Can you explain to readers what the “Wellness Fest” event is? The Wellness Fest is a two day health and wellness event here in Sayulita, which will be held at Nirvanna Spa on Friday, May 3rd, 2019, through Saturday, May 4th, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This event is for anyone looking for multidisciplinary treatments of different health related aspects addressed to personal care. Myself (Dr. Barbara Nester) & Nirvanna Spa both aim to provide the best services with the best prices for our entire community of Sayulita, as well as, of course, for our friends who visit each year, or even first-timers. We will also be providing courses, free yoga aid, and various specials on treatments for aesthetic medicine, nutrition, and spa services. For this festival, we are promoting to the community our new menu of facials for all skin types and skin concerns, with our new professional line called “Repechage”. Also, of course the rest of our normal services for wellness will be included, such as our signature massages, body scrubs, body masks, manicures, pedicures, cupping massages, and heat therapy with the "Soqui bed".

MexiTreks in Sayulita offers clients fun jungle hikes, sea kayaking, snorkeling tours, and more, here in both Sayulita and its surrounding areas. However, more than just a tour company, MexiTreks prides themselves on taking the opportunity to educate their guests about our local ecosystems and environmental preservation. Eddie Ochoa, owner of MexiTreks, shares with me his passion for what he and his company get to do here in Sayulita, how he gets to influence others in teaching about environmental awareness, and how he spreads his message for respecting nature through the work his company does in the community.

Have you ever heard the expression “Everything but the kitchen sink”? If not, it’s an expression that implies that you use any and everything you have available in your kitchen (besides the sink, of course) to create a meal. This means anything and everything goes in terms of what ingredients you use! I have heard the expression used before for cookies, but today I wanted to call this column “Everything But The Kitchen Sink Frittata! As long as you have eggs and cheese in your fridge, the sky's the limit as to what you can use to make this very yummy breakfast frittata. It is easy to make in your Sayulita kitchen, and delicious!

I usually consider myself a pretty fit and healthy person; living in Sayulita, it’s easy to have a very active lifestyle since we spend so much of our days outdoors. For example, I can walk everywhere, I take my dog on runs through the jungle quite often, I surf, and I dance. For these reasons, I had convinced myself that I didn’t need to go to a gym to get a good workout, since I had ways to be active. Therefore, it had been a long time since I had stepped foot inside an actual gym, so I was a bit out of my comfort zone when I decided to try the revolution cycle class at SayulitaFit. After taking this class, I realized I was wrong; there are so many added benefits to being a part of a group workout experience that you simply can’t get just from being active on your own. The revolution cycle class is so much fun, and a really fierce workout. The dance style music, the dark room with neon lighting, and the vivacious energy from the instructor, all makes you feel like you are in a nightclub, not in a gym. You forget you’re “working out” until the end when you realize how sore your legs are. This class left me barely able to walk afterwards, but oh, the burn felt so good!

I have been following the ketogenic lifestyle these days for all of my meals, and one of the things I have missed the most is French Fries. I discovered that jicama, available in almost every tienda here in Sayulita, makes the most delicious French Fries! Thus, I am no longer having cravings for a good batch of crispy fries. These jicama fries are really simple to make; I highly recommend that you try them. Serve them with mayo on the side for a tasty dip. Let me know how you like them!

As eclectic and diverse as Sayulita is, and as much as I love tacos, sometimes I find myself really craving flavors that are special and different from the ordinary or typical meals we find in town. Thus, when Zatar restaurant first opened in Sayulita in February of 2018, I was so excited to see a restaurant with a totally different flavor profile and concept than anything else that existed in town. Since then, Zatar has easily become my favorite restaurant in town, and one I enthusiastically recommend to all of my friends. There are so many menu items at Zatar that are my favorite that I actually joke with my friends about how I could pull off eating there every day. Not only is every dish deliciously cooked to perfection with locally sourced, fresh ingredients, but most of the menu items are made from scratch daily, directly in the restaurant. The food is simply a labor of love; this fact combined with the beautiful ambiance and decor of the restaurant makes you and your taste-buds feel as though you are transported to another part of the world when you dine at Zatar. For me, eating at Zatar feels like eating a meal prepared by a beloved family member. I talk with owner Kelly Majid about Zatar’s beginnings, what the menu is like, and how Zatar is unique from other restaurants in Sayulita.

Recently I was shopping at our Friday Mercado here in Sayulita with my son-in-law, who is a great professional chef. We were at the vegetable stand where there are numerous Asian grown veggies, as well as many others. Alex became so excited when he found a bowl of green and red Shishito Peppers. He bought all that they had at the Mercado! Being that I had never even seen or heard of these peppers before, I was very curious to see how he would prepare them. I had all the ingredients he needed to prepare these awesome little peppers. I just loved the result, and they are simple to prepare with only five ingredients!

Sayulita is known for many special things, one of them being the strong culture of creative arts and creative expression that exists in our community. In Sayulita we are lucky to have such a diverse range of skilled musical artists to share their gift with us. Local Sayulita resident Ryan Webb is not only a great husband and soon to be father, but a talented musician and DJ, who also somehow finds time to give back to the community. DJ Webb graces the stage in many of our local venues and bars. Ryan tells me about his DJ’ing, his passion for music, and how this led him to pursue it as a hobby.

Although I constantly see recipes for Chocolate Molten Lava Cakes, I had never made them before. But with my husband’s 70th birthday coming up in just two days, I decided to give them a try! They came out perfectly and taste so yummy that I knew this was a keeper, and a recipe I just had to share with you. All the ingredients are available here in Sayulita, so you have no excuse not to make them! You will be so happy that you did. The batter can be made up to two days in advance, so invite some friends over for an afternoon tea and dessert. This recipe is so easy to make and such a delicious treat!
