NEW ART AND MUSIC CLASSES DEBUT AT
SAYULITA CULTURAL CENTER

Sponsored by Sayulita Investment Realty

July 24, 2006 – Forty-three local children flocked to the Sayulita Cultural Center to participate in the first day of art classes that started on Tuesday, July 19, 2006 and will continue through Thursday, August 17th. Beginning Drawing classes are being held on Tuesdays of each week and Beginning Painting on Thursdays from 10:00 am to noon. The introductory classes are free. Continuing classes will be conducted for a nominal fee to help pay for supplies.

As seen from the results of the first week of classes, students are eager to learn and to visually express their first assignment: to draw and subsequently paint what they love most in the world. The results were eclectic and ranged from scenes of Sayulita life to a Corona truck to turtles and sea life to hearts and mermaids.

In addition to drawing and painting, music classes are being taught on the same Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Cultural Center by Liliana Estrada Terres, owner of the Sayulita libreria (which recently moved from the Centro to Ken’s Studio.) Five children are participating in the music classes and are learning to sing.

A public exhibition of the children’s art and music lessons and a fundraiser to support continuing classes will be scheduled later in the year.

The current classes are being sponsored by Roger Burten and Linda Long-Burten of Sayulita Investment Realty and the State of Jalisco which oversees cultural centers throughout the region.

The art classes are the brainchild of resident Bonnie Metzger, an artist originally from Sausalito, California who has studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute, the Instituto Allende and San Miguel de Allende and the University of California at Berkeley. Metzger has had numerous exhibitions in the San Francisco Bay Area (www.bonniemetzger.com). The classes are being taught in conjunction with the respected local artist, Gloria Navarro whose work has been exhibited and sold in numerous exhibits at the Cultural Center, in Compestella and Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. Assisting in the logistics and translation is Sasha Sokolowski, a part time resident of Sayulita and Sonoma, California who works at the Sayulita library.

“Art is a vehicle for the soul to find light and to express itself publicly,” said Metzger. “By the turnout, and the excellent work the children are creating, it is clear that there is a hunger for activities such as this. It is an honor for us to have the underwriting and space to bring both art and music to the local children.”

Supplies for future classes will be needed. Anyone interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Bonnie Metzger at bonmetz@yahoo.com.
