, sharpeners, rulers, and other supplies. Our gratitude to Susana and Jerry De Nouvellis, and Christine Hollister, all Firestone residents, who were instrumental in getting the supplies and to Beth Adams for her generosity.
Little by little our public schools will continue to change so that all the children will have the opportunity and learning tools they will need to prosper in a changing Sayulita. We thank everyone who is donating time and/or money to help towards this outcome.
Algunos importantes proyectos estan en proceso mientras que otros ya han sido terminados en la Escuela Damian Carmona . Con dinero donado anonimamente y con el apoyo de la asociacion de padres de familia representados por Josefina Castillon, y Joel Ruiz, se ha remodelado la zona de mesas de comedor. Tambien nuevas escaleras se han construido en el lado sur de la escuela para dar servicio a las nuevas aulas.
El Architecto Luis Diaz nos ha informado que el trabajo de construccion de la nueva aula, financiada por los donativos del evento de Noviembre, progrsa muy bien. Esta semana se colocara el techo. Esperamos que para el mes de Febrero los ninos puedan tener uso de la nueva aula.
El Viernes, 16 de Enero, los ninos de Damian Carmona recibieron cientos de utiles donados por la ciudad de Firestone, Colorado, ciudad hermana de Sayulita y por Beth Adams. Los ninos estuvieron mas que felices de recibir nuevos lapices, plumas, crayolas, y otros utiles escolares.
Nuestro agradecimiento a Susana y Jerry DeNouvellis, a Christine Hollister, todos residents de Firestone, quienes fueron responsables de coseguir y transportar estas cosas y a Beth Adams por su generosidad.
Poco a poco nuestras escuelas publicas continuan cambiando para que los ninos tengan lo necesario para prosperar en una Sayulia cambiante.
Les agradecemos a todos los que con su tiempo o dinero siguen apoyando esta causa. | On January 18, local police arrested Jose Angel Delgado Crespo, aka "El Muerto" soon after he had gone into a house in Sayulita and stolen a blender.
The victim's name was Melendrez Mireya Rodriguez, who pointed out the accused who was trying to flee the scene of the crime.Also found in the suspects pockets where two pairs of earrings and other jewelry belonging to the owner of the blender.
We thank our local police force for their hard work and efforts to keep Sayulita safe.
Bahía de Banderas Nayarit/ Enero 18.- La policía municipal detuvo José Ángel Crespo Delgado, alias "El Muerto" luego de que este sujeto se internara a una casa habitación situada en Sayulita y se robara una licuadora.
La afectada, de nombre Mireya Meléndrez Rodríguez, fue quien denunció al truhán ante los agentes, luego de que descubrió que dicho sujeto ya estaba por darse a la fuga.
Cabe mencionar que al practicarle una revisión corporal al "Muerto" también le sacaron de entre las bolsas de sus pantalones, dos pares de aretes de metal amarillo y otro blanco con pedrería color blanco y rosa, los cuales también reconoció como de su propiedad la denunciante.
Finalmente, José Ángel de 30 años de edad, originario de Mexcatitán, municipio de Santiago Ixcuintla, y vecino de Sayulita, con domicilio en calle Coral No. 7, fue trasladado a la cárcel pública municipal de Valle de Banderas.w | | 1. Linda, my wife, and I arrived in Sayulita in January of 2004, after visiting here for the first time in August of 2003. For me, it was the typical story of "love at first sight". For Linda, it was "love at second sight".

7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? In the five years since we first arrived, I've seen the popularity of Sayulita increase dramatically. With popularity comes increases in needs for housing services and tourist related businesses and activities. I'm glad to have seen a positive, energetic response from the local community to seize the economic opportunities by building new shops and remodeling and adding to older places. Everyone seems excited with the possibilities.

8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita? With an increase in tourist popularity comes an increase in petty crime. Unfortunately, I've heard about more thefts now than there were five years ago. Many owners are purchasing safes for valuables and making sure that windows and doors are locked whenever they leave their houses, even in the middle of the day. The old adage, "Better safe than sorry" is being followed more religiously than, maybe, before. On the positive side of crime, I have not seen or heard of an increase in violent crime. Walking down Sayulita streets seems just as safe today as yesterday. This is good.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita? Con el aumento de turismo viene el aumento de delitos. Desafortunadamente, me he enterado de mas robos ahora que había hace 5 anos. Muchos duenos de casas ahora compran cajas fuertes para sus pertenencias valorosas y se aseguran que sus puertas y ventanas están cerradas con seguro cada que salen de sus casas, hasta en la luz del dia. El dicho "mas vale prevenir que lamentar" es algo que personas practican ahora mas que antes. Lo bueno es que no he escuchado de un aumento en crímenes violentes. Caminar por las calles de Sayulita todavía es seguro y esto es bueno.
9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? 2019? Because many residents of Sayulita and municipal officials seem to be aware of how correct regulations can positively affect our town, I think Sayulita will continue to grow and grow in a positive direction. When the government establishes a three-story building limit in the center and on the beach and a two-story limit on the hills, the sky and the waves will continue to be visible and Sayulita will remain a fun and interesting place for people to visit and live. Sure, Sayulita will get more crowded and there will be more traffic. And, with accurate planning for the increasing popularity that is destined to come, Sayulita can continue to develop into an enjoyable place to be and to recommend to others
9. Como imagina Sayulita en 10 anos? 2019? El hecho de que muchos residentes de Sayulita y oficiales del municipio parecen estar enterrados de cómo las regulaciones correctas pueden afectar el pueblo en una forma positiva, creo que Sayulita continuara creciendo en una dirección positiva. 10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? Just to become friendly with the fact that Sayulita is becoming "a destination" on a nationwide and international scale. For example, a French couple came by the office recently who said they had read about Sayulita in a French magazine. Therefore, since the economic base for Sayulita is tourism, we need to see our town in a larger way and realize that every part of it is important: the streets and roads, restaurants, shops, beaches, homes, services and service people, and a friendliness toward everyone all add up to the positive "magic" of Sayulita.
10. Alguna recomanidación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Simplemente ser amigable con el hecho que Sayulita se esta convirtiendo en un "destino" a escala nacional e internacional. Por ejemplo, una pareja francesa llego a la oficina el otro día y ellos dijeron que habian leido sobre Sayulita en una revista francesa. Entonces, considerando que la base económica de Sayulita es el turismo, necesitamos ver nuestro pueblo en una forma mas grande y darnos cuenta que cada parte del pueblo es importante: las calles, los restaurantes, las tiendas, la playa, las casas, los servicios, y las personas de los servicios, y tener una simpatía con todos. Todas estas cosas hacen la magia positiva de Sayulita.
