Greetings 4,547 El Sayulero Readers, What a beautiful, sunny week it has been in Sayulita! Days have been warm and slightly humid, with the afternoons and evenings cooling off just enough to give us a nice break from the heat while we take in those spectacular sunsets. July really is a great time to be in Sayulita!
This week's "Green" El Sayulero features a report from Julia Caranci on the first planting effort of Sayulita Verde, and an interview with Viveros Villanueva's Miguel Angel Villanueva Lopez. If you're looking for something green to do this weekend, get out and plant a tree (or 3!) with Sayulita Verde! The second volunteer planting effort will be Saturday morning, July 18th. Meet at the old Aguacate Cantina (near the intersection of Av. Revolucion and the Punta de Mita hwy), and bring a pointed digging spade along with you for planting. ¡Qué hermosa semana de sol lo ha sido en Sayulita! Días han sido cálido y ligeramente húmedo, con las tardes y noches mas frescas para darnos un buen descanso del calor cuando mirando las puestas de sol espectaculares. ¡Julio de verdad es un mes bien a gusto para estar en Sayulita!
Esta semana, El Sayulero "Verde" tiene un articulo de Julia Caranci sobre Sayulita Verde y una entrevista con el dueno de Viveros Villanueva, Miguel Angel Villanueva López. Si estas buscando algo "verde" a hacer este fin de semana, ¿¡porque no vayas a plantar un árbol (o 3) con Sayulita Verde!? El segundo esfuerzo voluntario de la plantación será la mañana del sábado, 18 de Julio. Juntarán en la Cantina Aguacate (cerca la intersección de la Av. | | New Workshops Open for Summer
The Cultural Center of Sayulita has recently added some new and diverse workshops which began on Thursday July 16th, 2009 with a Grand Opening Ceremony.
Organized by Miriam Rojas Castro (pictured below), the workshops will include a wide variety of topics suitable for different ages and interests.
A how-to on Hair Styling for people over the age of 15 will take place every Monday between 4pm and 6pm. Piñata making will be held every Wednesday 4pm to 5pm, this class is open to both young people and adults. And also on Wednesday, from 5pm to 6pm a Folkloric Dance class is featured which is open to everyone as well. On Friday afternoons, a Human Development workshop will run from 4pm to 6pm.
According to Miriam, there will be a minimal fee for some of the workshops, and the current roster will be in effect for the next three months with a possibility of an extension.
The Cultural Center of Sayulita is located on the corner of Calle Gaviotas and Calle Manuel Navarrete. You will find the main entrance located mid-block on Calle Manuel Navarrete. Nuevos talleres de verano.
El Centro Cultural de Sayulita ha añadido recientemente nuevos y diversos talleres los cuales dieron comienzo el jueves 16 de julio.
Organizados por Miriam Rojas Castro, los talleres incluyen Cultora de Belleza para mayores de 15 años y tendrán lugar todos los lunes de 4pm a 6pm.
Otras clases incluyen la creación de Pinatas, y será llevado a cabo todos los miércoles de 4pm a 5pm y esta abierto a chicos y grandes. Este será seguido por el taller de Danza Folclorica que esta abierto a todo el que tenga interés, entre las 5pm y las 6pm los miércoles. Los viernes tendrá lugar el taller de Desarrollo Humano, a las 4pm y que esta abierto a todas las edades.
Habrá una cuota de recuperación minima. De acuerdo con Miriam estos talleres se llevaran a cabo durante los siguientes 3 meses con la posibilidad de extenderlos.

| | Don't just hug a tree, plant one!
A new local group is making Sayulita a greener, better place to live. Sayulita Verde is a small group of volunteers who have begun planting trees and shrubs in public areas around our pueblo. In a local nursery, native species from the Nayarit coastline are being cultivated for planting, along with some non-indigenous trees. The germ of the project (quite literally) ocurred a year ago, when a number of seedlings were planted in anticipation of this project. Long-time resident Daniel Brewer, who founded the group with partner Luisa Viteri, said Sayulita needs more trees - to create a "green consciousness".
"Also, I just really like trees," Brewer said.
He explained that the focus is on growing native evergreens: Majagua trees, Caoba (mahogany), Higuera (ficus), Sauce (weeping willow), lluvia de oro (golden rain tree) and Orquidea (white orchid tree) - all local species; as well as Rain Trees (already growing along the river) which are not local, but grow well here. Verde´s goal is to plant 300 trees and shrubs this rainy season and establish a program for their protection and care, ensuring a high survival rate.
On July 11, Sayulita Verde held its first official planting day. Fourteen trees were planted and protection installed in the area along the riverbank between Ave. Revolucion (main bridge) and the ocean. Volunteers also pruned and transplanted existing trees, and cleaned parts of the river and street. In partnership with local officials, the group has identified several planting areas along the river near the entrance to town. Possible other sites include the local elementary school and any public place that could use some green.
Sayulita Verde encourages the participation of schools, students and community members, and the group hopes to inspire local conservation efforts. Viteri has contacted officials at the elementary school and is keen on having local children participate in the plantings. Community members are invited to suggest sites. Also, the group will give trees to those who wish to plant along their streets or in their yards. Areas in Nanzal, for example, where vegetation clearing took place for construction, require greenery for future shade and erosion prevention. Viteri explained volunteers may also "adopt" planted trees and care for them. For a $15 donation, residents can adopt a tree in a public area to support the group.
Funding is required to purchase materials associated with propagation and labor, and therefore any help is great. Sayulita Verde information is posted on www.sayulitalife.com under the community heading.
No solo abrazes a un árbol, planta uno!
Un nuevo grupo local está haciendo de Sayulita un lugar más verde y mejor para vivir. Sayulita Verde es un pequeño grupo de voluntarios quienes han estado plantando árboles y arbustos en lugares públicos en el pueblo. En un vivero local, las especies nativas de la costa nayarita se están cultivando para ser plantadas, junto con unos árboles que no son del área. El germinado del proyecto (literalmente) ocurrió hace un año, cuando una cantidad semillas fueron plantadas en anticipación a este proyecto. Residente por muchos años Daniel Brewer, quien fundó el grupo con su socia Luisa Viteri, dijo que Sayulita necesita más árboles-para crear "una consciencia verde". "También, me encantan los árboles y ya," dijo Brewer.
Brewer explicó que el objetivo es que crezcan árboles de hoja perenne nativos tales como el majagua, caoba, higuera, sauce, lluvia de oro, y orquidea-todas especias locales; asi como también los árboles de lluvia (ya creciendo por el río), los cuales no son locales pero crecen bien aquí. La meta de Verde es plantar 300 árboles y arbustos esta temporada de lluvias y establecer un programa para su protección y mantenimiento, asegurando una alta tasa de supervivencia.
El 11 de julio, Verde tuvo su primer día oficial de plantar. Catorce árboles fueron plantados y protección instalada en la área al lado del río entre Avenida Revolución (el puente principal) y el mar. Voluntarios también podaron y transplantaron árboles ya en existencia, y limpiarion partes del río y de la calle. En asociación con oficiales locales, el grupo ha identificado varias áreas para el plantar por el río y cerca de la entrada al pueblo. Otros sitios posibles incluyen la escuela primaría y cualquier lugar público que se necesita más verde.
Sayulita Verde da la bienvenida a la participación de las escuelas, los estudiantes y los miembros de la comunidad-el grupo espera inspirar esfuerzos locales de conservación. Luisa Viteri, interesada en que los niños locales participen en plantar, ha contactado oficiales de la escuela primaria.
