Our Revolucion Day parade consisting of the village school children and local queen just gets better and better every year. For those who missed it, I have posted a few pictures I snapped on the Sayulita Galleries page.

Last night on her own 60th birthday, Gina Portillo held a special fundraiser dinner at Casa Los Delfines in order to raise funds for both public primary and secondary schools. The semi-formal event was attended by approximately 200 people who enjoyed live music, children from the local primary school performing traditional dances and a mariachi band playing. The buffet-style dinner included authentic Mexican dishes such as chile rellenos, quesadillas and mouth-watering tamales. All food was handmade onsite by mothers of the school children of Damian Carmona School. Guests could also participate in the silent auction held throughout the dinner. Over 60 local businesses donated serices and products for the event. All funds raised are going towards new school supplies, books and general repairs.
Anoche, el 20 de Noviembre, Gina Portillo invito al publico a que asistara una cena especial de recaudación de fondos en la Casa Los Delfines para recaudar dinero para las ambas escuelas publicas, la primaria y la secundaria, también invito a la comunidad a que la acompañara en celebrar su cumpleaños el mismo día. Durante el evento semi-formal hubo música en vivo, alumnas de la primaria bailando bailes tradicionales y una banda de mariachis. La cena estilo buffet incluía platos auténticos Mexicanos como chile rellenos, quesadillas y tamales. Los invitados podían también participar en una subasta silenciosa durante la noche y los fondos de las ventas también eran para las escuelas. Todos los fondos coleccionados serán donados para libros, y suministros para los alumnos y para reparar y arreglar algunas aulas en las escuelas que desde hace un tiempo les hacen falta unas reparaciones.

1. Name of interviewee: Manuela Garcia Chacon, teacher at the Elementary school Damian Carmona and Art teacher at the Secondary school Revolucion Mexicana.
1. Nombre del entrevistado: Manuela García Chacón, maestra de la Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona y maestra de Educación Artística en la Secundaria Revolución Mexicana.
2. Birthdate/age: 55 years old, I was born in Compostela, Nayarit on October 30, 1953.
2. Año de nacimiento/Edad Tengo 55 años de edad, naci en Compostela, Nayarit el 30 de octubre de 1953.
3. Born in Sayulita? I was born in Compostela Nayarit, my father Donasiano Garcia Cruz was from Compostela and my mother Gerarda Garcia Rodriguez was from Jalisco State. I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters, I am the second one.
3. Nació en Sayulita? Yo nací en Compostela, Nayarit, mi padre Donaciano García Cruz era de Compostela y mi madre Gerarda Chacón Rodríguez era del Estado de Jalisco. Tengo 5 hermanos y 2 hermanas, y soy la segunda.
4. Education level: I studied the first grade of Elementary School in a little town called Vizcarra, close to Compostela. I then studied second and third grades in Compostela at the Elementary School Juan Escutia. Afterwards my father took me out of school and refused to let me finish. When I was 20, I lived in Zacualpan with my grandparents so I decided to finish elementary and started to study in a continuation school. At the same time, I was studying to become a secretary so the principal at the Secondary school in Compostela gave me the chance to work as a secretary at the school. I finished secondary school when I was 27 years old with a score of "A", the best in the whole state of Nayarit. The government gave me a scholarship to study at the teachers' school. Due to my old age the teachers' school in Tepic didn't want to take me as student so I decided to go to Durango to study and become a teacher. After 4 years of studying and 3 years of working as a teacher I graduated when I was 31 years old.

