| | NeLos Tikkilyches: taking their
show on the road
Sayulita's hottest band - the one with the unusual name - is taking its show on the road. Los Tikkilyches, self-described Latin-surf-funk-rockin' soul-reggae fusion group, were a hit here last season, playing many gigs for enthusiastic crowds. The band's high energy mix of covers and originals gets people on the dance floor, with hits from Aretha Franklin, Antiballas Afrobeat Orchestra, Bob Marley and Manu Chao. Starting August 2, the band embarks on a self-financed tour, with shows in Coloma, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and the Burning Man Festival in California; Eugene, Bend, and Portland, Oregon; Hood River, Seattle, Yakima, and Twisp, Washington; and Vancouver and Whistler, Canada.
Los Tikkilyches are: Alyssa Adams (vocals, keys, accordion), Jess Edmondson (electric guitar, vocals); Julia Blumenthal (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Jonas Brewer (electric bass, flute). Past drummers were Rio Chenery and Canek Bojorquez, but for the tour, the drummer will be Chad Bolich.
According to Blumenthal, a friend suggested the name Tikkilyches, which are little sand crabs you dig up when a wave crashes."Supposedly you can make a stew with them and they taste better than lobster," she said. "So we decided our slogan would be: 'Los Tikkilyches, mejor que langosta'."
The band formed in May, 2008. As their success grew, Blumenthal said listeners told the band they should tour.
"We started making an e-mail list ... and a lot of people wrote comments like: 'Come play in ________.' We decided to give them what they wanted!"
"It was really an overwhelming response from the fans that pushed us to do this tour," added Adams. "Their amazing help and support gave us the confidence that we can make our dream of touring with our music a reality."
Los Tikkilyches just recorded a new CD with 13 original songs they want to promote: "Bring a little South up to the North," Blumenthal explains. The band is funding the tour from tips, plus CD and T-shirt sales from the Sayulita shows. Hopefully, they'll be back in Sayulita for another rockin' high season.
"We've had such a great response from everyone in Sayulita, locals and tourists, that's what is really amazing," Blumenthal said. "I can't really go anywhere without someone asking: 'When are you guys going to play again'?"
The group's appeal is that they offer a seamless mix of modern and classic music, with both Latin and North American influences. "We are all open to creation and improvisation, so each time we play the songs are a bit different. We all have been influenced and inspired by Latin rhythms and music while living in Mexico and we have quite a few original songs in Spanish," Adams said.

| | Summertime Fishing in Sayulita
With the dog days of summer upon us, the fishing season in Sayulita is just warming up. Dawn and dusk are the best times to walk along the main beach with a light spinning rod and a handful of lures. A general spinning rod and reel spooled with 8-pound to 12-pound-test line works well. A lighter line means more hookups and maybe a few lost big fish, which you would be surprised, can be caught from shore. In fact many fishermen have snagged fish weighing over 10 pounds from the shore using light tackle.
One of many sport fishing pangas, or small motor boats, include the Karime that launches just south of Don Pedro's restaurant. A family from Guadalajara, including Oswald Castell and Angel Sioroia told El Sayulero that July is the beginning of the season to catch great fish such as Tuna, Yellowtail, Dorado and Marlin. They were hoping for all of the above but Yellowtail topped their list.
For the simple shore fishermen such as Sayulita local Luis Gerardo Natero, he uses mostly small baitfish which gather near the shore during low light, and the big fish follow them. Look for diving pelicans or squawking, screaming flocks of gulls swirling over a spot near the shore. Lots of birds mean lots of bait, and bait means big, hungry fish.
Simple lures, such as Krocodiles, Kastmasters, Rapalas and inexpensive plastic jigs, such as Mister Twisters work fairly well whenever big fish are around. Shore fishermen should buy these lures in quarter-ounce to one-ounce sizes. The lures with silvery finishes which mimic the small bait fish or live bait work best. 3. Family history? I was originally born in St. Louis, Missouri and after moving around a bit, I ended up in Indio, California. This is where I met my husband Gabe while he was a cowboy at the local rodeo. I grew up around horses and polo and one day introduced Gabe to the polo sport, and he was immediately hooked in 2004.On April 1, 2006 Gabe and I were married at the Polo Club at the Rose Garden. I currently live in Sayulita with my husband Gabe, my brother Brit, and our 2 dogs. We also have 22 horses currently in California that we hope to eventually move to Sayulita.

After graduating I moved to Boca Raton, Florida where I studied Political Science at Lynn University. After a while at Lynn, I decided to make a major move to Newport Beach, California where I got my certificate in Interior Design at the Institute of Interior Design in 2002.

After I moved to California and met Gabe, we decided to start two Golf Car companies. One was in Riverside and the other in Orange County. In 2006 I had an accident and broke my leg. In 2007, while still on crutches, Gabe and I visited Sayulita for the first time and fell in love with it. The only problem was I was on crutches and there was no place to rent a Golf Car. This turned out to not be a problem at all but an opportunity, so Gabe and I decided to move to Sayulita in 2007 and start our company Pacific Coast Golf Cars which rents ATV's as well as both gas and electric Golf Cars. Another future plan of ours is to open a Golf Car and ATV dealership along the Riviera and Bahia De Banderas which caters to everyone and handles sales, service, and as rentals.

7. What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? I really enjoy the small town culture and authentic friendliness of the Sayulita community. This along with having the beach and ocean right in my backyard make Sayulita my personal paradise.

8. Your company has supported the local community in so many ways, why? I just have always felt what goes around comes around and have that philosophy to this day. Whether it be painting the main plaza or lending ATV's to local law enforcement to patrol the beaches on busy days. I feel that I want to do as much as I can to help the community I live in and that my husband and I really love being a part of.

9. Are there any changes you would like to see in the future for Sayulita? There really isn't anything specific I would like to change except to explain to people that a car is something you drive and a cart is something you pull. That is why we are called Pacific Coast Golf Cars and not Carts.

10. Anything you would like to say to a first time visitor to Sayulita? I just want to let everyone know that the Taco Stands are completely safe. Another thing is all the water and ice you get in local restaurants is completely safe. You can drink a fresh fruit margarita on the beach and not have any worries, besides maybe a little hang over depending on the amount.
