It’s warming up in Sayulita and this means we need to stay hydrated. Unfortunately, many people really do not enjoy drinking plain water and this may cause dehydration. An easy fix to this is to incorporate fruits that are mostly water, since your body needs water.  Remember you are made up of approximately 70-80+% water.  Age plays into this. Babies have more water, older people less. So, you can see how hydration can affect the old and the young quite easily, causing enough of a problem that intravenous fluids are necessary. Let’s avoid all that drama and enjoy other Sayulita festivities by upping our fruit intake.

Here’s a few choices:

Watermelon - 91% water, and it’s delicious and available all over Sayulita. Why not begin your day with a few pieces at breakfast to ensure a good day in this climate? Added bonus: Lycopene, a cancer-fighting antioxidant that is plentiful in watermelon.

Spinach - A vegetable, not a fruit, but still not only great for your body due to it’s high levels of potassium, lutein, and vitamin E, but this veggie also is 91% water. Spinach is great tossed into an omelet, in a salad, or sautéed with garlic as a side dish with dinner.

Star fruit - Also weighing in at 91% water, this local favorite is packed full of antioxidants. The heart healthy ones that are also found in green tea, dark chocolate, and wine.

Coco - Of course coconut water fresh from the coconut may very well be your best choice here in Sayulita. Why not get it straight from the source? An actual, fresh coconut. You can find people selling them on the beach in Sayulita almost everywhere. Many restaurants offer them too. They are cold and refreshing, so drink up. After you are done with the water, ask them to cut out the flesh and enjoy that too. At a bargain price of just a 25 pesos, it’s something people pass up, but should not be missed. Sipping cool, fresh coconut water on the beach with friends as you watch the surfers is always a good idea.

Enjoy your stay here in Sayulita as summer approaches. Be safe and drink fluids, or eat plenty of these readily available fruits and vegetables.  Always remember that if you are thirsty, you may already be slightly dehydrated, so get ahead of the game and be proactive!
