Sayulita, along with the rest of Mexico, celebrated Independence Day this past Tuesday, September 16th. This event marks the 198th anniversary when the high priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato called out to the townspeople in 1810 to stand up against the Spanish crown and initiate a war for Mexico's independence. Every year the celebrations begin on the 15th and go through the 16th, which is a national holiday and celebrated to remember the beginning of the struggle for freedom.
Here in Sayulita many tourists from different parts of Mexico and other countries, came to Sayulita to seek rest, relaxation on the beach, and to enjoy the celebrations over the long weekend. On Monday night the plaza was packed with crowds of people kicking off the celebrations while listening and dancing to music played over large speakers.
Traditional Independence Day foods including pozole, tamales and tostadas were served by local cooks at the plaza's gazebo. Tuesday morning, September 16th , the annual parade got started at the Salud Clinic and went through downtown ending up at the plaza. All the students from both the primary and secondary schools participated by marching and drumming in the parade, with the students shouting out proudly; "Viva Mexico!" The festivities continued for several hours in the plaza, as students danced traditional dances and sang the national anthem.

En todo México y aquí en Sayulita, se celebro día de independencia el martes pasado, el 16 de septiembre. Este ano se celebró 198 anos de independencia, recordando cuando el sacerdote Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla del pueblo Dolores, Guanajuato gritaron a todos en el pueblo que resistiera al liderazgo Español e iniciar una guerra para la independencia de México. Cada ano las celebraciones comienzan el 15 y continúan hasta el 16, lo cual es un día festivo nacional y celebrado para recordar la lucha de libertad de México.
Aquí en Sayulita, muchos turistas de diferentes partes de México llegaron a Sayulita en busca de descanso, relajación por la playa y las festividades durante este puente. El lunes 15 de la noche la plaza estaba llena de mucha gente empezando a festejar y escuchando música tocada por las bocinas grandes. La gente local estaban sirviendo comida tradicional para el día de independencia, incluyendo, tamales, pozole y tostadas.
El martes 16 en la mañana hubo el desfile anual que empezó en frente la clínica salud y termino en frente la plaza. Todos los estudiantes de la primaria y de la secundaria participaron en el desfile, con los alumnos gritando orgullosamente; ¡Viva México, Viva!
Las festividades continuaron durante unas horas con bailes tradicionales en la plaza y los estudiantes de las escuelas cantaron el himno nacional.

Another school year has started for Sayulita's 700 public school students. Many good things have happened in the past few months through the good graces of the education committee of the Grupo Pro Sayulita. We have been in contact with the SEP (the Education Department) trying to improve the conditions of our schools.
The most serious problem facing us is the overcrowding at the schools. Our kinder garden has 100 students. According to the authorities a kinder must have at least 1200 meters and ours has only 200! In addition, this kinder was built below the street level so that in the rainy season, it floods. The day the SEP inspectors came, it was under several inches of mud.
Because of the incredible growth in our area, the grammar school has classrooms that have more than 40 students. These classrooms have been divided and for the first time, part of the children will have to attend school in the afternoons. The classrooms designated for this purpose are temporary classrooms with asbestos roofs.
In meeting with the SEP, we were told that the budget for Nayarit's schools is 680 million pesos. Of these the Federal government has given 80. The state is looking for alternate ways to bring funds to the schools and I have found them to be willing to help and support in every way, except money!
We have ignored the needs of our public schools and the results bare this out. Sayulita's schools had one of the poorest performances in the entire state! Perhaps you do not have school age children, or perhaps you are among the fortunate few that can afford a private school education in this area, perhaps you think it is not your problem. Well, let me tell you, if you are a homeowner or own a business in this area, whatever happens in the schools will directly affect you! Unmotivated students become drop outs and what do you think these children are going to do without an education, skills, or job training. Well, I will leave it to your imagination!
I have been overwhelmed at the interest and dedication of the members of the education committee. This year we will be asking for your support. Our planning includes the participation of the parents, teachers, and students as they too have an obligation to improve their schools. On November 20th we will be having a fund raiser. We would love for you to attend and if you can't we would appreciate any donation.

ParaisoFelino is a shelter and adoption center in San Juan de Abajo, Bahia de Banderas, Nayarit (just south of Bucerias). It also offers a boarding service for cats. The owner Janina Erbana nd her mother, Marianne, take care of around 80-90 stray cats, making the stray cats lives easier and more pleasant.
ParaisoFelino, a property that currently consists of a terrace and a storage room with a main building is still in the construction phase.
For now the home of Marianne and Janina is also part of the shelter housing an additional 40 cats. The area under constuction is a center where food and supplies will be stored, vet consultation can take place, also includes a guest room for volunteers and a "get to know the cats" area.
Unfortunately all projects need funding and volunteers. Lacking these two two elements Janina has struggled for 3 years with this project.

3. Born in Sayulita? I was not born in Sayulita, but in the village of Tecoman, Colima and have lived here in Sayulita for 3 years.
3. Nació en Sayulita? Yo no naci en Sayulita, si no en el pueblo de Tecoman, en Colima y he vivido aquí por 3 años ya.
4. Education level: I finished Secondary in Colima and continued my education in both North Carolina and San Diego, California.

5. Family history & information? I met my wife Sandra Avila and immediately we fell in love. We live together here in Sayulita, where she is a teacher at the new school Costa Verde. Together we have two sons. Kevin Avalos Avila, who was born in Tecoman, as well as Jason Efren Avalos Avila.

6. Employment/business history. I worked as a landscaper in Sayulita, before my wife told me that I was a great people person and the people at Don Pedro's felt so also and hired me as waiter.

7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? There are many more opportunities for locals because of the numerous amount of businesses. This also gives the locals a free opportunity to practice English because of the very relaxed atmosphere Sayulita possesses.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? Hay muchas mas oportunidades para la gente local por la gran cantidad de negocios. Esto también le da a los locales, la oportunidad de practicar ingles, por la atmósfera tan relajada que tiene Sayulita.
8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita? I believe that unfortunately, more people are selling items that are considered illegal.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? The more local people apply themselves and focus on the future, I feel this will create more opportunities to own land and property, not to think only in the present, but ten years from now.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Si la gente local se enfoca en el futuro, creo que se crearan mas oportunidades de tener su propia tierra o propiedad, no solo pensar en el presente, si no en los próximos 10 años.
10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? The first state I lived in Colima, happened to be the first place I learned education, saving plant and wildlife. For the people in Sayulita to learn this and pay attention to the beauty of Sayulita, as well as the rest of the world will certainly make a difference.
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? El primer estado en el que viví fue Colima, allí fue donde comencé mi educación, salvar plantas y animales salvajes. Para la gente en Sayulita, necesitan aprender esto, y poner atención a la belleza de Sayulita, así como también al resto del mundo, así se puede hacer una diferencia.
