Hope Animal Network is an online community focused on animal welfare in Sayulita and surrounding areas. It is just one small slice of the larger pie that will help feed, shelter and care for disadvantaged animals in the region.
Currently there is little veterinary care available to most of the Sayulita pets, let alone for the strays or "beach dogs" as they are affectionately known. What is evident to locals and tourists alike is an active breeding population coupled with varying amounts of hunger, untreated injuries and sometimes even grave health conditions.
The good news: there is a continually growing population of locals and ex-pats that have been doing something about this situation. Hope Animal Network helps connect everyone involved (or interested in getting involved) with giving assistance to animals in need. It is a central portal for organizations and individuals to communicate needs and solutions to a larger audience, share ideas and resources, and discuss animal welfare issues.

Hope Animal Network es una comunidad online centrada en el bienestar de los animales en Sayulita y sus alrededores. Es sólo un pequeño trozo de la tarta más grande que ayudará a la alimentación, la vivienda y el cuidado de los animales de desfavorecidos en la región.
Actualmente hay poca atención veterinaria a disposición de la mayoría de los animales de Sayulita, y mucho menos para la strays o "perros de la playa" como se conoce cariñosamente. ¿Cuál es evidente para locales y turistas es una activa población de cría, junto con cantidades diversas de hambre, sin lesiones y, a veces incluso graves condiciones de salud.

This past weekend, Susie and Jerry de Novellis, a couple from Sayulita's sister city Hollister, Colorado, brought back a defibrillator from the USA for the community of Sayulita.
The town of Hollister purchased this life-saving machine and Jerry and Susan, through their business, (a bar) raised money for the re-chargeable batteries that cost $600 U.S. With the help of Sayulita locals, Gina and Lalo Portillo, the defibrillator was donated to local doctors Jose Luis Chavez Quevedo and Yadira Herrera Hernandez, both current Sayulita residents. Both doctors graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Nayarit in 2006 and are now serving the community in their practice at Miramar #16, across from Liberia Sayulita. They are available 24 hours a day. In an emergency you can dial 045 (322) 190 4179 and (322) 157 1619.
En nuestro pueblo este fin de semana cuando Susie and Jerry de Novellis, un pareja de Hollister Colorado, EU, ciudad hermana de nuestra comunidad regresaron a Sayulita trayendo consigo un desfibrilador para el uso de la comunidad.
El pueblo hermano de Sayulita, Hollister, preocupados por el bienestar de la población, durante este verano, adquirieron este aparato medico, y se lo entregaron a Susan y Jerry, quienes trabajaron juntos para recaudar dinero suficiente para comprar las baterías recargables y traer consigo este invaluable aparato que dará servicio a cualquier persona que lo necesite. Esta pareja, por medio de la querida Gina y su esposo Lalo Portillo, donaron este desfibrilador a la pareja formada por los doctores José Luis Chávez Quevedo, originario de la ciudad de Tuxpan, en el norte de Nayarit y la doctora Mónica Yadira Herrera Hernández de Guadalajara, ambos ahora residentes de Sayulita. Estos doctores, graduados de la Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit en 2006, están al servicio de la comunidad en calle Miramar #16, frente a la Librería Sayulita, las 24 horas del día. 3. Born in Sayulita? What year arrived to Sayulita: I was born in Seattle, Wa USA and came to Sayulita for the first time in 1973.

4. Education level: I had a lot of schooling trying to figure out what to do with my life and my last degree was a Masters in Clinical Psychology. I really did not work much in that field either, but it was very helpful in the job I did take after I got that degree.