Nivel de educación: estudie el primer grado de primaria en un pueblito llamado Vizcarra, cerca de Compostela, después estudie segundo y tercer grado en la escuela Juan Escutia en Compostela, entonces mi padre me saco de la escuela y no me dejo terminarla. Cuando tenia 20 vivía en Zacualpan con mis abuelos, así que decidí terminar la primaria allí, después empecé a estudiar la secundaria en una escuela abierta, al mismo tiempo estudiaba para convertirme en secretaria, así que el director de la secundaria de Compostela me dio la oportunidad de trabajar como secretaria en la escuela, al mismo tiempo tomaba clases de oyente. Termine la secundaria a los 27 años y con un promedio de 9.9, el mejor promedio de todo el estado de Nayarit, así que el gobierno me dio una beca para estudiar en la Escuela Normal. Debido a mi edad la Normal de Tepic no me acepto así que me fui a Durango a estudiar para ser maestra. Después de 4 años de estudiar y 3 de trabajar como maestra, me gradué a los 31.
5. Family history & information? I live with my husband Zenon Cruz Vargas, we don't have kids.
5. Vive con su familia? Cuántos son? Vivo con mi esposo Zenón Cruz Vargas, no tenemos hijos.
6. Employment/business history. When I was studying to become a teacher I was working in a little town called Zapotan, close to Compostela. The municipio/local government was paying me to teach there and after I graduated the president sent me to another little town: Cumbre de Hucicila. I was told I would not be paid for the job so I talked to my principal and he talked to the parents; they decided to pay me privately to teach their kids until the end of the year. I was teaching first grade and my class won the first place in the zone so the SEP gave us the chance to work for the State. I started as a teacher on call and after 2 years I got a job as a titular teacher in a town named Zomatlan del Caimanero in the north of the state. I worked there for just a few months and then I moved to another town in the same area called Teponahuastla for a year before coming to Sayulita in 1989; I have been here working here ever since!
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación: cuando estaba estudiando para ser maestra estaba trabajando en un pequeño pueblo llamado Zapotan, cerca de Compostela. El municipio me estaba pagando para ensenar allí y después de que me gradué el presidente municipal me mando a otro pueblo: Cumbre de Hucicila, entonces el presidente municipal me dijo que ya no podía pagarme, yo hable con mi director y el hablo con los padres de familia, ellos decidieron pagarme por el resto del ciclo escolar para que ensenara a sus hijos. Yo ensenaba primer grado, y mi grupo gano el primer lugar de aprovechamiento en la zona y la SEP me dio la oportunidad de trabajar como maestra cubriendo interinatos, después de 2 años me dieron mi plaza de maestra en un pueblito llamado Zomatlan del Caimanero, en el norte de Nayarit. Trabaje allí por unos meses y luego me fui a otro pueblo llamado Teponahuastla por otro año, entonces me mandaron a Sayulita en 1989, he estado trabajando aquí desde entonces!
7. One positive change you have seen in Sayulita? The schools are getting a lot better now as they grow along with the community. We have more kids and new schools. The Secondary school and the new private school are perfect examples.
7. Algún cambio positivo que haya observado en Sayulita? Las escuelas son mucho mejores ahora, están creciendo. Tenemos más niños y nuevas escuelas como la secundaria y la escuela privada.
8. One negative change you have seen in Sayulita. Ejidatarios are selling their land, their properties and their homes. They won't have anything to sell in athe near future. They are selling their kids legacy in an effort for short term gains without thinking abou the future.
8. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita. Los ejidatarios están vendiendo su tierra, sus propiedades. Pronto no van a tener nada que vender, están vendiendo el patrimonio de sus hijos, nada más quieren dinero, no piensan en el futuro.
9. How do you imagine Sayulita in 10 years? I think if people continue to sell their properties, sooner or later downtown Sayulita will be just for foreigners and not for locals; just like in Peñon del Risco. Nationals are going to live outside town.
9. Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años? Yo creo que si la gente no deja de vender sus propiedades, pronto el centro de Sayulita será solo para extranjeros no para los locales, como paso en Peñón del Risco. Los nacionales van a vivir en las afueras del pueblo.
10. Do you have a recommendation for the people of Sayulita? Love your town, modify your behavior, your vocabulary and your interests. Feel proud to be Mexican. Do not let the laziness lead your life. Work for a better Sayulita.
10. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita? Amen a su pueblo, modifique su conducta, su vocabulario, sus intereses. Siéntanse orgullosos de ser mexicanos, no se dejen llevar por la flojera, trabajen por un mejor Sayulita.
11 Other notes and/or comments (anything you would like to share with our readers): Maestra Manuela as we call her is one of the teachers who have been here the longer. She is a very kind and sweet teacher. She always teaches first or second graders so people who are about 25 years old can say they were taught to read and write by Maestra Manuela. She also teaches folkloric dances to kids in elementary and secondary school as a way to preserve our traditions. Personally and as a public school teacher I think she is the nicest teacher in town. I respect her and admire her effort to make better kids in town.
11. Otras notas y/o comentarios: La maestra Manuela, como la llamamos, es uno de los maestros que han estado aquí por más tiempo. Ella es una maestra muy amable y dulce. Ella siempre ensena primer y segundo grados así que la gente de hasta 25 años pueden decir que fueron ensenados a leer y a escribir por la Maestra Manuela. Ella también ensena baile folclórico a los alumnos de la primaria y la secundaria como una manera de preservar nuestras tradiciones. Personalmente y también como maestra de escuela pública, pienso que ella es la maestra más amable en el pueblo. La respeto y admiro su esfuerzo por hacer mejores niños en este pueblo.