5. Family history: Leno and Florencia Bridgman brought my parents, Chuck and Vicenta Sparling, to Sayulita in 1972 and they, of course, fell in love with it. They returned in '73 bringing me and one of my three sisters, Presha. I had never seen a more beautiful place in my life and Presha and I worked hard to convince our parents to buy some land Leno had for sale, which they did and built a house on it in 1974. We were all from the Seattle area so Sayulita was the perfect place to spend winter weeks when we could get away. Now, many years later, I am lucky enough to spend 7+ months a year in Sayulita and my 3 sisters and their husbands will be here too in the near future.
5. Historia Familia: Leno y Florencia Bridgman traído mis padres, Vicenta y Chuck Sparling, a Sayultia en 1972 y que, por supuesto, se enamoró de ella. Regresaron en 1973 traerme y uno de mis tres hermanas, Presha. Nunca había visto un lugar más bello en mi vida y Presha y he trabajado duro para convencer a nuestros padres para comprar algunas tierras Leno había a la venta, lo que hizo y construyó una casa sobre él en 1974. Employment/buiness history: I had many jobs over the years including asphalt paving, Montessori teacher and producing a childrend's TV progam where I worked with another Sayulita resident, Mike Beck, who was my first director. At 40 I finally went to work at a job I'd spent my life avoiding; working for my Dad. We worked together for great 5 years before his sudden death from cancer. Those years were great and taught me many things I never would have learned about compromise and love without being at work every day with my Dad for those years. I stayed at that job for 17 years, during which we merged with a Swedish company in 1989 and then with a Mexican company a few years later. All the businesses were sold in 2001, allowing me to retire in Sayulita, finally reaching a goal I had set in 1973!
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: He tenido muchos puestos de trabajo a través de los años incluyendo la pavimentación de asfalto, profesor de Montessori y la producción de un childrend progam de TV donde trabajé con otro residente Sayulita, Mike Beck, que fue mi primer director. En el 40 finalmente se fue a trabajar en un puesto de trabajo que había dedicado mi vida evitando; trabajo para mi papá. Hemos trabajado juntos por el gran 5 años antes de su repentina muerte por cáncer. Esos años fueron grandes y me enseñó muchas cosas que nunca hubiera aprendido acerca de compromiso y de amor sin ser en el trabajo todos los días con mi papá para esos años. Me quedé en ese trabajo durante 17 años, en la que se fusionó con una empresa sueca en 1989 y luego con una empresa mexicana de unos pocos años más tarde. Todas las empresas se vendieron en 2001, que me permitió jubilarse en Sayulita, por último, un objetivo que me había enviado en 1973!
7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita: People can make a living in Sayulita from more than the sea or palm oil now that Sayulita is a major tourist center. And, the kids no longer have to leave town to go to school or find a job.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita: La gente puede ganarse la vida en Sayulita de más de la mar o el aceite de palma ahora que Sayulita es un importante centro turístico. Y, a los niños ya no tienen que abandonar la ciudad para ir a la escuela o encontrar un puesto de trabajo.
8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. Sayulita is no longer the quiet, peaceful town it once was. Crime and drugs can now be a part of daily life here and that is sad.

9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? While I believe that growth is inevitable, I am hopeful that the new zoning changes and a proactive citizenry will continue to keep Sayulita "green" and preserve the town as a wonderful place in which to live, raise children, and vacation.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Aunque creo que el crecimiento es inevitable, Tengo la esperanza de que los nuevos cambios de zonificación y de una ciudadanía activa que lucha para mantener Sayulita "verde" y la ciudad un lugar maravilloso en el que vivir, criar niños y visita.
10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? Support the public Schools! Sayulita is a very successful town but the public schools are not. I believe that all of us, locals and new-comers, need to invest time, money, and our influence with the government to improve the public schools and do it NOW! With excellent schools the children will grow up reading and writing in both Spanish and English, two of the worlds top languages. With excellent schools the children will grow up knowing that computers greatly enhance learning, working and living more fully. With excellent schools, the children will access the world while living in Sayulita. With excellent schools the children of Sayulita can be all they want to be.
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Apoyo a las escuelas públicas! Sayulita es una pueblo con gran éxito, pero las escuelas públicas no lo son. Creo que todos nosotros, la población local y los nuevos llegados, la necesidad de invertir tiempo, dinero, y nuestra influencia con el gobierno para mejorar las escuelas públicas y hacerlo ahora. Con excelentes escuelas a los niños crezcan la lectura y la escritura en español y en Inglés, dos de los mundos principales idiomas. Con excelentes escuelas a los niños crezcan sabiendo que las computadoras aumentará en gran medida el aprendizaje, de trabajo y de vida más plenamente. Con excelentes escuelas, los niños tendrán acceso, mientras que el mundo que viven en Sayulita. Con excelentes escuelas de los hijos de Sayulita puede ser todos quieren ser.
11. Other notes and/or comments. There are a number of ways that people can get involved in helping Sayulita be a better place to live and visit. Volunteering in a cause you care about is one as is the PTA. One I'm involved with and feel is making a difference here is Grupo Pro Saylita. There is both a Spanish and English meeting so that everyone that wants to go, can. Help Sayulita become the best it can be by becoming active in an organization that improves the town, schools or streets and that helps make your voice heard. Marcos Scott handles the Spanish Speaking meetings and I am helping Marcos with the English meeting at a place and time to be decided.
11. Otras notas y/o comentarios: Hay una serie de formas que la gente pueda involucrarse en ayudar a Sayulita ser un lugar mejor para vivir y visitar. Voluntariado en una causa que importa es como uno es el PTA. Una que estoy involucrado con el sentir y está haciendo una diferencia aquí es Grupo Pro Sayulita. Hay un Español e Inglés reunión para que todo el mundo que quiere ir, puede. Ayuda Sayulita convertirse en el mejor puede ser por convertirse en activo en una organización que mejora la pueblo, las escuelas o calles, y que contribuye a hacer oír su voz.
